Biography of Ra Mi-ran
Early Life and Education
Ra Mi-ran was born on 6 March 1975 in Gangwon Province in South Korea. Mi-ran graduated in arts from Seoul Institute of the Arts. Before making her film debut, she spent years acting in theatre.
Career
After spending years acting in theatre, Ra Mi-ran debuted in 2005 with the South Korean neo-noir psychological thriller film, ‘Lady Vengeance’ directed by Park Chan-wook. It is the third and final instalment of the ‘Vengeance Trilogy’.
In 2006, Mi-ran appeared in three films, including a cameo role in the South Korean monster film, ‘The Host’ by Bong Joon-ho, starring Song Kang-ho, Park Hae-il, Bae Doona, Byun Hee-bong and Go Ah-sung in the lead role. She played the role of a housewife in one of the popular South Korean period drama films, ‘Forbidden Quest’.
She was praised for her leading role as a North Korean defector named Ri Jeong-rim in the film, ‘Dance Town’ in 2011, and many called her performance riveting.
Although Mi-ran appeared in more than 40 films, she received public recognition until she starred in the 2012 South Korean romantic comedy film ‘Dancing Queen’. In this film, she played a more role with Uhm Jung-hwa and Hwang Jung-min. Some of her movies in the same year are ‘The Beat Goes On’, ‘Runway Cop’, ‘Two Moons’, ‘Horror Stories’, ‘Traffickers’, and ‘Code Name: Jackal’.
Mi-ran became more prolific in her career after playing a notable role in Lee Joon-ik’s ‘Hope’ in 2013 and the role of a young boy’s mother garnered her Best Supporting Actress at the 34th Blue Dragon Film Awards. After two years, the actress won the Best Supporting Actress award at the 52nd Paeksang Arts Awards for her excellent role in the film, ‘The Himalayas’, in 2015. During the same year, she was noted as a scene stealer in the hit cable drama, ‘Reply 1988’ starring Ryu Jun-yeol, Lee Hye-ri, Go Kyung-pyo, Lee Dong-hwi and Park Bo-gum.
In 2016, Ra Mi-ran’s role as a Buddhist nun, Yoon in the South Korean movie, ‘Seondal: The Man Who Sells the River’ garnered her a lot of critical appreciation. In the same year, she was cast in a South Korean period drama film, ‘The Last Princess’, based on the best-selling novel by Kwon Bi-young.
Mi-ran played several cameo roles in the television series between the years 2016 and 2021, including ‘The Beauty Inside’, ‘Melting Me Softly’, and ‘Bossam: Steal the Fate’.
Her lead role as Jin Young-soon, a single mother who runs a pig farm, and has lived a persistent life to protect her child in the South Korean television series, ‘The Good Bad Mother’.
As of 2023, the South Korean film, ‘Citizen Deok Hee’ and the television series, ‘The Good Bad Mother’ is the latest work of Ra Mi-ran.
