Biography of Bae Suzy

South Korean singer, actress, and model Bae Su-ji, best known by her stage name Bae Suzy, was born on October 10, 1994. She was a part of the JYP Entertainment girl group Miss A. She made her acting debut in the 2011 television series Dream High. Since then, she has appeared in a number of other series, including Gu Family Book (2013), Uncontrollably Fond (2016), While You Were Sleeping (2017), Vagabond (2019), Start-Up (2020), and Anna (2022). Bae Suzy debuted in her first movie, Architecture 101 (2012). She has been referred to as “The Nation’s First Love” in South Korea since her triumphant film debut.

Early Life and Education

On October 10, 1994, Bae Suzy was born in the Buk District of Gwangju, South Korea to Bae Wan-young and Jeong Hyun-sook. She has a younger brother and an elder sister. She graduated in 2013 from the School of Performing Arts, Seoul.

Debut with Miss A

Bae Suzy auditioned for MNET Superstar K in 2009 and advanced through the first round. Unfortunately, she was eliminated. She did, however, catch the eye of a JYP Entertainment scout and was accepted as a trainee. She joined the newly formed South Korean girl group Miss A in the month of March 2010.

Rising Popularity

Bae Suzy was appointed to the MBC Show! Music Core’s permanent host in October 2010 along with Minho and Onew, Jiyeon, of T-ara, and with members of the South Korean boy band SHINee. Later, she hosted various events like the Seoul Music Awards, Golden Disc Awards, and MNET 20’s Choice Awards, where she received an award for the “Hot New Star of 2011”.

Aside from her group activities, Bae Suzy dabbled in acting. She made her acting debut in Dream High, a music adolescent drama that aired on KBS from January 3 to February 28. She subsequently released an OST for the drama, “Winter Child”. The drama was well-received locally during its two-month run. The drama received great viewership and popularity in various countries. Bae Suzy received the Best Actress Award as well as the Best Couple Award with her co-star Kim Soo-hyun at the KBS Drama Awards.

She also appeared in the KBS TV reality show Invincible Youth 2. The first episode of the show began filming on October 19 and aired on November 11. The same year, Bae Suzy co-starred with Gong Yoo and Lee Min-jung in the KBS drama Big, written by the Hong sisters.

Bae Suzy was the first female celebrity from Korea to win the Singer Rookie Award, the Drama Rookie Award, the Film Rookie Award, and the Variety Rookie Award. For her acting in Architecture 101, she won the Best New Actress award at the 48th Baeksang Arts Awards. For her role in Invincible Youth 2, she won the Best Newcomer award in the Variety category at the KBS Entertainment Awards on December 22, 2012.

She co-starred with Lee Seung-gi in the historical fusion drama Gu Family Book in 2013. She won the Top Excellence award at the MBC Drama Awards and the Outstanding Actress award at the Seoul International Drama Awards for her acting. She also appeared on the variety show Healing Camp, becoming the show’s youngest guest. Bae Suzy was hired in May 2014 to play Jin Chae-seon, the country of Korea’s first female pansori singer, in the movie The Sound of a Flower (2015).

The struggle of a singer during the Joseon era who is prohibited from giving a public performance due to her gender is portrayed in the movie. Bae Suzy spent a year learning pansori in order to get ready for the part. She worked with Taiwanese singer-actor Show Lo that same year on the song “Together In Love,” which was included in his album Reality Show.

Solo debut and new agency

Bae Suzy released her first solo album during the start of 2017. On January 17, 2017 she released her pre-release single, “Pretend”, which immediately topped the music charts. After a week, on January 24, 2017, the lead single, “Yes, No, Maybe,” was released. “Don’t Wait for Your Love” is a duet that Bae Suzy and singer Park Won released in February 2017.

After that, she made her way back to television, co-starring with Lee Jong-suk in the 2017 September premiere of the fantasy thriller drama While You Were Sleeping. Following the disclosure of Min’s departure on December 27, JYP Entertainment revealed Miss A had been dissolved. Bae Suzy’s agreement with JYP Entertainment was renewed.

The pre-release track “In Love with Someone Else” which Bae Suzy released on January 22, received a real-time all-kill. The lead single from her second album, Faces of Love, was “Holiday”, and it was released on January 29. The music video for her b-side song, “Sober” was made public on February 14. The piano ensemble by Yiruma is featured in Bae’s fourth music video, which she dropped on March 9.

After her contract with JYP Entertainment expired on March 31, 2019, Bae Suzy left the company. She subsequently agreed to a contract with Management SOOP, an acting agency. After that, she appeared as a secret agent in the spy-action drama Vagabond and as Ha Jung-wife woo in the action movie Ashfall. Bae Suzy plays an aspiring entrepreneur in the 2020 South Korean drama Start-Up. She is portraying a young businesswoman who wants to establish a start-up in Korea like Steven Paul. On Netflix, the show Start-Up is available globally.

She made her singing comeback with the single “Satellite” on February 17, 2022, four years later. Three months later, she joined the second album project of singer Kang Seung-won, singing the ballad “Because I Love You” the fifth track, which is about shy love feelings. The following year, she stars in the Coupang Play television series Anna as Lee Anna/Lee Yu-mi, a character who takes on a new identity and lives a completely different life after inventing a small lie. The six-episode series’ viewers highly praised her acting abilities and portrayal of the emotions of the character Anna. The music video for Bae Suzy’s digital single “Cape” was made available on October 6.

Bae Suzy rose to prominence as one of South Korea’s most sought-after endorsers and is hailed as the “CF Queen” for her work on a variety of products, including cosmetics brands like Sugar.
