Biography of Yoo Yeon-seok

Yoo Yeon-seok, popular for his iconic roles in various movies and dramas is a South Korean actor under King Kong Starship. His significant works include the films, ‘Re-encounter’, ‘Architecture 101’, ‘A Werewolf Boy’, ‘Whistle Blower’, ‘Perfect Proposal’ and ‘Mood of the Day’, and television series like ‘Reply 1994’, ‘Warm and Cozy’, ‘Dr. Romantic’, ‘Mr. Sunshine’ and ‘Hospital Playlist’.

Early Life and Education

Yeon-seok was born on 11 April 1984 in Gyeongsang Province, South Korea. Following his brother, he decided to take up acting in his junior year in high school. While taking acting classes, his friend found some physical similarities between him and actor Yoo Ji-tae. Owing to it, she encouraged Yeon-seok to audition for a role in the critically-acclaimed film, ‘Oldboy’ in 2003 and he got selected. He graduated in Film Arts from Sejong University. While at university, he appeared in theatrical productions.


Yeon-seok made his acting debut as the younger counterpart of Yoo Ji-tae in the acclaimed 2003 South Korean neo-noir mystery thriller film ‘Oldboy’. The film, a loose adaptation of the Japanese manga of the same name, was directed and co-written by Park Chan-wook. The film, ‘Oldboy’ won several awards, including the ‘Grand Prix’ at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival and critical appreciation from director Quentin Tarantino, the president of the jury.

Directly after the successful release of the film, ‘Oldboy’, Yeon-seok entered his mandatory military service in the South Korean Air Force. Subsequently, he finished his graduation in Film Arts.

Following a long hiatus from acting, he made a comeback to the film industry in 2008 with the medical drama, ‘General Hospital 2’, by Noh Do-cheol in an appealing supporting role. The drama with 17 episodes aired from 19 November 2008 to 15 January 2009.

Yeon-seok appeared in supporting roles in a couple of television series between 2008 and 2012, like crime horror television drama series, ‘Soul’, and a comedy romance series, ‘Tasty Life’. Moreover, the actor received excellent reviews for his performance in the 2011 South Korean indie film, ‘Re-encounter’ as a sensitive ex-boyfriend searching for his child. Instantly, Yeon-seok became popular in the film industry with the box office hit South Korean romance film, ‘Architecture 101’ by Lee Yong-ju and a fantasy romance film, ‘A Werewolf Boy’.

His outstanding performance in the comedy film, ‘Born to Sing’ in 2013, based on a national singing contest enhanced his profile. In the same year, he played a role in a television series, ‘Gu Family Book’ by Shin Woo-chul and Kim Jung-hyun. Late 2013 was a breakout year for Yeon-seok when it came to his career. He gained popularity after playing the lead role in a South Korean television series, ‘Reply 1994’.

He was cast in the nostalgic campus drama along with co-stars Jun-woo, Kim Sung-kyun, Baro, Min Do-hee, Lee Il-hwa, Go-ara, Son Ho-jun and Sung Dong-il and Yeon-seok appeared in dominant roles in two films in 2014, Yim Soon-rye’s South Korean film, ‘Whistle Blower’, based on real-life scientist Hwang Woo-suk, co-starring Park Hae-il and Lee Geung-young, and South Korean period film, ‘The Royal Tailor’ by Lee Won-suk. The same year, he also tried his stint in season two of a South Korean travel reality show, ‘Youth Over Flowers’.

Yeon-seok was the lead cast in the romantic television series, ‘Warm and Cozy’ with actor Kang So-ra in 2015 as a chef and restaurant owner, Baek Gun-woo. The actor was the lead in the romantic thriller film, ‘Perfect Proposal’, written and directed by Yoon Jae-gu. He also acted in the South Korean romantic comedy film, ‘The Beauty Inside’, based on the 2012 American social film of the same name.

Yeon-seok’s first stage musical was later in 2015 with a musical fantasy, ‘Armour’, adapted from the 1943 short story, ‘Le Passe-Muraille’ by Marcel Ayme.

In 2016, Yeon-seok starred in the South Korean period drama film, ‘Love, Lies’ by Park Heung-sik. The film was a reunion of the artists in the film, ‘The Beauty Inside’, Chun Woo-hee, Han Hyo-joo and Yeon-seok. His acting career was followed by his role in the romantic comedy film, ‘Mood of the Day’, starring alongside actor Moon Chae-won.

After doing a handful of popular films, Yeon-seok returned to the television series in 2016 with the first season of the hit drama, ‘Dr. Romantic’, starring actor Han Suk-kyu as the title character with Seo Hyun-jin.

In 2018, Yeon-seok starred in a South Korean series, ‘Mr. Sunshine’ with Lee Byung-hun, Kim Tae-ri, Kim Min-jung and Byun Yo-han, directed by Lee Eung-bok.

 A fan meeting titled ‘All About YOO’ was held as part of  Yeon-seok’s 15th debut anniversary celebration in 2018. At the end of the year, he appeared in the musical, ‘A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder’, which was based on the 1907 novel, ‘Israel Rank: The Autobiography’ of a Criminal by Roy Horniman.

Yeon-seok appeared in a critically acclaimed hit medical drama, ‘Hospital Playlist’ directed by Shin Won-ho in 2020.

In 2022, Yeon-seok was cast as detective Park Jin-ho in the crime-mystery film, ‘Vanishing’ by French film director Denis Dercourt. At the end of the year, he starred in the drama, ‘The Interest of Love’ as a bank employee. The film was based on a novel written by Lee Hyuk-jin of the same Korean title. Recently, he held a fan meeting called ‘Yoo Yeon-seok’s Understanding’ related to his 20th debut anniversary on 8 April 2023 at Ewha Womans University Samsung Hall.

Yeon-seok has not limited himself to films only. He invested his talents in series and live shows as well. Yeon-seok received some notable awards for his excellent work.

  • Won the ‘Excellent Actor Award’ at the ‘2016 SBS Drama Awards’ on 31 December 2016 for the drama, ‘Dr. Romantic’.
  • Won the ‘Best Couple Award’ with actor Seo Hyun-jin in the drama, ‘Dr. Romantic’ at the ‘2016 SBS Drama Awards’ on 31 December 2016.
  • Won the ‘Ten Star Award’ on 30 December 2015 for the drama, ‘Warm and Cozy’ at the ‘2015 MBC Drama Awards’.

Military Life

Yeon-seok entered the South Korean Air Force for his mandatory military service in 2003, shortly after his debut in the film ‘Oldboy’. Though, the enlistment period for the air force is three months longer than that of the regular armed forces, Yeon-seok opted for it, as his girlfriend’s house was near the air force base. Yoo Yeon-seok found it as a chance to meet her often.

Personal Life

Based on reports, Yeon-seok has no wife or girlfriend presently. Additionally, he stated that he has no plans to get married or to be in a relationship.
