Early Life and Education
Tzu-yu was born on 14 June 1999, in Tainan’s East District. Her family consists of her parents, a self-made business couple and an older brother. She began dancing at a young age and received training at a dance academy.
Talent scouts spotted Tzuyu in 2012 at the MUSE Performing Arts Workshop in Tainan and she moved to South Korea to start her training in November of that same year. She completed her middle school education by passing a test at Tainan Municipal Fusing Junior High School in 2016.
Along with her bandmate Chaeyoung, she graduated from high school at Hanlim Multi Art School in South Korea in February 2019. Tzu-yu appeared in the South Korean reality television show Sixteen in 2015, which was created by JYP Entertainment and co-produced by Mnet. She went on to join the newly formed girl group TWICE as one of nine successful participants. Tzu-yu, unlike the other Sixteen winners, was chosen through audience voting. Her beauty has succeeded in getting her positive attention.
Career
Meanwhile, Tzuyu’s agency, JYP Entertainment, released a video of her reading an apology that said, in part:
“There is only one China, on both sides of the strait, and I have always been proud to be Chinese. I sincerely apologize to my company and to my Internet friends on both sides of the strait for the pain I have caused, and I am also deeply guilty.”
Tzu-yu’s apology stirred controversy among Taiwanese voters on election day. The incident drew international attention because it was thought to have influenced Taiwan’s general election in 2016. According to a survey, her video apology influenced the choices of approximately 1.34 million young voters. In retaliation for the criticism, JYP Entertainment publicly stated that they would implement new procedures for exports and overseas operations in order to safeguard its employees from future scandals. This included training in cultural sensitivity for its artists and staff members. In a question and answer session with The Korea Times, a JYP representative stated that the training would cover issues such as international political conflicts.
