Biography of Yoon Sang-hyun
South Korean actor and singer Yoon Sang-hyun, who had no initial plans of entering into the acting field but rather aspired to be a singer stepped into the world of glamour at 32 years of age. He became popular for his roles in ‘Queen of Housewives’, ‘My Fair Lady’, ‘Secret Garden’ and ‘I Can Hear Your Voice’. His over decade-long acting career includes films, different variety shows and singing.
Early Life and Education
Yoon Sang-hyun was born on 21 September 1973 in South Korea. As a child, he dreamed of becoming a superhero like Superman. However, his dreams changed with his age from actor and scientist to singer. After his primary school education, he enrolled in the Seoul Institute of the Arts and studied film. Later he entered the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA).
Career
Yoon Sang-hyun began his career in the entertainment industry in 2005 with the South Korean television series ‘Marrying a Millionaire’ with 16 episodes. The series was partially inspired by the 2003 American reality show, ‘Joe Millionaire’. In the same year, he was featured in a Tudou commercial.
In 2006, Sang-hyun appeared in a lead role in the television series, ‘Exhibition of Fireworks’ starring alongside Han Chae-young, Kang Ji-hwan and Park Eun-hye. Also, he appeared in a supporting role in the television series, ‘Comon Single’ starring Wang Yoo-sun, Kim Yoo-mi and Moon Jung-hee in the lead roles. He won the New Star Award at the 2006 SBS Drama Awards.
Sang-hyun made his big-screen debut with the cameo role of a man in the comedy film ‘Sunday Seoul’ in 2006.
After two years, he was cast in the drama, ‘One Mom and Three Dads’ alongside Eugene, Jo Hyun-jae, Jae Hee, and Shin Sung-rok.
His breakthrough role came years after he entered the acting industry with the hit South Korean 20 episodes romantic comedy television series, ‘Queen of Housewives’, in 2009. He played the role of an immature chaebol, Tae-bong, starring alongside Kim Nam-joo and Oh Ji-ho and received awards for his outstanding performance in the series.
In the same year, he was featured in a lead role as Seo Dong-chan in yet another notable South Korean 16-episode romance comedy series ‘My Fair Lady’ along with Yoon Eun-hye, Moon Chae-won and Jung Il-woo. He not only received critical appreciation for his acting in the film but also won awards, including the Popularity Award, Best Actor and Best Couple Award with Yoon Eun-hye at the 2009 KBS Drama Awards.
Sang-hyun took forward his childhood passion for singing while continuing with acting pursuits. He lent his voice in a single for the Woori Card commercial released on 25 August 2009.
With his rising popularity, Sang-hyun started appearing in several commercials, including Pizza, Maxim and Korean Wells, Digital Cable TV along with Kang Ho-dong, Hi Mart Refrigerator TV and Hi Mart Laptop with T-ara and Shin Ramyun Black with Jang Hyuk. He devised a Japanese single, ‘Saigo no Ame’ on 1 April 2010 under Sony Music.
His television career became stronger when it rapidly grew with yet another South hit series, ‘Secret Garden’ with 20 episodes aired from 13 November 2010 to 16 January 2011. In this series, he played the role of Hallyu star Oska starring with actors Ha Ji-won, Hyun Bin and Kim Sa-rang. He contributed more as a singer in this series, including tracks ‘Tears Stains’, ‘Gazing’, ‘Liar’ and ‘Here I Am’.
On 11 February 2011, Sang-hyun released his first Japanese studio album, ‘Precious Days’ under Sony Music. During the same month, he took part in concerts in Tokyo and Osaka.
On 20 October 2011, he played the role of a lawyer, Yeon Hyung-woo in the South Korean romantic comedy television series, ‘Can’t Lose’, starring with actress Choi Ji-woo.
Yoon Sang-hyun landed his first major big-screen role as a voice coach Shin-heung, in the South Korean romantic comedy film, ‘Tone-deaf Clinic’ on 29 November 2012.
He elevated his popularity in the South Korean television series in the role of Cha Gwan-woo in the series, ‘I Can Hear Your Voice’ from 5 June 2013 to 1 August 2013 with 18 episodes.
On 4 December 2014, he was featured in the film, ‘A Dynamite Family’ in which he was featured in the role of Soo-kyo, starring alongside actors Song Sae-byeok, Lee Ah-lee, Chansung and Kim Ji-min.
In 2017, he appeared in a cameo role as Charles Go in the South Korean romantic comedy hit television series, ‘Strong Girl Bong-soon‘ starring Park Bo-young, Park Hyung-sik and Ji Soo.
As of 2023, 2019 South Korean crime comedy film, ‘Girl Cops’, starring Ra Mi-ran and Lee Sung-kyung in the lead role is the latest film of Yoon Sang-hyun. Also, ’18 Again’, starring alongside Kim Ha-neul and Lee Do-hyun in the lead role is the latest South Korean television series of Sang-hyun.
