Synopsis

Lee Sang-woo is driving his car through a snow-covered landscape. In the front seat of his car lies a wooden box, which he often looks at and smiles affectionately at. In front of his car, there is a woman and her daughter in a van. The child waves at him happily, and he returns the greeting. Suddenly, their van skips from the road to avoid an accident.

In the flashback, a man and his child are playing in the snow. The next scene shows a woman deboarding a bus and hurrying to a restaurant where her boyfriend waits. However, while they eat, her boyfriend says he does not wish to continue with the relationship. His words make her upset, and she leaves the restaurant after swallowing a few tables that she carries in her pocket.

The next scene shows an aquarium in which a man swims wearing a swimming suit. He works in the aquarium and loves animals.

In the evening, he is sitting on a bench and eating his noodles. Hearing someone crying, he looks around and sees Sun-mi crying on the next bench, drunk. Near her is a music box playing a melody. Sun-mi gets irritated by seeing Lee Sang-woo notice her. Watching her disgust, he explains that he is only listening to the melody. Blocking further conversation, she walks and sits near the brink of the river.

Sitting there, she thinks about the day her father died and murmurs that she is afraid of what will happen in the future. When she stands up, she trembles. Before falling into the water, Lee Sang-woo catches her. However, she pushes him away, making him fall into the water.

Sun-mi works as a perfumer, and she has in-depth knowledge of a variety of scents. In between her work, she goes to see her doctor, who is also her father’s friend. The doctor tells her not to catch the flu since she has a low blood count. After gifting a scent pouch and a plant, she leaves the doctor’s cabin.

Outside, she sees a father and a daughter, which makes her think about her father again. She reaches for her bag to take her music box, which was gifted by her father, and instantly notices that she lost it somewhere.

Lee Sang-woo, after finishing his swimming practice late at night, gets into his car to go home. He sees the music box, which he has taken from the bench on which Sun-mi sat last night, lying on the seat. Inspecting the box, he gets the address of Sun-mi’s workplace. He reaches her perfume laboratory and knocks on a window. Luckily, Sun-mi has not left home. As an act of showing gratitude, she invites him to eat dinner.

Lee Saang-woo notices the bruises on Sun-mi’s palms, and he applies his athletic ointment to her hand. Touching his hands gives Sun-mi the nostalgic feeling of touching her father’s hand. They said bye, agreeing they would meet in the near future.

The next day, Sun-mi drives to meet Lee Saang-woo, where he practices swimming. While talking with him, she talks about her deceased father and the music box. Soon, they fall for each other and start dating.

One evening, Sun-mi invites Lee Saang-woo to her home. There he finds her medical card stating her myelodysplastic syndrome. Soon he finds her bleeding through her nose and mouth, and he carries her on his back to the hospital. From the doctor, he learns that she has been diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of 10. Also, her father died for the same reason.

Though the unappealing news makes him sad, he decides to stand by Sun-mi’s side. Saang-woo changes Sun-mi’s old door locks before she reaches home. He started to give more care to her, and finally, they decided to marry.

After their marriage, Sun-mi’s condition gets worse, and she becomes hospitalised. Sang-woo’s presence gives her the courage to undergo the treatments. One day, Sang-woo takes her to the place that she once visited with her father. Later, he takes her back to the hospital for her treatment.

One day, while driving with his friend, Sang-woo sees a shop that sells different types of wooden accessories.

Later, the movie comes back to the first scene, where Sang-woo is driving his car after buying a wooden box as a gift for Sun-mi. In the blink of an eye, his car crashes into the opposite vehicle, causing Sang-woo’s death.

At the hospital, Sun-mi, after completing her treatment successfully, receives the dead body of Sang-woo.

The movie ends by showing Sun-mi reading the letter that Sang-woo kept in the wooden box with her wedding ring.
