Biography of Lim Ju-hwan

Lim Ju-hwan is a South Korean actor and model. After pursuing his modelling career, he made his acting debut in the 2004 TV series ‘Magic’. His noticeable works include ‘Tamra, the Island’ and ‘Ugly Alert’. Lim’s role in his 2006 debut movie ‘A millionaire’s First Love’ helped him land many supportive roles in different films and a huge fan base.

Early Life and Education

Lim was born on May 18, 1982, in Seoul, South Korea. As a child, he was extremely shy and reserved. His interest in acting and the theatrical field grew only after joining ‘Kwangdae Tokkaebi’, a theatrical group in his high school. He donned many roles and was the best performer in his group. He played the character of a pastor in Neil Simon’s play, ‘The Good Doctor’, which helped him grab the ‘Best Actor Award’ at the Fourth ‘National Youth Film Festival’. Lim also proved his filmmaking skills by directing ‘Pay Tuition Back’ in his senior high school year. That’s where he met fellow actor, Shin Dong-wook, with whom Lim maintains a healthy friendship to date.

Later on, Lim Ju-hwan did his graduation and post-graduation from Daejin University in Theatre and Films. Signing up with one of South Korea’s prominent modelling and acting agencies, ‘The Men’, Lim found his future in the entertainment world. This was his stepping stone to the television world and thereafter, the big screen.

Career

Lim Ju-hwan played his debut role in the SBS drama series ‘Magic’ which aired in 2004. This was after his brief modelling journey. Following it, he played a minor role in the 2005 drama ‘A Love to Kill’. Then, in 2016, Lim was introduced to the film world with ‘A Millionaire’s First Love’. He also played the childhood role of the main character ‘Hyun-ki’ in ‘Arang’ released in 2006. His roles were short and supportive at the beginning of his acting career. This included the roles in ‘Boys over Flowers’ which was aired in 2006 and ‘The Snow Queen’ released in 2009.

Lim’s charm and impeccable acting scooped a lot of female followers. However, the role he portrayed as a blind painter in episode 10 of the 2007 drama ‘Auction House’ aired on MBC, gained him much deserved appreciation.

The major headway in Lim Ju-hwan’s acting career came with his role as Park Gyu in the 2009 release ‘Tamra, The Island’. Initially, the drama received mixed reviews and did not push through as expected. The storyline established the relationship between foreigners and Korean natives in the 17th-century Joseon era. It is a blend of romantic comedy and historical fiction which made it a cult favourite in no time. This MBC series also gave Lim his first award under the category ‘New Actor of the Year’ award at the ‘Korean Culture and Entertainment Awards’.

To cater to his Japanese fans, he did a special 2-episode drama ‘Marriage War of Doenjang-kun and Natto-chan’ in 2010. The storyline narrates the romantic fable of a Japanese woman and a Korean man. Ju-hwan’s role as a cynical youngster in the musical drama series ‘What’s Up’, released in 2010, played alongside Big Bang member Daesung and actress Jang Hee-jin, is also a notable role in his filmography. Apart from drama acting, he did some movies including ‘M’, ‘The Frozen Flower’ and ‘Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do’ in the years 2007 and 2008 respectively.

After playing the role of a big-hearted destitute in the 2011 comedy-drama ‘The Suicide Forecast’, Lim enlisted for compulsory military training. Despite having prior heart problems, Ju-hwan was admitted to the hospital after fainting during his military training. He completed his course even though he was excused from doing the rest of the training.

Lim shifted from Yedang Entertainment to Blossom Entertainment after his training in 2013. He starred in a 2013 SBS drama, ‘The Ugly Hearts’, which resumed his acting career. His next major project was the 2014 drama, ‘The Con Artists’, which was a major hit internationally. Other works that followed in 2015 were a period drama ‘Shine or Go Crazy’, depicting the budding romance between a prince and a princess, and the romantic thriller ‘Oh My Ghost‘, for which Ju-hwan received the title of ‘Best Villain’ at the ‘Annual Drama Fever Awards’.

Other major drama works include ‘Uncontrollably Fond’, ‘Broker’ and ‘The Bride of Habaek’ released in 2016 and 2017 respectively. In 2019 he gave life to the character Fakuda in the historic melodrama series named ‘Different Dreams’. ‘The Game: Towards Zero’ is a 2020 thriller series and Ju-hwan perfected the role of a forensic scientist in it. His latest project is a KBS2 series, ‘Three bold siblings’ released in 2022.

Ju-hwan also starred in some movies dealing with different genres including ‘Because I Love You’ and ‘Project Wolf Hunting’ in the year 2021 and 2022.

Apart from his acting roles, Ju-hwan has made guest appearances in two music videos-in BoA’s ‘Kiss of Heart’ and Huh Gak’s ‘Miss You’ in 2006 and 2017 respectively.

Military Life

Lim Ju-hwan enlisted for military training in 2011 at the age of 29. It was during the peak of his career. He underwent five months of basic training at the Nonsan Training Camp in South Chungcheong Province and later signed in as an active-duty soldier.

Unfortunately, he fainted during one of the training sessions and was diagnosed with heart-related issues. Being hospitalised for three months, he was allowed early discharge from the service. Nonetheless, his strong-willed and valiant self did not quit and completed the full-course training.
