Early Life & Education
She was born on April 23, 1999, in Dunchon-dong, Seoul, South Korea. Her family consists of her parents and a younger brother named Son Jeong-hoon. In 2019 she completed her secondary education at Hanlim Multi Art School alongside Tzuyu, her bandmate in TWICE.
She had been interested in the performing arts since she was a child and had modelled for children’s magazines. Before she joined ‘JYP Entertainment’, she had already determined she wanted to be a singer and had been training in dance for over a year.
Career & Achievements
At the age of 14, she applied to be a trainee at JYP Entertainment and was selected after two rounds of auditions. She started out as a vocalist, but soon after, she began learning rap.
She participated in the reality television series ‘Sixteen’ in 2015. As one of the nine winners, she then joined the brand-new female band ‘TWICE’. On October 20, 2015, ‘TWICE’ released their first extended play, ‘The Story Begins,’ marking their formal debut. Along with other members Dahyun and Momo, she is well known for being one of TWICE’s rappers in addition to singing for the group. When she wrote the rap verse for Twice’s cover of ‘Precious Love’ by J. Y. Park for their 2016 album ‘Page Two’, she became the first member to be given writing credit.
Since then, she has written lyrics for a number of TWICE songs. Later, she covered Cheeze’s ‘Alone’ as a solo project. She was the first member of ‘TWICE’ to work with K- pop producer Frants on the track ‘How U Doin’, TWICE’s second Japanese studio album. She also designed three distinct pairs of SPRIS shoes, as well as the group’s limited edition Page Two album cover.
As part of the Melody Project series, she released a cover of Justin Bieber’s ‘Off My Face’ on October 22, 2021.

Impact & Influence
Her desire for authenticity fuels her career as an idol. She admitted to ‘GQ Korea’ that she may not be the most attractive person, but she doubts the necessity of hiding her true appearance.
Some of her lyrical work with TWICE, such as ‘Young and Wild’ from the group’s 2018 EP ‘Yes or Yes’ and ‘Strawberry’ from the EP ‘Fancy You’, which was published in 2019, highlight her desire to be free and express oneself.
She doesn’t generally behave like an idol off the stage, but at ‘Cannes’ she adopted American actress Kristen Stewart’s short hairstyle and strolled barefoot down the red carpet. She also refuses to wear a mask while she is out alone, despite the fact that Korean celebrities typically do so to avoid being recognised.
In an interview, she said that, “I don’t think I’m a celebrity, and I need to go out and move around. I should be comfortable and not be bothered by the gaze of others”.
