Synopsis
The thirty-year-old Woo Seo-ri wakes up from her coma. She has been in the hospital for 13 years after the terrible bus accident that took away the lives of a few people during her school days. Though her hospital bills were paid without fault (later it will be disclosed that it is the truck driver who paid her hospital bills as repentance for causing the accident), no one comes to see her on the day she openes her eyes.
Fallen into a coma as a high school girl, it takes her a while to accept that she is now thirty years old. Seeing her helplessness, Yoo Chan decides to give her shelter. However, his idea did not please his uncle, another thirty-year-old man named Gong Woo-jin.
Woo-jin is a set designer who flees to Germany after the death of his high-school crush. When Woo-jin was in high school, he had a crush on a teenage girl named Soo-mi. Soo-mi lost her life in the same bus accident that put Seo-ri in a coma. Though Woo-jin never got a chance to talk to her, he learned that her name was Soo-mi from the name embroidered on her school jacket.
Woo-jin was on the same bus before it crashed into a car. While sitting inside the bus, he saw his crush on the other seat. To his surprise, she approaches him and asks about the bus stop that she intends to deboard. Hoping he could make use of the opportunity to confess his feelings for her, he tells her to deboard at the wrong bus stop. When he turns to take her portrait from his chart box, one of her friends boards in. Out of panic, Woo-jin jumps off the bus.
Later, he runs to the next bus stop and witnesses the terrible accident. The guilt of making the girl stay longer on the bus makes him flee to Germany.
Seo-ri wakes up from her coma when Woo-jin is staying with his nephew, Yoo Chan, and a maid named Jennifer. Yoo Chan is a handsome high school boy who is also the captain of the school’s rowing club. After learning the story of Seo-ri, he decides to become her guardian. Nonetheless, Woo-jin permits Seo-ri to stay at their house for a night.
Seo-ri decides to search for her uncle and aunt, her only guardians. Later, Woo-jin also helps her searching for them. At the end of their search, her aunt shows up with the personal diary of her uncle. From the diary, she learns that her uncle divorced his pregnant wife to save his family from debt and later died due to bad health.
The friendship of Woo-jin and Seo-ri slowly buds into love. Realising their love for each other, Yoo Chan decides to give up the love that he developed for her.
Seo-ri decides to leave Korea to pursue a career in music therapy. However, her love for Woo-jin restricts her from going abroad for her studies. Woo-jin becomes happy with her decision.
One day she learns about the death of her friend Soo-mi, who has been with her on the bus. She goes to see the memorial of Soo-mi with Woo-jin. Seeing the photo of Soo-mi, Woo-jin realises that it was not his crush who actually died on that day. Later, he learns that Seo-ri was his childhood crush, and she was wearing Soo-mi’s jacket with her name on the day he discovered her name.
Woo-jin becomes depressed after knowing the truth and decides to flee again. On the other hand, Seo-ri discovers her portrait drawn by Woo-jin in the storeroom. At the end, she meets Woo-jin and makes him understand that the bus accident was not his fault. Later, they decide to marry when the right time comes.
Theme
‘Still 17’ is a fusion of themes like nostalgia, love, friendship, and guilt. When the thirty-year-old Seo-ri wakes up from her coma, she feels like her soul is trapped in the body of a thirty-year-old lady. For Seo-ri, it feels like she has slipped time from 17 to her thirties. Therefore, the show shows both events from the past and present.
Seo-ri’s friendship with Woo-jin and Yoo Chan helped her to adjust to the new environment. Along with showing Seo-ri’s struggle to fit into adulthood, the show also focuses on the feelings of guilt and grief that are endured by the other characters.
