South Korean actress Song Hye-kyo, gained popularity through her leading roles in television series and films, including ‘Autumn in My Heart’, ‘My Brilliant Life’, ‘Full House’, ‘That Winter The Wind Blows‘, ‘Encounter’, ‘All In’, ‘Descendants of the Sun‘, ‘The Grandmaster’, ‘Hwang Jin-yi’, ‘The Glory: Part 1‘, ‘The Glory: Part 2‘, and ‘The Queens’.
Early Life and Education
Although Song Hye-kyo was born on 2 November 1981 in Daegu, her parents registered her birth on 26 February 1982 as she was sick and doctors and her parents thought that she wouldn’t survive.
When she was young, her parents got divorced and she moved with her mother to Gangnam District. In her elementary school, she trained as a figure skater and left school when she was in the eighth grade. Later, she majored in film arts from a college at Sejong University.
Song Hye-kyo won first place in the SunKyung Smart Model Contest at the age of 14 in 1996 while she was a third-year junior high school student.
Career
Debut, Sensation and Global FameÂ
Song Hye-kyo made her entertainment debut as a model after appearing for a uniform company. This led her to be a cast member of the 1996 television series, ‘First Love’ in a small role as one of the students who is being tutored by Lee Seung-yeon’s role as Hyo-kyung. Whereas in 1997, she appeared in four television series like ‘Happy Morning’, ‘Beautiful Face’, ’70-minute Drama: When They Met’, and ‘One of a Pair’.
In 1997 and 1998, Hye-kyo played the role of a granddaughter in the K-drama, ‘Wedding Dress’ and was in seen in the role of Choi Eun-shil in the series, ‘Six Siblings’. Though she continuously appeared in sitcoms and dramas, she became a notable actress after playing one of the lead roles as Choi Eun-suh in the 2000 series, ‘Autumn in My Heart’ alongside Song Seung-heon and Won Bin. Her prominent role in this K-drama elevated her popularity in South Korea as well as in Asia.
In 2001, Song Hye-kyo played the lead role of Kim Yoon-hee alongside Bae Yong-joon, Song Yoon-ah and Kim Seung-woo in the television series, ‘Hotelier’ and as Jung Da-so in the main role in the series, ‘Guardian Angel’ as Kim Min-jong in the same year.
The stardom value of the stunning actress Hye-kyo continued to climb after playing the lead role together with Lee Byung-hun in the gambling drama, ‘All In’ in 2003. The following year, she appeared in a co-lead role as Ji Yeon-woo in the South Korean television series, ‘Sunlight Pours Down’ starring Jo Hyun-jae and Ryoo Seung-bum. She co-acted with K-pop singer Rain, Han Eun-jung and Kim Sung-soo in the 2004 South Korean television series, ‘Full House’ as Han Ji-eun.
Film Debut and Popularity
Song Hye-kyo’s debut in films came in 2005 with the South Korean film, ‘My Girl and I’ as Bae Su-eun, which is a remake of the Japanese film, ‘Crying Out Love, In the Center of the World’. After two years, she was cast in a title role in the South Korean biographical drama film, ‘Hwang Jin Yi’ by Chang Yoon-hyun in 2007.
Co-starring Hyun Bin, Hye-kyo played the role of director Joo Joon-young in Pyo Min-soo’s 2008 television series ‘Worlds Within’.
In 2011, she made a special appearance as a pretty girl in the South Korean caper film, ‘Countdown’ starring Jung Jae-young and Jeon Do-yeon and also appeared in the film, ‘A Reason to Live’ in the lead role as Da-hae.
Song Hye-kyo played a blind heiress in the South Korean romantic melodrama television series, ‘That Winter, the Wind Blows’ in 2013, co-starring Jo In-sung, who played the role of a con man pretending to be her long-lost brother. This melodrama is a remake of the 2002 Japanese drama, ‘Ai Nante Irane Yo, Natsu’.
In 2014, she starred in a lead role as Choi Mi-ra, alongside Gang Dong-won in the South Korean drama film, ‘My Brilliant Life’ by E J-yong. Also, she appeared in the Chinese film, ‘The Crossing’ as Zhou Yunfen in the same year.
Hye-kyo starred in the 2016 major hit South Korean television series, ‘Descendants of the Sun‘ as Doctor Kang Mo-yeon in a lead role alongside actors Song Joong-ki, Jin Goo, and Kim Ji-won. This drama received several awards, including 52nd Baeksang Arts.
After two years of her astounding role in ‘Descendants of the Sun’, she appeared in the series, ‘Encounter’ as Cha Soo-hyun, who is the daughter of a famous politician and former daughter-in-law of a wealthy family.
As of 2023, the Chinese romance film, The Queens’ in 2015 and a South Korean romantic drama, ‘Now, We Are Breaking Up’ in 2022, co-starring Jang Ki-yong, Oh Se-hun, Choi Hee-seo and Kim Joo-hun in the lead roles, and the series, ‘The Glory: Part 1 & 2’ on 10 March 2023 with Lee Do-hyun, Lim Ji-yeon, Yeom Hye-ran, Park Sung-hoon, and Jung Sung-il are the most recent films and dramas of the acting career of Song Hye-kyo.

Personal Life
Although Song Hye-kyo confirmed her relationship with actor Lee Byung-hun in 2003, they broke up in 2014. She revealed in 2009 that actor Hyun Bin and she were dating, but they also broke up in 2011.
Hye-kyo started dating her co-actor in the TV series ‘Descendants of the Sun’, Song Joong-ki in 2017 and the couple had scheduled to get married on 31 October 2017. Unluckily, the couple got divorced after two years in 2019.
