‘Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938’ is the second season of ‘Tale of the Nine Tailed‘. The main roles in this season are acted by Lee Dong-wook, Kim So-yeon, Kim Bum, Ryu Kyung-soo and Woo Hyun-jin. In this season Yeon is taken to 1938, the period in which Japan oppresses Korea.
Yeon comes to this era with the intention of finding the anonymous man behind the red mask who robbed the magical ‘Samdocheon Guardian Stone’ which belongs in the current world. Yeon meets his half-blood younger brother Lee Rang, whom he lost in the 1st season. The drama contains humour, romance and action with unexpected twists and turns and a good deal of mythical characters. The K-drama directed by Kang Shin-hyo and Jo Nam-hyung is streamed from 6 May to 11 June 2023.

Synopsis
‘Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938’ is the continuation of ‘Tale of the Nine Tailed’ released in 2020. In the ‘Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938’, Lee Yeon, the guardian of Baekdudaegan goes back to 1938 due to the unexpected theft of ‘Samdocheon Guardian Stone’ by a red masked man. The stone is a valuable magical thing, which holds the power to bring back the dead to life.
As per the instructions of Taluipa, Yeon and Koo Shin-joo enter the year 1938 through a magical door in Taluipa’s residence. Their duty is to bring back the stone within a given time or else they will get stuck in 1938.
The duo jump into history without knowing the astonishing and adventurous things, which await them. They drop into the time when the Japanese army dominates over Korea and the Korean patriotic people are scheming to bomb, the Japanese Governor-General Ryuhei Kato.
Yeon meets his half-brother Lee Rang who traded his soul in the 1st season for Yeon. In 1938, Lee Rang is a leader of a bandit gang and an avid smoker. Though Rang is rude to his older brother, his absence in the current world makes Yeon to uncage all his love towards Rang. Therefore, they get along with each other to the very end.
Yeon meets his childhood friend Ryu Hong-joo, the western mountain God who is presently the owner of Myoyeongak. Hong-joo desperately wished to become the bride of Yeon and make him and Rang stay in the Myoyeongak. Later, the three of them search for the red-masked man.
The mysterious man who they search for is Yeon’s childhood friend, Cheon Moo-young, the former mountain God of the north. Before Yeon gives up his duty as a mountain God, he killed the older brother of Ryu Hong-joo who gets possessed by an evil spirit.
The evil spirit still communicates with Cheon Moo-young through a magical mirror. Moo-young steals the stone as per the instruction of the evil spirit to bring back his brother through a ritual using the stone and the magical golden ruler. To prevent the reincarnation of the evil mountain god, magical things like the ruler and the stone is stored and safeguarded in different ears.
Hiding his true intention, Cheon Moo-young visits Yeon and Ryu Hong-joo and stays with them in Myoyeongak. However, Yeon finds out Cheon Moo-young to rob the golden ruler and the stone to bring back his brother and make sure that the stone is out of his reach.
The purpose of Yeon and Shin-joo visiting 1938 mixes up with the Korean independence movement. Yeon meets the greedy Japanese Governor-General, Ryuhei Kato, who really is an evil spirit in Japanese myths.
Ryuhei Kato is also in need of the golden ruler which belongs to the 1938 era.
Rang meets a half-blood mermaid and falls in love with her. Yeon becomes happy for Rang when he finds a girlfriend because after completing the purpose of his coming, Yeon leaves to present world, to his lover Ji-ah leaving Rang behind.
The Japanese Governor-General fixes his marriage with Sunwoo Eun-ho. On the wedding day, the fight between the Japanese evil spirit and Yeon’s group turns into chaos. The mermaid gets badly injured and in the effort to save his beloved, Rang conquers the full power of the nine-tailed fox hidden within him. To help Rang in the deadly fight, Yeon who is destined to live in that era comes to his aid.
On the other hand, Yeon from the present world kills the Japanese Governor-General. Finally, Yeon and Koo Shin-joo are able to take back the stone to the present world, within the allowed time. However, the mess caused by Cheon Moo-young by stealing the stone is still not attended. Hoping the reincarnation of his brother, Moo-young bring back the evil spirit again into the face of the earth.
By blinding an eye of Taluipa, the evil spirit starts his venture to fulfil his dreams and revenge.
Theme
The ‘Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938’ is a mixture of events from the present and past. Yeon from the present drives back to 1938 to recover the stolen magical stone. However, Yeon gets involved in friendship and family issues when he reaches back. To add to the complicity, the agitated atmosphere of Korea in 1938 under the supremacy of Japan induce fantasy and horror.
The K-drama has a strong sense of brotherhood and friendship. When Yeon’s gang gets into a bloody fight with the Japanese police, the loyalty of each character is tested. Being loyal to one another, the main characters try every possible way to save the other one.
Once again Rang’s love for his brother is expressed in his effort to tie his brother to a thread when he leaves for the fake realm created to fight the Japanese evil spirit. Furthermore, his meeting with the half-blood mermaid presents heartwarming elements of romance in this K-drama.
