Synopsis

Gu-won is a 200-year-old demon who resides in the human realm. He uses his powers to influence humans and makes them sign a contract by manipulating their vulnerabilities. In return for the luxurious life, the obligee should give his life to Gu-won when the contract expires. Gu-won keeps a clock for each person who agreed to his contract. When the clock strikes 12, he should take the person’s life. If he fails to perform his duty, he will be punished and have to stand in the middle of hellfire for a very long period.

Gu-won meets Do-hee at a restaurant. She is a very competitive, workaholic lady who runs a successful business. She lost her parents at a very young age, and thereafter, Joo Cheon-sook, the founder and chairwoman of Mirae Group, took care of her. Joo Cheon-sook is fond of Do-hee, and for this reason, Cheon-sook’s son and daughter hate her.

Since Do-hee is a career-oriented woman, she has not been in a relationship since college. She meets Gu-won on the day that Madam Joo arranges a blind date for her. She goes to the wrong restaurant and meets Gu-won, thinking that he is the one.

Later, Do-hee apologises to Gu-won through her secretary for spoiling his plans on that day. Though she never thought of meeting him again, Gu-won shows up in front of her when an assassin targets her for an unknown reason. One night, she gets into the assassin’s car thinking that it is the taxi that she booked, but she sees bloodstains on his neck and manages to escape.

She asks Gu-won for help when she sees him unexpectedly. However, seeing the fight, she hides behind the road fencing. After smashing down the killer, Gu-won finds her behind the fencing and holds her hand to help her come out of it. Meanwhile, the assassin climbs into his car and drives it towards Gu-won and Do-hee with the intention of hitting them.

Gu-won tries to use his powers but surprisingly finds it is not working. Just before getting hit by the car, Do-hee falls into the river down the road, and Gu-won also jumps in to help her. When they are in the water, the cross mark on the wrist of Gu-won, which grants him the powers, transfers to Do-hee’s wrist.

Afterwards, Do-hee finds herself in the hospital bed. Since Gu-won lost his powers, he realises that he should always be around Do-hee to help himself and Do-hee as well. Without his powers, he is a mere human like everyone else.

One day, Do-hee receives a skeptical message from Madam Joo and finds her dead when she rushes to see her. At the funeral ceremony of Madam Joo, Do-hee discovers that it was a planned murder, and the murderer killed her by replacing her medicines with some other tablet. Nonetheless, Madam Joo’s family refuses to file a case to investigate the murder. Do-hee’s mindful intervention brings the attention of the police to the case. However, Madam Joo’s family turns the police against Do-hee, telling them that she is the only person who will benefit from the death of Madam Joo.

In the meantime, the killer investigates about Gu-won and reaches his office. He installs a microphone under his table and steals the book that contains the secrets about demons. By reading the book, the serial killer learns the truth about Gu-won and the vulnerabilities of demons like him.

Whenever the killer gets a new update, he passes the information to Madam Joo’s grandson.

The killer decides to put an end to Gu-won and stabs a knife in his chest as he planned. In the meantime, the police take Do-hee into custody as part of Madam Joo’s murder investigation. In the absence of his power or Do-hee, Gu-won gets badly injured, and it is Mr. Park who saves him from the killer.

Released from police custody, Do-hee rushes to the hospital and finds Gu-won lying on the bed, very weak. She tries to wake him up by placing his palm on the cross mark on her wrist, and shortly, he wakes up.

To protect Gu-won from the unwanted troubles, Do-hee decides to step down from competing for the CEO position of Mirage Group. Later, Gu-won learns that it is for him that Do-hee gave up her position.

On the day that Madam Joo’s son takes up his position as the new CEO, her grandson drives his car into a grocery store with the intention of crushing Do-hee. It was Madam Joo’s son who gave his son the order to kill her.

Before the accident, Gu-won is already informed by the God/Universe about the upcoming test that Do-hee has to face. The god appears as an old lady who lives on the street. She is the one who made Gu-won a demon and gave him powers after his death.

The god warned him that if he needs his powers back, he should kill Do-hee on the coming full moon day, or else his powers would be lost when she dies, since her death on the full moon day is already decided. However, Gu-won responds to God that he will find a way to save Do-hee and gain his powers back at the same time.

The grocery store catches fire when the car crashes into it. Gu-won runs into the burning shop and comes out carrying Do-hee. While he picks her up, the cross mark from her hand transfers back to his wrist.

Afterwards, at Do-hee’s house, Gu-won wakes up, startled by a dream. In his sleep, he gets a glimpse of his memory of his past life.

Past lives of Gu-won and Do-hee

Gu-won was a human who lived in the Joseon period. He was from a reputed family and was filthy rich. One day, he sees a girl practicing sword dance by the side of a river and instantly falls in love with her. He inquires about her with his servant and learns that she is a famous dancer of that place. Gu-won’s frequent visits to meet Do-hee at the riverside paved the way to their friendship, and later, he proposed to her. As a response to his proposal, Do-hee tells him about the consequences that they will encounter. Also, she told him about her friend who was killed for being in a romantic relationship with the king’s son.

Gu-won, who is not ready to give up his love, starts looking for all the possible ways that will help them with this matter. Finally, Gu-won gets a book that tells about Christianity. Together, they start to attend religious classes, hoping that they can live together if they help to popularise the religion. However, the king is not happy about the growth of the religion in their society.

Therefore, he sends his men to capture Do-hee and execute her as a punishment. Gu-won, who was away for his studies, reaches the scene only after her death. An angry Gu-won kills everyone who witnessed the execution of Do-hee and begs God to send him to hell.

Gu-won becomes devastated after the dream and keeps a distance from Do-hee. He meets the woman on the street for advice, but she tells him that his company will only bring sorrow to her.

Gu-won and Do-hee’s investigation of Madam Joo takes them to a priest. The priest insisted on talking to Do-hee alone. From him, she learns that it was Gu-won who took the life of her father. Years ago, Do-hee’s father signed Gu-won’s contract to save her life. Even after knowing the truth, Do-hee decides to stay calm. Nonetheless, Gu-won visits the priest and learns the truth.

He decides to stay away from her life but comes back when Madam Joo’s elder son reappears in Do-hee’s life. This time, Gu-won kills him for saving Do-hee. As a consequence, Gu-won’s body perishes in front of Do-hee’s eyes.

Afterwards, a heartbroken Do-hee goes to the riverside, the place where she got Gu-won’s cross mark. She tries to summon Gu-won, telling him that she is ready to agree to a deal. The God, who has been watching all these events, brings back Gu-won to earth as a gift for his selfless act of sacrificing his life to save Do-hee.

The drama ends by showing the happy life of Gu-won and Do-hee together.
