‘Oh My Venus’ is a South Korean drama series which released on November 16, 2015, was written by Kim Eun-ji and directed by Kim Hyung-suk. Kim Young-ho is a renowned personal trainer who trains Hollywood stars in America. Following a scandal with a popular actress, he returns to Korea to wait for the scandal to settle down. On the way back to Korea, Kang Joo-eun (Shin Min-a) suddenly collapses on the plane and Young-ho saves Kang Joo-eun. Synopsis
Kang Joo-eun is a hard-working and blunt woman who is loved and admired by everyone who knows her. She was once the ‘Venus’ of her high school because of her immense beauty, which made other girls envious of her. She had a strong determination to become a lawyer even though her family situation was quite poor.
At the age of 33, she achieved her biggest dream of becoming a lawyer and was in a long-term relationship with her school best friend, Im Woo-sik for 15 years. However, she had not taken care of her body and became chubby and overweight and often ignored by her colleagues as well as society.
Later, Kang Joo-eun was hit with an embarrassing incident with Kim Young-ho and his two friends on a plane journey back from a business trip to the United States. Kim Young-ho is a celebrity personal trainer who is involved in a scandal in the United States and was forced to move to Korea. However, his wealthy family has another plan. Once he is back in Korea, his grandmother appoints Young-ho as the new president of the family medical services company, thus putting a stop to his journey back to the United States. The series also explores a leg injury of Kim Young-ho’s past in his childhood.
A lost purse incident reconnects Kim Young-ho to Kang Joo-eun which is another personal embarrassment for Joo-eun. This is when she witnesses her ex-boyfriend, Woo-eik and finds out that he is now dating her new superior, Oh Su-jin (Yoo In-young).
Later Kang Jo-eun convinces Kim Young-ho to help her lose weight. As they work on her physical transformation, both realize that their intimacy is blooming. They both cure each other’s emotional wounds and eventually fall in love. For the first time in his life, Kim finds someone with whom he can be himself.

‘Oh My Venus’ attractively portrays how two different people encounter their paths and help each other in healing their trauma and emotional incisions without fault-finding and judgements. It is one such Korean drama that explores the solemnity of both mentally and physically healthy relationships. ‘Oh My Venus’ also sheds light on the value of friendship. South Korea is prominently known for hyper fixation on cosmetic surgeries and external appearances.
Ever since kindergarten started in South Korea, a harmful stigma of inferiority and insecurity has been thrown on the people. Due to this problematic consideration, men and women have become self-critical, which contributes to the dangerous cycle of feeling a low sense of self-worth and wanting to go for cosmetic surgery. In these circumstances, ‘Oh My Venus’ has a strong message to convey that real beauty is not just in physical appearance, but in being altruistic, courageous, and bold.
