Biography of Jackson Wang 

Jackson Wang is a Hong Kong rapper, singer, songwriter, dancer and fashion designer. He is a member of the South Korean boy band Got7 by JYP Entertainment. He is the founder of the record label Team Wang, the creative director and the lead designer for its subsidiary fashion brand Team Wang Design.

Jackson Wang released his first solo album ‘Mirrors’ in 2019 and his second album ‘Magic Man’ in 2022. In 2021, he left JYP Entertainment and formed the Chinese hip-hop group Panthepack under Team Wang. Before debuting in the music industry, he was a sabre fencer and competed in numerous domestic and international competitions.

Early Life and Education

Jackson Wang was born on 28 March 1994 in Hong Kong and was raised by two athletic parents: fencer Wang Ruiji and gymnast Sophia Chow.

He started his fencing training at a young age and was a part of the Hong Kong national fencing team. He won several awards including first place at the Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championship 2011.

Career

In 2010, he was scouted by a South Korean talent agency JYP Entertainment representative and was invited to participate in the global auditions in Kowloon. The same year, he successfully won, ranking first out of 2,000 applicants.

His successful audition made him decline his scholarship to Stanford University for fencing while preparing for the 2012 London Olympics and he moved to Seoul for his K-pop training.

 Debut with Got7

In 2013, he appeared on the reality survival program ‘Win: Who Is Next’ where YG Entertainment trainees and JYP trainees were to compete against each other. He appeared along with Mark, Yugyeom, and BamBam and was selected as a member of Got7. On 16 January 2014, the group released the first single ‘Girls Girls Girls’, of its debut EP Got It? .

The same year he joined his first variety show SBS Roommate. His other variety show credits include Star King, Law of the Jungle, Happy Together, Radio Star, Problematic Men, Our Neighborhood Arts and Physical Education, Saturday Night Live Korea, A Look At Myself etc.

In 2015, he was appointed as a new MC for the SBS music show Inkigayo following the departure of ZE: A’s Kwanghee. In 2015, he appeared with He Jiong for the show Please Take Care of My Refrigerator called ‘Go Fridge’. In 2016, he was the MC for Fresh Sunday on Hunan TV.

In 2016, Got7 performed their first concert in Seoul and released Got7’s second Japanese extended play ‘Turn Up’. Jackson Wang dropped out of all his group activities due to health concerns and conflicting schedules.

In 2016, Jackson Wang released his first solo commercial for Midea in China and appeared on the Chinese reality TV series Fighting Man. He was named Variety Star of the Year the same year at the Tencent Variety Show Star Awards.

Early Musical Releases

In 2017, he released his first solo album in China. JYP Entertainment established a management team, Team Wang for his activities in China. On 22 October 2018, he signed with Canxing Culture to enter the global market and released the single ‘Different Game’ featuring Gucci Mane. On 12 June 2019, he featured on the song ‘Rumble’ from the album ‘Diaspora’ by GoldLink and Lil Nei. The same year, he collaborated with Qin Fen and released the single ‘Another’.

He is the designer and the creative director of his fashion brand Team Wang Design. The first collection was titled ‘The Original’ and went on to release a limited capsule collection with StockX. He collaborated with Swedish duo Galantis, releasing the EDM single Pretty Please. He has invested in the esports organization Victory Five.

In 2020, he released his Chinese-language single ‘Should’ve Let Go’ with JJ Lin. Alongside Jessi, he appeared at the KBS Song Festival. He is the fastest Chinese artist to reach 10 million views on Vevo.

Departure from JYPE and Solo Career

On 19 January 2021, along with other Got7 members, he left JYP Entertainment after their exclusive contracts expired. He partnered with Sublime Artist Agency and released the self-produced Chinese single ‘Alone’.

He featured on three new singles ‘Magnetic’ by Rain, ‘So Bad’ by Vava and M.I.A by Afgan. His English single was titled ‘LMLY’ and in 2021, he performed it at the Harper’s Bazaar Fashion Icons Party and was named the Musician of the Year.

He released the remix of Rich Brian, NIKI and Warren Hue’s ‘California’ and released another English single ‘Drive You Home’ in collaboration with Internet Money. Along with rapper Ice, J.Sheon and Karencici, he formed a hip-hop group Panthepack under his label Team Wang.

On 28 August 2021, they released the single ‘Buzz’. He also partnered with the Singapore Tourism Board for the SingapoReimagine global marketing campaign. On 31 March 2022, he released the new single ‘Blow’ from the album ‘Magic Man’ which was released on 9 September 2022.
