Synopsis
Boo Yong-joo (Han Suk-kyu), is a triple-board certified surgeon, who was once at the peak of his career and used to work at Geosan University Hospital, a top medical center in Seoul, South Korea. After a daunting incident happened at the hospital, one-day Yong-joo abruptly gives it all up to live in isolation and he later retires to a secluded countryside hospital named Doldam, located in Gangwon Province. He changes his name to Kim Sa-bu and goes by Teacher Kim and refers to himself as ‘Romantic Doctor’. Teacher Kim’s romantic character is not just about love, but it’s about Kim’s romantic ideals and thoughts.
Meanwhile, another character Kang Dong-joo (Yoo Yeon-seok) is introduced. Kang Dong-joo is a highly determined young surgeon who is forthright and outspoken. The unfair death of his father at a young age gave him an intense desire to become a doctor and take revenge to restore justice to the medical community.
Kang Dong-joo values hospital politics over patients and soon he succumbs to the very corrupt values he once committed. Later, he faced several occupational and career losses. Then Dong-joo got transferred to Boo Yong-joo’s Doldam Hospital after the demise of a VIP patient whom he treated.
Yoon Seo-jeong (Seo Hyun-jin) is a surgeon working at Geosan Hospital. She is completely dedicated towards her job thus known by her nickname ‘Crazy Whale’. Kang Dong-joo and Yoon Seo-jeong were working at Geosan University Hospital. They both were aggressive in the beginning, and they slowly realised a sort of intimacy between them.
After a disaster strikes, Yoon Seo-jeong quits her job and moves to Doldam Hospital. There they both meet Teacher Kim. He humbles both by exposing them to what makes a meaningful life. Teacher Kim guides Kang Dong-joo (Yoo Yeon-seok) and Yoon Seo-jeong (Seo Hyun-jin) to become the best doctors. He makes them capable of standing against the high authorities and money power in favour of their patients.

Amidst an era in which greed overrules precepts, this gripping medical drama about the growth of three doctors is a beacon of light to an amoral medical scenario.Dr. Romantic Season 1 takes a humanistic viewpoint on the values steering modern medical society. Without delving deeper into the medical specifications, the drama explores discrimination in the treatment of the rich and poor, how poor people get by medical expenses and especially what a doctor’s role in such circumstances is supposed to be.
Unlike other dramas, Dr. Romantic is not solely focused on revenge, though, there is a glimpse. The drama centres around the individual wounds and trauma of the characters, along with their journey towards healing.
