Biography of Jessi
Jessica Ho, best known as Jessi, is an American rapper, singer, and entertainer based in South Korea. She was born to Ho Jong-jin and Ho Sun-hwa on December 17, 1988. Born in New York, raised in New Jersey, and relocated to South Korea when she was 15 years old.
Along with Tiffany Young and Jessica Jung from Girls’ Generation, she attended Korea Kent Foreign School. In the same audition as her two classmates, she was accepted by S.M. Entertainment. She made the decision not to join the label, though, as she felt its musical style did not align with her own. She struggled to adjust to Korean culture before taking a break from the music industry. She did not achieve immediate success following her debut. Sometimes she had to sleep in saunas as she did not have enough money for a place to stay.
Jessi was greatly influenced by American hip-hop culture while growing up in the 1990s. She has even called that time period the “golden age” of the hip-hop genre. Jessi’s distinctive musical taste was influenced by listening to artists like Biggie, Whitney Huston, Jay-Z, TLC, Mariah Carey, and Maria. After taking part in the reality competition programme Unpretty Rapstar, where she had to compete against contestants who were much younger than her, Jessi’s popularity skyrocketed. Her strong performance and charisma captured the audience’s attention despite the fact that she placed second in the competition. On this show, she also ran into her first controversy when some viewers complained that she was being too confrontational.
Early Career
Jessi made her debut in South Korea in 2005 as a member of the hip-hop group Uptown. She briefly left the group in 2006 to pursue a solo career but returned in 2009 as a member of the hip-hop trio Lucky J. The group disbanded in 2016, after which she left YMC Entertainment and joined Psy’s record label P Nation. She continued her solo career under P Nation until 2022 when she left the label.
Several of her solo and group singles have achieved commercial success; five of them made the Gaon Digital Chart’s Top 10, including her highest-charting solo single “Nunu Nana” and the number-one single by the South Korean supergroup Refund Sisters, “Don’t Touch Me.”
