Synopsis

Mok Hae-won (Park Min-young) is an ordinary woman with a good character. She works as a cellist teacher in Seoul and her life experiences a sudden shift when false charges of child abuse are levelled against her by a mean parent of one of the students. After the series of unfortunate events, she was deeply affected and decided to temporarily return to her hometown, picturesque Bookhyun Village, in Gangwon Province, out in the countryside.

Hae-won becomes sick and tired of her life as the unfair situation affects her music teaching career. Being away from the rat race of Seoul city life, she hopes to find answers to the present uncertainty of her life.

Hae-won had been raised by her novelist aunt, Shim Myeong-yeo (Moon Jeong-hee), and she is surprised to see Hae-won arrive without notice. Shim Myeong-yeo prefers solitude and seems to be a mysterious person who constantly wears dark sunglasses. She is developing glaucoma, and she doesn’t want anyone, especially Hae-won, to know and pity her.

Hae-won has a lot of people in her hometown who remember her and she soon starts to socialise and reconcile, including a nice male civil servant named Lee Jang-woo (Lee Jae-wook). Later, she meets another former classmate, Im Eun-seob (Seo Kang-joon), who used to have a crush on her while they were both in high school.

Eun-seob also came back to Bookhyun village after leaving the village for a few years and now owns a countryside bookstore called Goodnight Bookstore. Even though the majority of his sales are online, he does encourage weekly get-togethers in his store for local people to gather and discuss the literature and poetry they’ve been reading recently.

Mok Hae-won and Im Eun-seob started to develop feelings for each other and her feelings for him got even deeper when she discovered that he had a pet name for her, Irene, while they were in high school. She had been his secret “dream girl”.

Soon, their relationship begins to develop into a love affair, despite some bumps along the way. Both slowly trust and heal each other. Eun-seob invited Hae-won to his bookstore for help, and this new close proximity helps their personal relationship flourish.

An Untold Childhood

Both of them faced a rough childhood. Eun-seob’s parents had left him in his childhood, and he had been adopted by a lovable couple in the village. He is blessed with a lovable foster mother, Yoon Yeo-jeong (Nam Gi-ae), and a foster father, Im Jong-pil (Kang Shin-il). They loved him abundantly as it is pretty rare for Koreans to adopt children. Eun-seob shares a special connection with his cute and charming sister, Im Hwi (Kim Hwan-hee).

The shocking news is revealed: Haw-won’s aunt had been forced to raise her because Hae-won’s mother, Shim Myeong-joo (Jin Hee-kyung), had been convicted of killing Hae-won’s father, Mok Joo-hong (Seo Tae-hwa). The reason behind the murder was violent abuse towards Shim Myeong-joo on multiple occasions. They never treat their daughter in a despicable way.

The abandonment even deeply hurt her when she became a topic of gossip in a clique of girls in her school and she found it heartbreaking when her best friend Kim Bo Young (Im Se-mi) told these girls that her mother had killed her father. This betrayal puts an end to their friendship and when they meet again in adulthood, Hae-won discovers that Bo-young has a crush on Eun-seob, whereas Eun-seob only has eyes for Hae-won.

Ending Explained

A big shock is revealed surrounding the events that resulted in the death of Hae-won’s father. She felt devastated and didn’t feel like dragging Eun-seob down with this new scandal affecting her life. Depressed Hae-won left Eun-seob and went back to Seoul, believing that time would numb the pain of her breakup with Eun-seob.

She tries to find a new teaching job to support herself. The longer she tries to move on, the more she misses him. It is the same for Eun-seob as well; he has published a book titled ‘Goodnight Irene’ and keeps expecting to see Hae-won in his bookstore. He started expressing his love for his adopted parents.

She receives a heartfelt letter from her mother about her aunt leaving town to go somewhere far away. As she travels to her town in the beautiful season of spring, Hae-won ends up going to Eun-seob and the two find happiness in that moment.

Theme

The drama explores the themes of love, healing and forgiveness. A story about finding happiness in life’s simple pleasures is worth everything. Eun-seob and Hae-won portray what it means to be forced to part, not because they don’t love each other but because the situation calls for it.

‘When the Weather Is Fine’ has a glimpse of the history of adoption in Korea. It’s pretty rare in Korea to adopt children who are not of their blood kin and family name. Here in the drama, the deep bonds that the family made with Eun-seob were even more meaningful and something unusual for an adopted kid.
