Career and Achievements

V was a ‘secret member’ of BTS prior to his debut. Even though his agency wanted to keep his identity a secret, fans were unaware of his existence. He claimed that the idea had made him feel uneasy and lonely because he believed he might be dropped from the lineup. He debuted with BTS on Mnet’s M Countdown on June 13, 2013, performing the song ‘No More Dream’ from their debut single album, 2 Cool 4 Skool.

He received his first music composition credit as a co-writer and producer of the song ‘Hold Me Tight’ in The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1. Along with bandmate Suga, he contributed to the lyrics of the song ‘Fun Boyz’. His melody and Jungkook’s original lyrics were combined with the song ‘Run’ from the album The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2. He contributed as a songwriter and composer to the BTS studio album Wings’ solo song ‘Stigma’ (2016).

Together with bandmate J-Hope, he also unofficially released covers of Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’ and ‘Hug Me’. In May 2018, a trailer for BTS’ then-upcoming third studio album, Love Yourself: Tear, featuring his second solo song, ‘Singularity’, was made available. On October 25, BBC Radio played the song for the first time in the UK. The Guardian added ‘Singularity’ to its “Top 50 songs for the month of June 2018” playlist a month after it was released, and Billboard ranked it number 28 on their critics’ list of the “Top 50 BTS songs”.

Overall, ‘Singularity’ received positive reviews from critics and was included on a number of year-end critic’s lists. He was one of the youngest recipients of the fifth-class Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit medal, which the President of South Korea presented to him and the other BTS members in recognition of their contributions to the spread of culture. For the soundtrack album of their mobile game BTS World, he and bandmate J-Hope worked with Swedish singer Zara Larsson on the song ‘A Brand New Day’.

On the World Digital Song Sales chart, it debuted at the top on June 14, 2019, after its release. Eight months later, on BTS’ studio album Map of the Soul: 7, he worked with bandmate Jimin on the song ‘Friends’ and assisted in writing his solo song ‘Inner Child’. In July 2021, South Korean President Moon Jae-in appointed him and the other BTS members to the position of Special Presidential Envoy for Future Generations and Culture in order to “expand South Korea’s diplomatic efforts and global standing” in the international arena and “lead the global agenda for future generations”.

He also co-wrote the song ‘It’s Definitely You’ for the soundtrack to the show with his bandmate Jin. On June 8, 2017, he released ‘4 O’Clock,’ a song he co-produced with bandmate RM, in honour of BTS’ fourth anniversary.

On January 30, 2019, he made his debut independent song, ‘Scenery’, available via the BTS SoundCloud page. The ballad’s lyrics and music were created by Kim Taeh-yung, and he photographed the cover art. Docskim, Big Hit producer, worked with Pdogg and Hiss Noise to further the song’s composition. A new record on the platform was set when it went from 20 million to 100 million streams in more than fourteen days.

‘Scenery’ broke the daily streaming record nine times in the two weeks after its release. Kim Taeh-yung released ‘Winter Bear’, his second solo song and first to be entirely in English, via SoundCloud, along with a self-directed music video on BTS’ YouTube channel. He contributed ‘Sweet Night’, an independent pop song, to the soundtrack of the JTBC drama Itaewon Class in 2020, which was released on March 13.

It was self-written and produced, and it debuted at number two on Billboard’s US Digital Songs chart. It received generally positive reviews for its composition, vocal performance, and warm lyrics. He released ‘Snow Flower,’ a holiday song with Peakboy, on December 25. He contributed to the original soundtrack for the Studio N drama Our Beloved Summer. The song, ‘Christmas Tree,’ was debuted at position 79 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Kim Taeh-yung his first solo entry.

Artistry

He has a baritone singing voice that has generally been well-received by critics, who especially praise his vocal range and “husky” tone. He was praised for his falsettos, which displayed his vocal range and distinctive musicality, during the performance of his solo song ‘Stigma,’ which helped him gain more vocal recognition. Blanca Méndez, a music critic, referred to his “Singularity” tone as a significant “tone setter” on BTS’ Love Yourself: Tear (2018) album. The same was said by Vice’s Katie Goh, who called it “one of his best vocal performances”. His appreciation of jazz and classical music has a big impact on his musicality. His influences include Ruben Studdard and Eric Benet.

He is renowned for his “duality” as a performer, or his capacity to elicit a range of emotions from an audience. During BTS’ fan meeting in November 2016, he came up with the phrase “I purple you”. Since then, purple has come to represent BTS and their followers. In their anti-bullying campaign with BTS, UNICEF used this phrase. The K-pop industry was the subject of analytical research on Google search trends in 2018 by Eugene Investment & Securities Co., Ltd.

The top search term over the previous five years in South Korea was “V”, which came in first place on the list. He who placed ninth in a Gallup Korea survey from last year, was chosen as the fourth most popular idol of 2019. He has been cited as an inspiration and role model by numerous artists.
