Biography of Kim Sang-bum

Kim Sang-bum is a South Korean actor, model, dancer and singer under King Kong by Starship Ent. He is best known for his role in the television series, ‘Boys Over Flowers’, ‘Padam Padam’, ‘Mrs. Cop 2’, ‘Tale of the Nine Tailed’, ‘Law School’ and ‘Ghost Doctor’.

Early Life and Education

Kim Sang-bum, popularly known as Kim Bum, was born on 7 July 1989 in Seoul, South Korea. Kim Bum, who is alternatively known as Kim-beom, was born to Jerry and Min-ho Bum as the eldest of their three children. For a while, he also lived with his family in Australia.Kim Sang-bum was the captain of the soccer team and played as a striker during his school days. His mother supported him to excel in sports, whereas his father stressed him to focus on his studies. Being influenced by cousin Jini, Kim Sang-bum aspired to be a South Korean singer.

After finishing school education, Kim Sang-bum wanted to become an actor. In order to fulfil his dream, he enrolled in Cung-ang University and majored in Film and Theatre. Kim Bum participated in university cultural programmes during his college days. Although Kim Bum took part in the ‘Survival Star Audition’ and attained 8th position out of over 100 participants, he could not complete the competition as he was underage. Even so, the audition exposure earned him extensive knowledge about the entertainment industry and rich contacts in show business.

Career

Kim Bum started his acting career in television dramas after being caught by the producers. His debut role came with the 2006 South Korean television drama, ‘Rude Women’, in a supporting role as Jeong Hyeon-jun, directed by Lee Seung-ryul. Same year Kim Bum appeared in a situation comedy, ‘High Kick!’, in the main role as the friend of Lee Min-ho, a role played by actor Kim Hye-seong.
Two years after his acting debut, Kim Bum made his first big screen appearance in the 2008 South Korean romantic comedy film, ‘Hellcats’ by Kwon Chil-in, in the lead role of Lee Ho-jae. Kim Bum, with his scene-stealing role in a 2008 South Korean television series, ‘East of Eden’, gained first recognition after winning the ‘Netizen Popularity Award’ in 2008.

Although the stunning actor Kim Bum was seen in a few dramas and films, his breakthrough role came in the popular drama series, ‘Boys Over Flowers’, as So Yi-jung in 2009. Actors, including Koo Hye-sun, Lee Min-ho, Kim Hyun-joong, Kim Joon, and Kim So-eun were his co-stars in the series, which was directed by Jeon Ki-sang.

Kim Bum achieved further acknowledgement for his supporting role in a 2011 South Korean television series, ‘Padam Padam’ by Noh Hee-kyung, starring Jung Woo-sung and Han Ji-min in prominent roles. He had to do intense training for his particular role resulting in drastic weight loss, which led him to suffer from degenerative arthritis.

The multi-talented Kim Bum revealed his efficiency in singing by releasing a studio album, ‘Hometown’ on 20 June 2012. The actor-cum singer also performed his first solo concert, ‘Kim Beom Japan Live’ at the Stellar Ball in Tokyo in the same year.

In 2013, Kim Bum was one of the lead casts in a South Korean romantic melodrama television series, ‘That Winter, the Wind Blows’, co-starring Jo In-sung and Song Hye-kyo.

Kim Bum debuted in Chinese films in 2013, appearing in the Chinese action adventure fantasy mystery film, ‘Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon’, by Tsui Hark. In the same year, he played a role in the historical drama, ‘Goddess of Fire’, starring Moon Geun-young, Han Go-eun, Lee Sang-yoon, Seo Hyun-jin, Jun Kwang-ryul, Park Gun-hyung, Jeong Bo-seok, Byun Hee-bong and Lee Kwang-soo. Kim Bum appeared in his second Chinese drama, ‘V Love’ in 2014. Subsequently, the stunning actor acted in two more Chinese films; a romantic comedy film, ‘Lovers and Movies’ by Niu Chaoyang and a suspense romance film, ‘The Beloved’ by Cao Dawei.

In 2015, Kim Bum returned to the small screen with the South Korean television series, ‘Hidden Identity’, starring alongside Park Sung-woong, Yoon So-yi and Lee Won-jong. The popularity of the actor scaled up after playing a villain role in the 2016 South Korean television crime series, ‘Mrs. Cop 2’.

Marking Kim Bum’s return to South Korean films, he appeared in an action-adventure comedy film, ‘Detective K: Secret of the Living Dead’ by Kim Sok-yun, co-starring Kim Myung-min, Oh Dal-su and Kim Ji-won in the lead roles in 2018.

After two years, he was seen in a South Korean television fantasy drama, ‘Tale of the Nine Tailed’, starring alongside Lee Dong-wook and Jo Bo-ah. In 2021, Kim Bum played a lead role in the South Korean television series, ‘Law School’, starring Kim Myung-min, Ryu Hye-young, and Lee Jung-eun in the lead roles.

He then starred in a 2022 South Korean television series, ‘Ghost Doctor’ by Boo Seong-cheol, co-starring Rain, Uee, and Son Na-eun in the lead roles.

As of 2023, the South Korean television series, ‘Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938’, co-starring Lee Dong-wook, Kim So-yeon and Ryu Kyung-soo in the lead roles is the latest and ongoing project of Kim Bum.

South Korean actor Kim Sang-bum, who has more than two decades of career experience, also earned a lot of recognition for his acting. Some of his notable achievements are

Military Life

Kim Sang-bum enlisted in the military in April 2018. Kim Bum did his mandatory military service as a public service worker due to some health issues. Additionally, the actor put his effort into basic training prior to his service. On 13 March 2020, King Kong by Starship announced that Kim Sang-Bum completed his mandatory service.

Personal Life

One of the busiest actors in South Korea, Kim Sang-bum, was dating Moon Geun-young, who was his co-star in ‘Goddess of Fire’ in November 2013. According to media reports, they ended their 7-month-long relationship on 15 May 2014. Later, both their agencies confirmed that they decided to remain good friends.
Reportedly, Kim Sang-bum was in a relationship with actor Oh Yeon-seo on 29 March 2018. However, they separated after a few months of dating.
