Biography of Seyong

Kim Se-yong widely known as Seyong is a South Korean singer, rapper, and actor. He signed with H2 Media and made his debut with idol quintet MYNAME on 27 October 2011 with their digital single ‘ Message’. The band is comprised of five members Gunwoo, Insoo, Seyong, Jun.Q and Chaejin.

Seyong made his acting career two years prior by appearing on the television series Green Coach. His solo artistry was with the release of his first mini-album ‘Connection’ independent from MYNAME in 2019.

Early Life and Education

Seyong was born on 20 November 1991 in Busan. He has an older sister.  In middle school, he was a trainee for JYP Entertainment for three years. When he was young, he aspired to be a soccer player.

Career

Seyong’s photo was uploaded to an Ulzzang website by his friend and received an offer to be a trainee under JYP Entertainment. An agent from the agency convinced his parents and Seyong accepted the proposal and he had to stop playing the sport.

He also wanted to pursue acting and joined at Seoul Institute of the Arts with a major in theater and film. For three years, he was a trainee under the label and decided to prioritise acting and left the agency. After seeing the performance of 2PM, he was motivated to be a singer again.

Before making his debut as a recording artist, he appeared on the small screen on Seoul Broadcasting System’s (SBS) 2009 television series ‘Green Coach’. He was a cast member of the KBS2’s drama ‘Believe in Love’ as Lee Seong-min. He played the role of a member of a fictional idol group. He was the backup dancer for Hwanhee during performances of the single ‘Love Pain’. He was featured on the album track ‘I Love You I Love You’.

In 2011, he debuted as a rapper in the idol group MYNAME. He had the most extensive training for a period of five years and nine months among his bandmates. On 28 October 2011, the group released its debut single ‘Message’.

He co-wrote several MYNAME songs like ‘We Are The Night’ (co-lyrics), ‘U-Turn’ (co-lyrics), ‘Hocus Pocus’ (co-lyrics), ‘Your Answer’ (co-lyrics), ‘Broken Watch’ (co-lyrics), ‘Reason’ (co-lyrics). The group also released a Japanese-language version of the single which became the introductory single in the country. At the beginning of 2015, MYNAME’s promotional activities ceased in South Korea.

Seyong participated in the 2016 dance competition television series ‘Hit the Stage’. He was a cast member in ‘Power Rangers Dino Force Brave’ where he played Kwon Ju-yong, the Brave Red Dino. Along with bandmates JunQ, Chaejin, and Gunwoo, he competed in the survival competition program ‘The Unit: Idol Rebooting Project’. It was their first domestic promotional activity in two years. The participants competed to become a member of the all-male unit UNB.

Seyong made it to the final round but failed to make it to the upper tier. On 10 May 2019, he released his first solo mini-album ‘Connection’ in Japan. The album peaked at number 41 on the national Oricon Albums Chart. He acted in the musical ‘Oh, Mr. Park!’ in 2019 as Hwang Tae-kyeong. In 2019, his contract with H2 Media expired and he decided to leave the agency. In 2020, in episode 3 of the drama ‘Backstreet Rookie’, he had a cameo appearance.
