Biography of Jimin

South Korean singer and dancer Park Ji-min, born on 13 October 1995, is known worldwide by his stage name, Jimin. He debuted in 2013 as a member of the South Korean boy band BTS, which was signed by the Big Hit Entertainment record company. With BTS, he has released three solo songs: ‘Lie’ in 2016, ‘Serendipity’ in 2017, and ‘Filter’ in 2020. All of these songs have achieved success on the Gaon Digital Chart in South Korea. He co-wrote and co-composed the digital music ‘Promise’, which served as his first independent song and was published in 2018. He sang the song ‘Alongside You’ with Ha Sung-woon on the soundtrack for the 2022 TvN drama Our Blues.

Early Life and Education

He was born in Geumjeong District, Busan, South Korea on 13 October 1995. He attended Hodong Elementary School and Yonsan Middle School for academic education. Besides he attended Busan High School of Arts and Just Dance Academy to learn dance. In 2014 he graduated from Korean Arts High School, in 2020 he took his major from Global Cyber University in Broadcasting and Entertainment and enrolled in Hanyang Cyber University to pursue a Master of Business Administration in Advertising and Media in 2021.

Career

Jimin made his singing and dancing debut with the band BTS on June 13, 2013. He released three solo tracks under the group’s name: ‘Lie,’ ‘Serendipity,’ and ‘Filter.’ The song ‘Lie’ was made available in 2016 as a part of Wings, the group’s second Korean studio album. It was called magnificent and intense, expressing melancholy undertones and feelings consistent with the album’s overall idea. The group’s Love Yourself: Her (2017) extended play (EP) featured the delicate and sensuous song ‘Serendipity,’ which untangled the joy, conviction, and curiosities of love.

The song ‘Filter,’ which is from the group’s 2020 studio album Map of the Soul: 7, is considerably different from the group’s earlier songs. It has a Latin pop flare and has lyrics that discuss the several faces of Jimin that he displays to the outside world and to those close to him.

The Spotify streams for ‘Serendipity’ and ‘Lie’ both reached fifty million in 2018, with the full-length version of the first song from BTS’ compilation album Love Yourself: Answer (2018) surpassing the milestone in early 2019. Psy, who had previously exceeded the 50 million stream threshold twice with ‘Gangnam Style’ (2012) and ‘Gentleman,'(2013), was surpassed by Jimin, who became the first Korean artist to have three solo singles gather more than 50 million streams.

In addition, both tracks, which peaked at numbers 17 and 19, respectively, on the Official Chart Company’s list of the top 20 BTS singles in the United Kingdom as of October 2018, were the only solo endeavours by a member of BTS. The top two solo songs included that year, at numbers 18 and 20, respectively, were on both tracks when the list was expanded to include the top 40 in April 2019.

When ‘Serendipity’ hit the milestone in May 2019, Jimin became the first member of BTS to have a solo music video receive 100 million views on YouTube. The Official Chart Company’s top 40 list was updated in January 2020, and he was still the only member of BTS with multiple solo songs.

‘Lie’ and ‘Serendipity’ were the second and third most-streamed solos, coming in at 24 and 29, respectively, with the full-length version of the latter at 38. With over 2.2 million streams in its first 24 hours of release in February, ‘Filter’ broke the record for the biggest streaming debut among all Korean songs on Spotify. It later became the fastest Korean solo to surpass 20-60 million streams in the platform’s history.

Along with the other members of BTS, Jimin received the fifth-class Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit in 2018 from South Korean President Moon Jae-in, in recognition of their contributions to the advancement of Korean culture. In conjunction with the other BTS members, he was appointed by President Moon as Special Presidential Envoy for Future Generations and Culture in July 2021 to ‘lead the global agenda for future generations’ and ‘expand South Korea’s diplomatic efforts and global standing’ in the international arena.

Solo Career

In 2014, Jimin and bandmate Jungkook worked together on the song ‘Christmas Day,’ a Korean cover of Justin Bieber’s ‘Mistletoe.’ Jimin was the author of the Korean lyrics. They worked together once more in 2017 on a cover of Charlie Puth’s ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’ (2016), which featured Selena Gomez. The duet was prepared as a special gift for the band’s fanbase and released on June 2 as part of BTS’ fourth-anniversary celebrations.

Jungkook had previously released a solo version of the song in February of that year. According to Teen Vogue, Jimin’s voice ‘makes the rendition all the more lovely’ when it is added to the mix. The duet rendition was praised by Canadian publication Flare magazine, which claimed that ‘it honestly might be better than the original.’ The cover was ‘nothing short of flawless,’ according to Elite Daily.

In 2016, Jimin made several appearances on a variety of programmes like God’s Workplace, Please Take Care of My Refrigerator, and Hello Counselor. On domestic television, music shows like Show! Music Core and M Countdown. He also worked as a special MC. He performed a dance duet with Taemin from ShINee at the KBS Song Festival in December 2016.

His first solo song outside of BTS, ‘Promise,’ was made available on BTS’ SoundCloud page for free on 30 December 2018. The platform declared on 3 January 2019, that ‘Promise’ had broken Drake’s ‘Duppy Freestyle record for the biggest 24-hour debut in history. The song, which Billboard referred to as a ‘mellow pop ballad,’ was written by Jimin and Big Hit producer Slow Rabbit, who also produced the track. RM and he wrote the lyrics.

On 24 December 2020, he dropped his second solo track, ‘Christmas Love,’ which was inspired by his early memories of the season. For the TvN drama Our Blues, he took part in the first television soundtrack of his career in 2022.

The single, titled ‘With You,’ was released on 24 April and features Ha Sung-woon. He will be a featured artist on Taeyang’s upcoming 13 January single ‘Vibe,’ which features him. Since BTS announced in June 2022 that it would shift its focus to individual musical endeavours, the song will be his first legitimate solo project.
