Biography of Song Kang-ho

Song Kang-ho is a popular South Korean actor. Originally, he began his career as a supporting actor in minor roles. He rose to stardom with his breakthrough role in ‘Green Fish’, a crime drama released in 1997. Song made his film debut through the 1996 Korean drama and the directorial debut of Hong Sang-soo titled ‘The Day a Pig Fell into Well’. Song’s national prominence came with ‘No. 3’, a 1997 South Korean gangster comedy movie. Song Kang-ho acted as the character Jo-pil and is directed by Hong Sang-soo.

His other credits over the course of time include, ‘Joint Security Area’, ‘Sympathy for Mr Vengeance’, ‘Memories of Murder’, ‘The Host’, and ‘A Taxi Driver’. Song received widespread acclaim for his performances in the films ‘Snowpiercer’, which was released in 2013, and ‘Parasite’, which was released in 2019. At the 75th Cannes Film Festival, Song Kang-ho won the Best Actor award. He was ranked sixth on ‘The New York Times’ list of the top 25 actors of the twenty-first century in 2020.

Early Life

Song Kang-ho was born on January 17, 1967, in Gimhae, South Korea. He is a graduate of Gimhae High School. His never-ending dream was to be an actor. After failing the entrance exam, Song Kang joined Gyeongsang National University in Busan at the Department of Broadcasting and Entertainment. Career

Song Kang-ho relocated to Seoul, at the age of 23 to pursue his dream of being an actor. In the play ‘Dongseung’ by Yeonwoo Stage, Song finally made his stage debut in 1991. Song persisted in his brief career as a performer and became a reputable actor. Song acknowledged Lee Sang-woo and Kim Seok as his silent teachers who taught him acting.

Song Kang-ho was one of the founding members of the Theater Company Chaimu in 1995.

Song Kang-ho began his acting career in theatre, and made his film debut in 1996 with the film ‘The Day a Pig Fell into the Well’. His performance as Pan-soo in the crime-thriller drama ‘Green Fish’ received positive feedback and appreciation from the audience. The film is directed by Lee Chang-dong and was released in 1997.

Later, Song acted in the action film ‘The Age of Shadows’ and won the ’53rd Baeksang Arts Award’ for his character titled Lee Jung-chool. Song became the first leading actor in Korean cinema to rack up over 100 million admissions over the course of his career.

In 2016, Song was featured in the film ‘A Taxi Driver’, which portrays the real-life story of a German journalist.
