Synopsis
Yoon Jin-ah (Son Ye-jin) lives a typical life as a 35-year-old woman who works for a coffee chain company. The company named Coffee Bay basically manages several coffee stores throughout the city. She works as a supervisor, which means that she has to monitor several stores.
She still lives at her parents’ house with her mother, Kim Mi-yeon (Gil Hae-yeon), her retired father, Yoon Sang-ki (Oh Man-suk), and her younger brother, Yoon Seung-ho (Wi Ha-joon), a college student who prefers to spend his time playing video games. Her social interaction solely focuses on people at her workplace and her best friend Seo Kyung-seon (Jang So-yeon), who runs a coffee shop under the same franchise where Jin-ah works. She was unable to stand up for herself and endured constant sexual harassment at the workplace.

Jin-ah is reckless, clumsy, and vulnerable to someone who is kind to her, flatters her, and plays around with her as a joke. Yoon Jin-ah had just come off a broken relationship with Lee Gyu-min (Oh Ryong), who had cheated on her. Lee Gyu-min is a lawyer who comes from a wealthy family but is shamelessly immature and never truly values Jin-ah.
Around the time Jin-ah is picking up her broken pieces, her best friend Seo Kyung-seon’s 31-year-old younger brother, Seo Joon-hee (Jung Hae-in), returns to the country after working abroad in the USA for three years. While getting reacquainted with his elder sister’s best friend, Jin-ah, they both became close to each other, and they often dined out and spent time together. Joon-hee hints at a long-standing crush on Jin-ah, helps her get out of a few difficult situations, and begins to fall in love with her.

Her parents were unaware of her breakup with Lee Gyu-min and invited Lee Gyu-min to their house. Jin-ah reveals her ex-boyfriend’s betrayal in front of others, and Gyu-min argues that she is too unfaithful to engage in another relationship. That’s when Joon-hee arrives home while the family is in a ruckus.
Jin-ah’s mother, however, is furious about the breakup with the rich man and becomes even more furious later when Jin-ah and Joon-hee announce they have feelings for one another. Joon-hee rescues Jin-ah when her ex-boyfriend attempts to take her out in an attempt to win her back.

Kim Mi-yeon, Jin-ah’s mother strongly opposed the relationship between Jin-ah and Joon-hee, as Joon-hee was much younger in age than Jin-ah. Another concern was that Joon-hee belongs to a broken family as his father cheated on his mom and remarried.
Ending Explained
Jin-ah faces a lot of pressure from her mother’s constant nagging and to save Jin-ah from this stressful environment, Joon-hee decides to ask for a re-assignment to the US to take Jin-ah with him. However, Jin-ah refuses to go with him and the couple sets apart.

In the ending, a time skip also takes place, wherein Jin-ah is in her forties but still single. She became an incredibly strong woman who established her independence and had a clear insight into what she wanted in her life. At the crux of the chaos at her workplace, Jin-ah chooses to resign from her job, leave her home, and move to Jeju.
Later on, Joon-hee finds his way to Jin-ah after realising that he cannot live without her, no matter what. They reunite after he returns, and this reunion opens up their feelings and wounds.
Theme
Apart from a romantic storyline, ‘Something in the Rain’ is also noted for its meticulous portrayal of gender stereotypes and societal expectations with honesty and sensitivity. The narrative sheds light on the South Korean way of life.
The whole stretch of the drama is enriched with insights into family, friendship, and love without overwhelming the scenarios. At a slow and steady pace, the drama explores workplace harassment and the judgmental intrusiveness of family members.
There is a norm that is still very observable in South Korea that women are considered the weaker gender in the workplace, and the whole society is well-curated in drama.
The mother tries to assert control over her family in the name of protecting their reputation and future, and a glimpse into the workplace harassment a woman faces while maturing marks their significance in the love story.
The drama tackles the everyday hustles and societal pressures couples face and explores how Jin-ah and Joon-hee go from friends to lovers and how societal norms can put restrictions on a growing relationship.
Jin-ah and Joon-hee’s struggle is a real concern for couples because a woman dating a younger man isn’t typical in Korean society. The drama displayed the taboo of having a huge age difference between couples and its corresponding challenges.
