Early Life and Education

Kang Hye-jung was born on 4 January 1982 in Incheon, South Korea. She began to participate in theatres during her middle school days and kept sharpening her skills to prepare herself for a career in the film industry.

In high school, Hye-jung started modelling and was featured in several commercials and magazines. During her school days, she also appeared in music videos. After completing her basic school education, she moved to Seoul and enrolled in the Seoul Institute of Arts where she got professional training in the performing arts and theatre.

Career

Kang Hye-jung began her career in the entertainment industry with a few small roles in sitcoms, including ‘Jump’ and ‘Nonstop 3’ and a short film, ‘Flush’ in 2000.

With her pretty looks and appearance, she received several roles. She accepted every acting opportunity irrespective of small or big roles and proved her prowess in every role.

Hye-jung became noted for featuring in the 2001 South Korean science fiction film, ‘Nabi’. After watching her amazing performance, South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, offered her a key role in the 2003 film, ‘Oldboy’, where her role of Mi-do led her to win the Best Actress Award at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival. Her character in the film falls in love with a stranger and helps him to look out for a man who imprisoned him 15 years ago.

She experienced the year 2005 as the busiest and most successful year of her entire career as she appeared in five coming-after films. In 2005, she starred in the South Korean relationship film, ‘Rules of Dating’ alongside Park Hae-il.

Kang Hye-jung played the role of a specially challenged girl in the 2007 South Korean drama film, ‘Herb’, directed by Heo In-moo. In 2009, she appeared in the 2009 romantic comedy film, ‘Kill Me’, where she played the lead role of a depressed woman, co-starring with Shin Hyun-joon. The role she plays in the film hires an assassin to kill someone after she fails to do so, but the killer falls in love with her.

At the same time, she also appeared on the small screen. Her notable roles in television series, including ‘On Air’, ‘Nonstop3’ and ‘Miss Ripley’.

Hye-jung appeared in her first English film, ‘Wedding Palace’ in 2010. In this film, she played the lead role and it went on to become a critical success and also a moderate commercial success.

In 2012, the actress appeared in the South Korean television series, ‘The Wedding Scheme’  alongside Lee Kyu-han in 16 episodes. In this series, she played the role of a 32-year-old career-oriented, ambitious, selfish, competitive and Independent woman, Gun-hee with no interest in marrying and is the second out of four daughters.

Next year, she played an extended role as herself in the show, ‘The Return of Superman’.

She left her previous management agency in 2013 and joined C-JeS Entertainment. After that, she played a minor role in E J-yong’s mockumentary ‘Behind the Camera’.

In 2014, Hye-jung appeared in the South Korean comedy film drama, ‘How to Steal a Dog’, starring alongside ‘Lee Re’, ‘Lee Ji-won’ and Choi Min-soo. After two years, she was cast in the film, ‘My Wife’.

In 2017, Kang Hye-jung appeared in the role of a psychiatrist in the South Korean science fiction mystery-thriller film, ‘Lucid Dream’ co-starring Go Soo and Sol Kyung-gu. Also, she made her comeback to the television series with the office comedy-drama, ‘Jugglers’ in December 2017. It was premiered worldwide on Netflix.
