Biography of Go Soo

Go Soo is a South Korean model and a lead actor. He was born on 4 October 1978. He is seen in numerous dramas and movies and has won several awards for the excellent portrayal of versatile characters.

Some of his famous works are ‘Piano’ (2001-2002), ‘Green Rose’ (2005), ‘Will It Snow for Christmas?’ (2009-2010), ‘White Night’ (2009), ‘The Front Line’ (2011), and ‘Missing: The Other Side 2’ (2023).

Early Life and Education

He was born as the second son to his parents on 4 October 1978 in the South Chungcheong Province of South Korea. He majored in Cinema at Sangmyaung University.

Career

Go Soo travelled to Seoul in the hope of starting his career as a theater actor. However, he dropped his plan to become a theater actor due to low income. Later, he started to send his profile photograph to entertainment agencies and received a chance as a model in a South Korean soft drink ad. Afterwards, in the music video ‘Last Promise’ that was released in 1998 by the band Position, he was one of the background actors.

He originally debuted in 1999 by first appearing in the sitcoms ‘My Funky Family’ and ‘Jump’, streamed by MBC. Also, he was a part of the KBS2 drama ‘Ad Madness’.

After appearing in dramas like ‘Say It With Your Eyes’, ‘Nonstop’, and ‘Mom and Sister’ in 2000, he made his breakthrough role in the 2001 romance drama ‘Piano’ directed by Oh Jong-rok. By featuring Go Soo, Jae-hyun, Zo In-sung, and Kim Ha-neul in lead roles, the drama disclosed the transformation story of a local thug to a responsible father after marrying a widow with two children. As the drama unwinds, there springs a romantic relationship between the local thug’s biological son, Jae-soo (Go Soo), and his stepdaughter (Kim Ha-neul).

In 2002, he was recognised for playing the role of Lee Tae-seok in the drama ‘Age of Innocence’ alongside Kim Min-hee and Park Jung-chul. In the next year, he played the role of Shin Young-ho in the romance drama ‘My Fair Lady’ (2003).

Go Soo played a lead role in the crime action thriller film ‘Some’ in 2004. It presented him as Kang Seong-ju, a police officer in the drug crime department. The movie tells the story of a young police officer and a traffic reporter who join hands to investigate the corruption within the police department related to drug cases.

‘Some’ marks the silver screen debut work of Go Soo.

In 2005 he appeared in two television series, ‘Green Rose’ and ‘Marrying a Millionaire’. Both the dramas were welcomed by the fans with open hands. In the series ‘Green Rose’, Go Soo was seen opposite Lee Da-hae. The drama was a perfect blend of revenge and romance, where he conquered the audience’s heart as the character Lee Jung-hyun. In the other drama, ‘Marrying a Millionaire’, he was seen as a young delivery man who got the chance to act in a television dating show. In the reality show, his duty is to attract women by pretending to be a rich bachelor.

From 2006 to 2008, Go Soo took a break from his acting career to complete his mandatory military service.

After the military service, he debuted as a theater artist through the stage play ‘The Return of President Eom’ that was played from 23 May to 3 August 2008.

In 2009 he was seen in the mystery movie ‘White Night’ opposite Son Ye-jin. The plot of the movie was inspired by the novel ‘Journey Under the Midnight Sun’ written by the Japanese writer Keigo Higashino. The same year, he played a lead role in the romance drama ‘Will It Snow for Christmas?’.

Go Soo appeared in the 2010 fantasy film ‘Haunters’ alongside Gang Dong-won. It tells the story of superhumans, one possessing supernatural ability and the other who is immune to the former one’s powers. Cho-in (Gang Dong-won) is a superhuman with a mind-controlling ability. When he was a child, he ran away from home when his own mother tried to kill him due to his superhuman power. Thereafter, he started to live alone in hotel rooms, earning money by manipulating others. Putting him in a puzzle, Im Kyu-nam (Go Soo), who is immune to his mind-manipulating ability, enters into his life.

In 2011, he signed in with BH Entertainment. Later, he was seen in the South Korean war movie ‘The Front Line’. Afterwards, in 2012, he played the role of a firefighter in the film ‘Love 911’.

In 2013, Go Soo starred in the exciting political drama ‘Empire of Gold’. It featured Go Soo, Son Hyun-joo, and Lee Yo-won in lead roles. It revolves around the struggle of three individuals, Jang Tae-joo (Go Soo), Choi Seo-yoon (Lee Yo-won), and Choi Min-jae (Son Hyun-joo) to become the all-controlling power in South Korea’s biggest conglomerate group. In the drama, Go Soo appeared as an antihero.

Also, the same year he appeared as Kim Jong-bae in the movie ‘Way Back Home’. He played the role of a family man who becomes the victim of a fake drug case. In the movie, he starred opposite the popular actress Jeon Do-yeon.

In 2014, Go Soo was seen in two short films, ‘Awaiting’ directed by Kang Je-gyu and ‘View of Mount Myohyang’ (also known as Myohyangsangwan). The short film ‘Awaiting’ was included in the omnibus film ‘Beautiful 2014′, which was screened in the ’38th Hong Kong International Film Festival’. It revolves around a married couple who have lived separately for the past six years due to the division of North and South Korea.

Afterwards, Go Soo was seen in the historic film ‘The Royal Tailor’ alongside Park Shin-hye, Han Suk-kyu, Ma Dong-seok, and Yoo Yeon-seok. The film shows the conflict between two tailors in the Joseon period.

In 2016 Go Soo made his comeback to the mini-screen after three years. He starred in the historical drama ‘The Flower in Prison’ (2016) directed by Lee Byung-hoon. It was a 51-episode period drama starring Go Soo, Jin Se-yeon, Kim Mi-sook, and Jung Joon-ho which tells the story of a girl born in prison who later becomes a pivotal character among the common people in the Joseon period. Jin Se-yeon plays the role of Lee Seo-won and Go Soo plays the role of Yun Tae-won. Also, the same year, he starred in the period film ‘The Last Princess’ as Prince Lee Woo.

In 2017, he was seen in a couple of movies like ‘Lucid Dream’, ‘The Tooth and the Nails’, and ‘The Fortress’.

In 2018, he came back to the mini-screen in the medical drama ‘Heart Surgeons’. The 32-episode SBS series revolves around the young man named Park Tae-soo (Go Soo) and a thoracic surgery wing in a hospital.

In 2019, he played a cameo role of a Crown Prince in the period drama ‘Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency’.

In 2020 Go Soo played the lead role in the thrilling drama ‘Money Game’ opposite Shim Eun Kyung. Later in 2022, he starred in the web short film ‘Bystanders’. Also, he was a part of the 2020-2023 drama ‘Missing: The Other Side’.
