Overview of Vertigo

Synopsis
Seo Young is a woman in her 30s who tries to find peace and happiness in her busy life. She works as a contract worker in the same company where her boyfriend, Jin Soo also works. Living alone in a city, with an always complaining mother in her hometown, Jin Soo is her only happiness. Nonetheless, they keep their relationship a secret from others.
She is not able to run away from the haunting complaints of her mother and the thought of her own unstable life. It makes her a patient with vertigo.
One day while working, she feels dizzy and goes to see a doctor. Adding uneasiness to her current health condition, she learns that Jin Soo is leaving for Japan soon for a business trip. Initially, she is not much worried about his departure. However, she starts to feel anxious as his departure day nears. After a few days, she again feels dizzy and goes to the refreshment area in the office. While looking outside through the glass of the tall building Kwon Woo appears in front of her.
Kwon Woo is a glass cleaning employee living with his old father and his pet dog. Occasionally, he starts appearing in front of her due to his contract agreement to clean the building’s glasses. Kwon Woo becomes curious about Seo Young and starts to keep an eye on her.
On behalf of Jin Soo’s departure, the colleagues in the office host a party. When everyone leaves, Seo Young calls Jin Soo and asks him to spend a couple of hours with her. However, he refuses to join her and tells her that he has other plans. A depressed Seo Young goes to a bar. Kwon Woo, who was also present in the partying house with his friends follows her and overhears her conversation with Jin Soo. In the bar, he sits away from her and saves her from a man without drawing her attention to his presence.
As days pass, her illness gets worse and her doctor gives her a hearing aid when she says she hears a ringing in her ears. Since her contract renewal is near, her friend suggests her not to wear it. Also, her boss does not give her hope to continue her work in the company.
The next day, Seo Young finds Jin Soo in his cabin and on the same day he resigns from the company when his boss scolds him. Seo Young hurries to meet Jin Soo but overhears the conversation of the male staff secretly talking about Jin Soo making love with a man which was caught on the CCTV camera. The news breaks her heart. She breaks up with him and decides to move on with her life.
One day when she is alone in the office refreshment area, her boss approaches her and tells her about about what he saw in the CCTV footage. He threatens her and tries to abuse her. Kwon Woo who is cleaning the glass becomes furious watching Seo Young getting insulted. He starts to bang on the glass and seeing him furious, the boss leaves the room.
Seo Young goes to see Kwon Woo and asks him to take her down in the rope. He does as she says and they watch a beautiful sunset. With him, she feels no fear of heights. With the intention of committing suicide, she unlocks the safety clip attached to her body and jumps. However, Kwon Woo catches her from falling down.
Theme
‘Vertigo’ is a movie completely focused on the struggles and healing of a woman in her 30s. Seo Young dreams of living a happy life with her life partner. She wants to live a life without complaints. By narrating her story, the movie takes its audience through an emotional rollercoaster. It is extremely slow-paced giving time for the viewers to understand the internal thoughts and the pain of the heroine.
The movie begins by portraying the insecurities and problems of Seo Young. However, as it progresses, the viewers can witness her healing from her mental stress. The random boy, who appears in her life later becomes her reason to live the rest of her life. His intrusion into her life changes her life like a miracle.
