Biography of Park Min-young

Park Min-young is a versatile and elegant South Korean actress. She made her debut in a commercial for the SK Telecom group in 2005. Her appearance in the historical coming-of-age drama ‘Sungkyunkwan Scandal’ in 2010 made her rise to fame as an actress. After the moderate success of the sitcom ‘Unstoppable High Kick!’ in 2005 she also starred in the television series ‘City Hunter’ (2011), ‘Glory Jane’ (2011), ‘Dr. Jin’ (2012). Her lead role in the South Korean television series ‘What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim’ in 2018 received massive applause from far and wide.

Early Life and Education

She was born in Seoul, South Korea to a warm and traditional family. She grew up with parents and an elder sister who was a strong support for her dream of becoming an actress. She developed an interest in films and acting ever since she was a kid, and was an active performer in school skits and plays and that interest drove her for the rest of her teenage years.

A life-changing event happened when Min-young was 14 years old when she went to Pennsylvania with her elder sister as an exchange student. She was determined to seek positivity in every situation and she took it as an opportunity to learn and grow as a person. After 3 years, she came back to Korea for further studies and graduated from Dongguk University in Seoul in 2013 majoring in theatre and film. During her graduation, she was already busy as a model with an alive dream of becoming a South Korean actress.

Park Min-young has an undeniable influence in the entertainment industry. She started her career by doing a commercial for SK Telecom group in 2005. A year later, she acted in the sitcom ‘High Kick’. After the moderate success of the sitcom, she continued to act in other Korean dramas and television series. She appeared in supporting roles in the television series ‘I Am Sam’ in 2007 and the horror-themed drama ‘Hometown of Legends’ in 2008. Later in the same year, her presence in BigBang’s hit song Haru Haru was a surprise to her fans. In 2009, she starred as a villainous princess in the period drama ‘Ja Myung Go‘. 

2010–2011: Breakthrough

Even though she was a famous TV actress by then, she got a defining role in 2010 through the historical drama ‘Sungkyunkwan Scandal’. The drama was a commercial and critical success with three KBS drama awards. She played the role of a girl caught between two marathon runners in the heartwarming youth drama ‘Running, Gu’ in 2010.

Along with the lead protagonist role in the South Korean television drama ‘City Hunter’ in 2011, she also grabbed major advertising endorsements and made her big screen debut in the horror film ‘The Cat’ and the drama series ‘Glory Jane’.

2012–Present: Leading Roles

In 2012, she got to act in a double role in a drama ‘Dr. Jin’, based on a comic novel originating from Japan. This manga adaptation focuses on time travel. After she signed with the new management agency Culture Depot in November 2013.

2014 turned out to be a great year in her career as she starred in two back-to-back hit South Korean dramas. First, in the legal drama ‘A New Leaf’ as an idealistic intern and then as a tabloid reporter in the series ‘Healer’ gave her the Excellence Award.

Following her next lawyer role in 2015 in the SBS Korean drama ‘Remember’ she took several leading roles in the following years. Some of her notable projects of 2017 are the historical drama ‘Queen for Seven Days’ and Netflix’s variety television program ‘Busted!’. In the same year, she appeared in a historical and political melodrama ‘Queen for Seven Days’ along with Yeon Woo-jin and Lee Dong-gun.

The actress had another major role in 2018. The romantic comedy-drama ‘What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim‘ (2018) was topped in ratings and took Park Min-young to the limelight. In 2019, she starred in the role of chief manager of the Cheum Museum of Art, in the television series ‘Her Private Life’.

She was the lead cast in the 2020 JTBC romance drama ‘When the Weather Is Fine’. Her recent work is with Song Kang in a cheerful love story ‘Forecasting Love and Weather’.
