Synopsis

Nam Ha-neul joins Yeo Jeong-woo’s high school as a transfer student from Busan. She is known for her excellent academic reports. As the ambitious daughter of her single mother, she makes use of every second of her life to study. She takes only seven minutes to eat her meals and run instead of walking to invest more time in reading. She has built a strong will to study even in the midst of chaos.

Before Ha-neul’s transfer, Yeo Jeong-woo was the top student in the school. Unlike Ha-neul, he has two friends who always pamper him, and he likes spending time with them. He thought he would remain the top student in the school no matter how hard Ha-neul tried to beat him.

However, Ha-neul comes first in the midterm exam, pushing Yeo Jeong-woo to the second position. It makes Yeo Jeong-woo take things seriously. A war begins when they start to compete for first place in everything they do.

After high school, they both join medical school. Ha-neul becomes an anesthesiologist, and Yeo Jeong-woo becomes a plastic surgeon. Living their personal lives, the duo has never thought of seeing each other in their lives again.

However, fate had other plans for them.

Yeo Jeong-woo’s fame as a plastic surgeon spreads worldwide through various social media platforms. For his talent, he receives prestigious awards, for which his colleagues are secretly jealous. However, his life turns upside down when one of his rich client dies due to excessive bleeding during the surgery. The discovery of the empty bottle of heparin from the operation theater makes it hard to prove his innocence in court.

Ha-neul, on the other hand, leads a depressed life. She takes long shifts on duty and rarely takes care of herself. The thought of death that came to her mind on the day she fainted on the road made her visit a psychiatrist. The doctor declares that she is depressed and prescribes some medicines.

Ha-neul could not accept the new revelation about her mental health. Therefore, she heads to her home after throwing away her medicines and unexpectedly meets Yeo Jeong-woo on her rooftop. Yeo Jeong-woo has moved to the room in Ha-neul’s house upstairs, taking a break from his busy life after the medical accident.

One day Yeo Jeong-woo accidentally overhears the conversation between Ha-neul and her mother and learns that she is going through depression. He decides to stay by her side and asks her to spend some time with him, intending to ease her pain. They go to a Korean restaurant. While sharing a few drinks, he discloses to her that he overheard the conversation with her mother. She tells him her sorrows and worries. However, the next day they feel embarrassed about crying and hugging each other last night. Later, a kind of understanding and love buds between them.

On the trial day of Yeo Jeong-woo’s case, Ha-neul appears in court with the proof to save him. Though the court announces him as innocent, Yeo Jeong-woo’s is affected by post-traumatic stress disorder. To help him get out of his condition, she takes him to her psychiatrist.

The drama ends by showing Yeo Jeong-woo and Ha-neul regaining their happy lives by enduring the harsh phase of their lives bravely.

‘Doctor Slump’ is a refreshing watch with lots of funny, romantic, and cute elements. It discusses love, healing, and the hectic working atmospheres by giving the lives of Nam Ha-neul and Yeo Jeong-woo as examples. Through the slow-burn cute romance of the duo, the drama takes the viewers to their dark sides, where they endure severe mental pain.

Nam Ha-neul’s struggles to meet the expectations of her family and society make her depressed. By the time she meets Yeo Jeong-woo for the second time in her life, her mind has already decided to die instead of tolerating the humiliation that she faces from her senior. Yeo Jeong-woo’s accidental intrusion into her life gives her new hope to live.

Things were not different for Yeo Jeong-woo after meeting Ha-neul for the second time. He feels comfort in sticking by her side during the worst period in her life.
