Synopsis

Myul Mang is the one who brings destruction. He meets Dong-kyung at a hospital. She was just coming out of the doctor’s cabin after learning that she has cancer and will live only for three months if she does not take any treatment. The illness was just an add-on to Dong-kyung’s current problems. She has been going through a hard time at work and is not financially stable. Also, she was cheated on by her boyfriend, who already has a pregnant wife. Her only family is her younger brother, whom she loves the most.

After a long day, she reaches home, drenched in rain. She thinks that she fell sick due to bottling up her emotions. A desperate Dong-kyung goes to her balcony, drunk, and shouts out loud about her wish to see the world doomed.

Myul Mang, the doom himself, was listening to her wish. He was looking for a person to grant their wish as part of celebrating his birthday. He finds Dong-kyung’s wish interesting, and he discusses the matter with the goddess. (The goddess is portrayed as a sick young girl with low immunity who is admitted to a hospital).

The next day, Myul Mang meets Dong-kyung and tells her that he is pleased to grant her the wish to destroy the world. Dong-kyung feels awkward after realising her heartless desire. To her surprise, he explains to her that he exists to bring destruction upon every living thing. Furthermore, he says he met her to grant her a wish, which she can either deny or accept. However, her denial leads to the death of the person whom she loves the most.

To make sure that she will not run away, Myul Mang ties a red thread around her wrist. The thread will ease her pain, but it needs to be energised in the presence of Myul Mang, or it will lose its powers.

To learn more about Myul Mang and the situation that she is caught up in, she invites him to her house. Myul Mang agrees with a smile, and instead of moving to her house, he joins his house to hers. The cold behaviour of Myul Mang provokes Dong-kyung, and she challenges him that she will soon make him fall in love with her to make him know how it feels. To her least knowledge, Myul Mang already started to have feelings for her.

One day, Dong-kyung asks Myul Mang to love her as her wish. Myul Mang leans down to kiss her, but suddenly vanishes.

Myul Mang goes to see the goddess the next day. She tells him that he will not die even if Dong-kyung loves him back. In reality, Myul Mang is desperately waiting to end his immortal life.

The goddess is the one who created the universe and Myul Mang. Therefore, she tells Myul Mang to stay away from Dong-Kyung. Later, the goddess takes Dong-kyung to her garden and shows her a sapling that has just sprouted. She gives Dong-kyung a gift and tells her that she is going to bring happiness to her life.

In reality, the girl is the goddess of happiness. Before granting a gift, she tests everyone to make them realise the worth of the happiness that they have received in their lives. As she is the one who takes up the troubles, she is always sick. She balances her life cycle by rejuvenating and perishing when the time demands.

To help Myul Mang and Dong-kyung, the goddess appears in front of Dong-kyung at the hospital. She asks for her help to open a fruit juice bottle. In the meantime, she suggests Dong-kyung a way to escape from the heartbreak that awaits them.

With Dong-kyung’s permission, the goddess erases the memories of Myul Mang and Dong-kyung to save them from the heartbreak. Later, she makes them walk through the events that they have already gone through. Dong-kyung meets Myul Mang at the hospital, like in the same way that she met him for the first time. In their further encounters, the duo starts to feel a kind of longing for each other.

Shortly, they regain their lost memory. They realise that Dong-kyung will die soon. She prepares herself to appear for the surgery. In the meantime, she spent most of her time with Myul Mang. However, to save Dong-kyung, Myul Mang decides to perish from the world by taking away her problems.

After his departure from the world, Dong-kyung recovers from her cancer miraculously, and everything starts to fall back to normal. One rainy night, the goddess waits for Dong-kyung at a bus stop. When she sees the goddess, she expresses her gratitude for granting her a long and happy life. Also, she gives her umbrella when she sees the goddess getting ready to leave in the rain.

Myul Mang was waiting for the return of the goddess to her garden. When she returns, he asks her about Dong-kyung. While telling about her whereabouts, the goddess shows Myul Mang a plant pot in which she has planted an unknown seed. Now, it has grown into a beautiful flower-bearing plant. She tells him that he is no more a butterfly in her garden and sent him to earth as a human.

‘Doom at Your Service’ is a wonderful K-drama that discusses themes like love, hope, healing, and more. By telling the love story of a human and a supernatural being, the drama highlights the power of love and its ability to make a person take selfless decisions to save the other.

Furthermore, it talks about the loneliness that a person endures even if he/she is surrounded by their friends and family members. Also, it showcases the hardships that a human has to endure due to each decision that they make in life.
