Overview of Mood of the Day

‘Mood of the Day’ is a South Korean romantic comedy movie directed by Jo Kyu-jang. It was released on 14 January 2016 and features Moon Chae-won and Yoo Yeon-seok in lead roles. It revolves around the story of Soo-jung (Moon Chae-won) and Jae-hyun (Yoo Yeon-seok).

Soo-jung and Jae-hyun meet on their way to Busan for their work-related matters. Realising that both of them have to meet the same person, Soo-jung decides to accompany Jae-hyun. Besides the divergence in their personal beliefs and ideas, there springs an emotional attachment which changes their lives.

Synopsis

Once a skilled basketball player, Kim Jae-hyun decides to be the sports manager of a company. He is as gifted as to enchant women with his smile, like he is skilled in basketball. Currently, his motive is to send the basketball player Kang Jin-chul to America for the sports company. To discuss this matter with Kang Jin-chul and make him go to America, Kim Jae-hyun travels from Seoul to Busan to meet him.

At the railway station, he meets Bae Soo-jung, a young and talented woman working in an advertising company. For a new project, she also has to persuade Kang Jin-chul to sign a contract with her company. Therefore, her company arranges a meeting with Kang Jin-chul. It is on that journey, Kim Jae-hyun meets her.

To his surprise, she sits next to him on the train. Kim Jae-hyun, who is already excited to befriend her, starts a friendly chitchat. All his attempts go in vain when she shows no interest in forming a friendship with him. Also, she switched her seat to avoid talking to him. However, when the other passengers claimed their reserved seats, she returned to her seat next to Kim Jae-hyun.Kim Jae-hyun becomes happy for getting a second opportunity to talk to Soo-jung.

Their train journey gets disrupted when the train suddenly stops in the middle. Kim Jae-hyun stepped off the train, thinking that the train would not resume its journey soon. Seeing him leaving the train, Bae Soo-jung accompanies him, hoping to meet Kang Jin-chul within the appointed time. From Kim Jae-hyun’s talks, she already knows that he heads to Busan to meet Kang Jin-chul.

Meanwhile, the train resumed its journey, leaving the two of them alone in the empty tracks. To complete their journey to Busan, Kim Jae-hyun arranges his friend’s car. Together they start their road trip to Busan. On the way, he boasts about the numerous one-night stands that he had in his life. Bae Soo-jung, who has a different perspective about life, argues with him.

He drops her off at the correct time at the meeting point and drives to the venue where his meeting is arranged. On the way, he noticed the laptop and the bag that Bae Soo-jung left forgotten in the car. Meanwhile, Bae Soo-jung gets nervous in the meeting room for forgetting her laptop inside the car.

To her surprise, she sees Kim Jae-hyun connecting the laptop for her. Feeling relieved, she makes a satisfactory presentation. Later, she goes to the restaurant that Kim Jae-hyun told her when they were travelling in the car together. Coincidentally, Kim Jae-hyun meets Bae Soo-jung in the restaurant while she is waiting for her food. Since Kim Jae-hyun was late for his appointment, he missed the chance to meet Kang Jin-chul.

Bae Soo-jung is surprised when Kim Jae-hyun introduces her as his girlfriend to the restaurant owner, who is also his aunt. When they step out of the restaurant after finishing their lunch, Kim Jae-hyun’s cousin informs him about Kang Jin-chul’s current location.

Kim Jae-hyun heads to meet Kang Jin-chul and confronts his coach at the practice court. He discusses the matter with Kang Jin-chul’s coach, but the coach tells Kim Jae-hyun to stop forcing Kang Jin-chul to move to America. From the practice court, Kim Jae-hyun and Bae Soo-jung head towards a temple in the hope of meeting Kang Jin-chul.

Together they climb the steps of the temple and reach its viewpoint. Sitting there, Kim Jae-hyun massages Bae Soo-jung’s feet, which are tired of walking in high heels. Touched by his action, Bae Soo-jung asks him to go for a one-night stand. He agrees, and together they go to a hotel room. However, Kim Jae-hyun feels guilty about treating Bae Soo-jung the way he treats his one-night-stand companions. Since she is the one who asked for the one-night stand, Bae Soo-jung feels insulted by this reason and leaves the room.

To calm her down, Kim Jae-hyun runs after her and then takes her to the basketball practice court, where he used to practice years ago. Sitting on the training court’s floor, Bae Soo-jung discusses the problems that she faces in her ten-year-old romantic relationship. Later there, they spent the night together.

The next day, Kim Jae-hyun walks her to the railway station. After her departure, he meets Kang Jin-chul. When Kim Jae-hyun raises the proposal to move to America, Kang Jin-chul refuses, saying that he cannot leave his girlfriend alone in the country.

Due to his failure to complete the task, Kim Jae-hyun’s boss insults him. Later, Kim Jae-hyun resigns from his post and joins Kang Jin-chul as his personal manager. Meanwhile, Bae Soo-jung is discussing breaking up their relationship with her boyfriend.

The next day, Kim Jae-hyun goes to Bae Soo-jung’s office to give her the contract paper signed by Kang Jin-chul for her company’s ad. Since she is out for a coffee, Kim Jae-hyun gives the contract paper to the receptionist.

While drinking coffee, Bae Soo-jung tells her friends about her breakup. Also, she casually tells about the one-night stand that she went on with Kim Jae-hyun. Kim Jae-hyun, who just stepped into the cafe, overhears Bae Soo-jung’s conversation. He becomes sad when he learns from her mouth that she has only taken the relationship with him as a casual one.

Later, they meet outside the coffee shop. A disappointed Kim Jae-hyun does not bother to open up his heart in front of her. In the evening, he goes to a bar with his friend. On the other hand, Bae Soo-jung also feels sad for not confessing her feelings to Kim Jae-hyun.

The next day, the receptionist gives the file that Kim Jae-hyun brings to the office. The agreement paper and the note attached to it make her realise Kim Jae-hyun’s love for her. She hurries to meet him and finds him in the railway station. Finally, they unite by confessing their feelings.

‘Mood of the Day’ tells the story of Bae Soo-jung and Kim Jae-hyun. Both of them share different ideologies. However, they are able to sense the goodness of each other’s hearts when they spend time together. Kim Jae-hyun’s friendship with Bae Soo-jung teaches him the values of love and how warm it feels to live a peaceful life with a life partner. Despite all his casual one-night stands, he realised the feeling of being in love after meeting her.

On the contrary, Bae Soo-jung figures out the man that she longed for in Kim Jae-hyun. Apart from his playboy character, she finds him as an understanding and caring person who helps in healing the uneasiness in her heart, which is the aftermath of her relationship with her boyfriend.
