Overview of Ditto
The South Korean film ‘Ditto’, released on 16 November 2022, is the remake of the old South Korean movie ‘Ditto’. The movie ‘Ditto’ released in 2000 is directed by Kim Jung-kwon and featured Yoo Ji-tae, Kim Ha-neul, Ha Ji-won, Shin Cheol-jin, Park Yong-woo, and Kim Min-joo.

Synopsis
Mu-nee, a college student, operates an old ham radio sitting in her study room. The words that she uttered through the microphone stimulate the components of the radio.
Kim Yong wanders inside his campus on his bicycle. On his way to the classroom, he meets one of his friends and is informed that the new students are mostly girls. He is pursuing his major in mechanics, and most of his classmates are boys. Therefore, he decides to make the first move to befriend a pretty girl before anyone else approaches her. He leaves her a message, and accepting his kindness, Seo Han-sol comes to meet him in front of the campus gate. Since she is new to the campus, she asks him to show her around.
In no time, Seo Han-sol gets along with Kim Yong. Both of them spent the whole day together looking around the campus. He walks her to her dorm at night, and before leaving, Han-sol reminds him that there is an eclipse tonight.
After spending an entire day together, Kim Yong learned that Han-sol is interested in electronics and radios. Therefore, his friend Kim Eun-seong lends him his ham radio to impress her.
The next day, Han-sol and Kim Yong meet at the campus, and during their random talk, she shares her dreams and the reason for choosing the mechanical course. She wishes to help poor mechanics like her father. However, the whole mood gets ruined when Kim Yong tells her that his dream is to kiss her. He becomes dumbstruck when those words jump out of his mouth. An embarrassed Kim Yong runs to Eun-seong, who is standing a few yards away, to escape from Han-sol.
At night, he feels sad and anxious. At that time, he receives a call on the ham radio. He attends the call, and the girl on the other side is excited to hear the voice of Kim Yong. She introduced herself as Mu-nee, and as part of her project, she needs to interview a stranger. Kim Yong agrees to help her with the project, and they agree to meet in person at the campus at 12 in the noon.
As agreed, Kim Yong and the girl wait in front of the campus. Kim Young stands under the burning sun, waiting for Mu-nee. On the other hand, Mu-nee stands in the rain, waiting for him. The scene reveals that both of them are living in different time periods. Kim Yong lives in the past, and Mu-nee lives in the present.
After Kim Yong’s and Han-sol’s last meetup, he starts avoiding her.
In his next call with Mu-nee, she tells Kim Yong that they are living parallelly in different time periods. She tries to convince Kim Yong by fixing a time for their next meet-up. Also, she says that he can wait for her for 30 minutes, and if she fails to show up by that time, he can write a message on the telephone booth.
Later, they become good friends and start talking about their love lives. Since Kim Yong does not have a female friend, he asks for Mu-nee’s advice to get closer to Han-sol. Mu-nee is excited to help her new friend. Kim Yong dresses according to the instructions of Mu-nee, and it works. Slowly, the bond between Han-sol and Kim Yong starts to grow stronger, giving him the courage to confess his love.
One day, Mu-nee learns that Kim Yong is an old friend of her father. Eagerly, she asks more about the relationship between her father and Kim Yong. Eventually, she learns that Kim Yong is the first love of her mother. The unappealing news breaks both of their hearts. From the very next moment, Kim Yong starts to feel insecure about his relationship with Han-sol. He suspects Kim Eun-seong and Han-sol are secretly in a romantic relationship.
On a rainy day, Kim Yong’s pet turtle goes missing. He goes in search of it and finds Kim Eun-seong and Han-sol petting the turtle under a single umbrella on the street. The heartbroken Kim Yong breaks up with Han-sol without asking for an explanation. Also, he stops taking the calls from Mu-nee.
Mu-nee tells the whole story to her crush, Young-ji. A few days later, Mu-nee completes her project, and when she is out of the presentation room, Young-ji gifts her a book about time travel. Also, he tells her that the author of the book is giving a fan signing nearby. She runs to see the author and sees the middle-aged Kim Yong. Kim Yong is delighted to see Mu-nee in person and asks about Han-sol. He sings in the book, in which he writes the same words that Mu-nee had told her to give her the courage to confess her love. Later, she confesses her feelings to Young-ji.
Theme
Romance can be considered the primary theme of the movie ‘Ditto’. The hero, Kim Yong, tries to impress his crush Han-sol and win over her heart with the help of Mu-nee, his new female friend.
The secondary theme of ‘Ditto’ is time travel. Like in a dream, Mu-nee, a girl who lives in the present world, is communicating with a young man who still lives in the 90s. Surprisingly, they start to like the companionship of each other and start to share everything that happens in their walking lives. Through this, the movie portrays the human urge to open up to a stranger, believing they will not judge them.
