Early Life & EducationÂ
Wi Ha-joon was born on August 5, 1991, in Soando Island, South Jeolla Province, South Korea. His zodiac sign is Leo. He attended Wando High School, South Jeolla Province, and Baekam High School, Jeongeup- si, North Jeolla Province, South Korea.
Ha-joon’s parents did not support his desire to work in the entertainment sector, thus he was forced to attend humanities high school despite his desire to attend an arts high school. He expressed his desire to join the entertainment sector in a sincere letter to his parents during his third year of high school. After receiving the letter, his parents chose to enroll him in a school in Seoul. His initial aspiration when he arrived in Seoul was to become a dancer, but he eventually found his passion for acting.
When he left Jeolla Province and went to an acting school in Seoul, he struggled to communicate owing to dialect differences. He kept to himself for a year as he wasn’t comfortable with the Seoul accent. His studies at Sungkyul University in Anyang, South Korea, focused on theatre and film.
After completing only the first semester of his studies, he joined Air Force Unit 709 on November 28, 2011, as a part of his mandatory military service. However, he made sure to continue his education throughout his military life.
Career and Achievements
Films:
He made his film debut in 2012 with the South Korean short film ‘Peace in Them’ and in 2015, with the South Korean film ‘Coin Locker Girl,’ written and directed by Han Jun-hee, he made his feature film debut. In the movie, he played the supporting character known as young ‘Woo-gon’. The Film follows the story of an orphan girl who was abandoned in a coin locker when she was a baby and brought up by a woman, who is the boss of a loan shark. After going through a number of upsetting events, II Young kills the mother and takes over the company.
After that, he made appearances in South Korean films ‘Bad Guys Always Die’ (2015), Anarchist from Colony (2017), The Chase (2017), and Girl Cops (2019). He then portrayed ‘Ha-joon’ in the South Korean horror movie ‘Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum’ in 2018. He received nominations for the ‘Blue Dragon Film Award’, ‘Chunsa Film Art Award’, and ‘Grand Bell Award’ for ‘Best New Actor’ for his work in the film.
In 2021, he played the character of ‘Jeong Do-hyeon’, in the television movie ‘Shark: The Beginning’.
Dramas:
He made his television debut in 2016 with the MBC Kdrama ‘Goodbye Mr. Black’. However, his first prominent performance was in the 2017 KBS2 drama ‘My Golden Life’ as the former driver of the lead character.
Then he had cameo appearances in the dramas, ‘Something in the Rain’ (2018) and ‘Matrimonial Chaos’ (2018). Later, he made an appearance as ‘Lee Ha-min’ in the YouTube drama ‘With Coffee’. He made his debut as a lead in the 2019 season of the tvN show ‘Romance Is a Bonus Book’ as ‘Ji Seo-joon’. The role was of an independent book designer who falls in love with a divorced and jobless former advertising copywriter, who finds love and a career again after meeting him.
In 2021, he had an appearance in the Netflix survival drama ‘Squid Game’ written and directed by South Korean filmmaker Hwang Dong-hyuk. He portrayed the main character Hwang Jun-ho, a police officer who enters the game undercover as a guard in order to locate his missing brother. The show was extremely popular all over the world and became Netflix’s most-watched show when it launched.
