Biography of Suga

The stage names Suga and Agust D are professionally used by Min Yoon-gi, who was born on 9 March 1993. He is a rapper, songwriter, and record producer from South Korea. He made his public debut in 2013 as a member of the South Korean boy band BTS through Big Hit Music.

‘Agust D’, his first mixtape as a solo artist, was initially released in 2016 and then again in 2018 for digital download and streaming. It peaked at number three on the Billboard World Albums Chart. His second solo mixtape, ‘D-2’, was released in 2020 and reached its peak positions at number two on Australia’s ARIA Album Chart, number seven on the UK Albums Chart, and number eleven on the US Billboard 200.

Early Life and Education

Min Yoon-gi was born on 9 March 1993 in Daegu, South Korea. He attended Taejeon Elementary School, Gwaneum Middle School, and Apgujeong High School. After earning a degree in Broadcasting and Entertainment from Global Cyber University in March 2019, he enrolled at Hanyang Cyber University to pursue a Master of Business Administration in Advertising and Media.

The first few letters of the term “shooting guard”, the position he once held in basketball, are the source of his stage name. For his mixtape, he went by the alias ‘Agust D’, which is derived from the initials DT for Daegu Town, where he was born, and “Suga”, written backwards.

Career and Achievements

Beginnings

After hearing ‘Ragga Muffin’ by Stony Skunk, Min Yoongi became interested in rap, asserting it was unlike anything he had ever heard. After hearing Epik High, he made the decision to pursue rapping. At the age of 13, he started penning song lyrics and discovered MIDI. By the age of 17, he had a part-time job at a recording studio.

He started writing and composing music, rapping, and performing. He worked as an underground rapper going by the name Gloss before getting signed. In 2010, he co-wrote and produced ‘518-062’, a song honouring the Gwangju Uprising, with the hip-hop group D-Town.

At Present

 trained under Big Hit Entertainment for three years alongside members J-Hope and RM before initially joining the company as a music producer. On Mnet’s M Countdown, he made his debut as a member of BTS with the song ‘No More Dream’ from their debut single album 2 Cool 4 Skool. On all of BTS’ albums, he produced and wrote the lyrics for a variety of songs.

The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 2, the follow-up EP to 1, included Suga’s ‘Intro: Never Mind’, another introduction. The song was the opening track on BTS’ 2016 compilation album ‘The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever’ when it was released on November 15, 2015. Not until 2020, when he released “Interlude: Shadow” as a part of the Map of the Soul: 7 album, did Suga perform another opening song for BTS.

Two solo tracks by Suga were also released under the group’s name. The first, ‘First Love’, is a song by BTS from their 2016 studio album Wings. It is a monologue-like autobiographical rap track. His song ‘Trivia: Seesaw’ on the 2018 compilation album Love Yourself: Answer discussed the ups and downs of falling in love. He and the other BTS members received the fifth-class Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit from the President of South Korea in the same year.

Along with the other BTS members, he was chosen by President Moon Jae-in to serve as the Special Presidential Envoy for Future Generations and Culture in July 2021. His duties included “expanding South Korea’s diplomatic efforts and global standing” in the international arena.

Solo Career

On 15 August 2016, he offered a free self-titled mixtape via SoundCloud. As he felt “trapped in some sort of framework,” he decided against releasing the project as a commercial studio album. It was ranked among the top 20 mixtapes of 2016 by Fuse TV. Suga collaborated with singer Suran on a single for his mixtape in 2016, and the following year, in 2017, he wrote the song ‘Wine’ for Suran.

The song received the Best R&B Genre Award at the Melon Music Awards on December 2, 2017, and it peaked at number two on the Gaon Digital Chart in South Korea. For his efforts on the track, Suga was also given the Hot Trend Award.

The reissue peaked at number three on the Billboard World Albums Chart, position five on the Heatseekers Albums chart, and position 74 on the Top Album Sales chart in the US. The week of March 3, Min Yoongi as Agust D peaked at position 46 on the Emerging Artists chart. In February 2018, Suga re-released his debut mixtape for digital download and streaming.

The digital single ‘Eight’, which features and was produced by Min Yoongi, was released by IU on May 6, 2020. On both the Gaon Digital Chart and the World Digital Song Sales Chart, the song debuted at number one. On May 22, Suga released D-2 (the follow-up to Agust D), his second mixtape, along with the music video for its lead single, ‘Daechwita’, which peaked at number 76 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The mixtape became the highest-charting album by a Korean solo artist in the US at the time when it debuted at number 11 on the Billboard 200. When it debuted at number seven on the UK Albums Chart, it also became the first Korean solo album to make it into the top 10 there.

Suga revised the iconic ringtone for Samsung, ‘Over The Horizon’, in 2021. T he track was unveiled as a part of Samsung’s “Unpacked 2021” celebration. For Japanese singer MI, he later produced the single ‘You’, which was released on October 15. He appeared on the song “Girl of My Dreams” from the posthumous album Fighting Demons by American rapper Juice WRLD in December.

The song gave Min Yoongi his second appearance on the chart as a solo artist when it debuted at number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100. When Psy’s eighth studio album, Psy 9th, was released on April 29, 2022, it featured the lead single, ‘That That’, which he co-wrote, produced, and was a part of. Suga was named the face of the Maison Valentino Essentials campaign for its menswear staples and a brand ambassador for Valentino in January 2023.

Artistry

Min Yoongi is the sole creator of the music he writes, arranges and composes. The Korea Music Copyright Association credits him with over 100 registered songs. He performs the piano and primarily creates R&B and hip-hop music. He wrote his lyrics with the idea that his music would become “many people’s strength”, with themes that are “full of dreams and hope”. He attributes his interest in hip-hop music to Stony Skunk and Epik High.

He specifically attributes his interest in the genre to the former’s reggae-hip hop fusion album Ragga Muffin (2005) and its title track. He was elevated to full membership in the Korea Music Copyright Association in January 2018. According to a Gallup Korea survey, he was the 13th most popular idol of the year in 2017. He then finished seventh in 2018 and ninth in 2019.

Philanthropy

Min Yoongi pledged in 2014 to buy his fans meat if he became successful as a musician. In honour of BTS’ “ARMY”, the group’s fan base, he gave beef to 39 orphanages on his 25th birthday four years later. He gave the Korea Pediatric Cancer Foundation 100 million won (US $88,000) and 329 BT21 Shooky dolls for his 26th birthday in 2019.

He gave 100 million won to the Hope Bridge National Disaster Relief Association on 27 February 2020 to support relief and prevention efforts in Daegu, his hometown, which was one of the areas of South Korea that was most severely affected by the coronavirus outbreak at the time. He gave Daegu’s Keimyung 100 million won on 9 March 2021.
