Biography of J-Hope

J-Hope, whose real name is Jung Ho-seok, is a South Korean musician, rapper, record producer, dancer and songwriter known for being a member of the popular boy band ‘Bangtan Boys’ or ‘BTS’. He has released multiple albums and singles with the band and as a solo artist. He has also made appearances on various variety shows and has received several awards and accolades.

Early Life and Education

Jung Ho-seok, better known by his stage name J-Hope, was born on February 18, 1994, in Gwangju, South Korea, where he also shared a home with his parents and older sister, Jung Ji-woo.

He signed up for Hanyang Cyber University’s Master of Business Administration in Advertising and Media programme in March 2019. He earlier received a degree in Broadcasting and Entertainment from Global Cyber University.

Career and Achievements

Before becoming a member of BTS, J-Hope had a background in dance and was part of a street dance team called ‘Neuron’. He also took dance classes for six years at Gwangju Music Academy. His dance skills earned him recognition and awards, including first place in a national dance competition in 2008. This interest in dance eventually led to his interest in singing, and he auditioned to become a trainee with Big Hit Entertainment. During his time as a trainee, he was featured as a rapper on the song ‘Animals’ by singer Jo Kwon in 2012.

J-Hope officially debuted as a member of the group BTS on ‘M Countdown’ on 13 June 2013. He was the third member of the group to join as a trainee, after RM and Suga. On 14 June 2019, he collaborated with fellow BTS members V, and Zara Larsson to release a song called ‘A Brand New Day’ for the mobile game BTS World.

On 1 March 2018, J-Hope made his debut solo mixtape, ‘Hope World’, available globally. A music video for the lead track, ‘Daydream,’ was released alongside it. On 6 March a music video for the B-side single ‘Airplane’ was also made publicly available.

He was the highest-charting Korean solo performer on the list at the time due to the mixtape, which debuted at number 63 and peaked at number 38 on the ‘Billboard 200’. He became one of only 10 Korean artists, including BTS, to achieve number one when ‘Daydream’, the album’s lead single, peaked at number one on the ‘World Digital Song Sales chart’.

Moreover, J-Hope ranking on the ‘Emerging Artists chart’ and the ‘Artist 100’ increased to number three and 97 respectively. Subsequently, he reached a peak of number 91 on the ‘Artist 100’. He was the fifth Korean artist and the second Korean soloist to chart on the ‘Artist 100’. Thereby, his solo mixtape gained international recognition and charted in ten countries worldwide. Additionally, the lead single ‘Daydream’ itself was charted in three countries.

In 2018, the mixtape was ranked number five on ‘Billboard’s year-end World Albums Chart’. In commemoration of the third anniversary of ‘Hope World,’ he released the full version of the closing track ‘Blue Side (Outro)’ and made it available for free on the ‘BTS Soundcloud’ page on 1 March 2021.

On 27 September 2019, J-Hope and American artist Becky G collaborated on the track ‘Chicken Noodle Soup’. The track was a hit and became his second song to debut at number one on the World Digital Song Sales chart.

On 15 July 2022, he released his debut solo album, ‘Jack in the Box’, after his agency ‘Hybe’ announced him as the first member of ‘BTS’ to begin solo promotions. The album was preceded by the lead single, ‘More’, which was released on 1 July 2022.

Later, J-Hope made his solo performance debut as the headlining act for the final day of the ‘Lollapalooza festival’, becoming the first South Korean artist to headline a main stage at a major U.S. music festival.

In September 2022, he was featured on the single ‘Rush Hour’ by Crush. He was nominated for six awards, including ‘Artist of the Year’ and ‘Song of the Year’, at the ‘MAMA Awards’ and performed as the headliner on the second day of the event. He also gave his solo performance at ‘Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve’ on 31 December 2022.

At the beginning of February 2023, Weverse and Disney+ will make ‘J-Hope in the Box’, a documentary about the making of his debut album and his performance at ‘Lollapalooza’, available for streaming globally.

Military Life

J-Hope’s band, BTS, is currently on a break to finish their mandatory military service. He is expected to enlist in the military in February 2024, and the band will return in 2025 once all 7 members have served their terms.
