Synopsis

Chun Ji-woong is a 26-year-old unemployed man who wastes days and nights wandering with his friends. He lives in a rented room on the second floor of a house. One day Ji-woong wakes up to see Gu Hong-sil, the girl who lives in the neighbourhood, standing in front of him. Like Ji-woong, Hong-sil lives in a rented room on the second floor of a house, right next to his room. For the first time, she meets him and asks permission to collect the scattered beer bottles around him.

Just waking up from his sleep, Ji-woong nods his head and asks her the purpose behind such an action. She tells him she will sell it and save the penny earned in her bank account. Also, she tells him that collecting empty bear bottles for 365 days in a year earns her a good amount of money at the end of that year.

Hong-sil is a miser who lives to increase the amount in her bank account. She collects sellable things from abandoned houses and sells them in the market for money. Furthermore, she cheats the local shopowners by selling fake autographs of celebrities.

One day she learns that the residents in her area will soon be evacuated to proceed with the government’s developmental programme. To compensate the resident’s loss, the authority will transfer a specific amount to their bank accounts. She decides to apply for the compensation money not once but twice. To create records for the second recipient, she makes a deal with Ji-woong’s house owner by paying his rent. Later, she makes a contract in the name of her father and earns the compensation money two times.

Ji-woong’s house owner throws him out and accommodates a new tenant. At night, Hong-sil sees a homeless Ji-woong suffering in the cold. Seeing his pathetic condition, she goes to see him again to make another deal. She invites him to her place and gives him a tent to stay in. She asks him to stand with her for the next two months.

As part of her plan, Ji-woong should open a new bank account. However, Hong-sil opens the bank account in her name and tells him to save every penny he makes in the next two months in the bank account. After two months, she will give him a fixed amount. He agrees, and they start to work together. Slowly, Hong-sil’s influences on Ji-woong cause him to reflect on his actions, and he starts to save every penny.

He starts cutting out the number of times he goes out with friends to save money. However, he could not resist spending his savings on the day his crush stayed a bit longer with him and showed interest in visiting his apartment. He takes her to his friend’s apartment, pretending that he owns it, but his plans get crushed down when his friend’s mother shows up.

He meets Hong-sil when he reaches back to the tent. She asks him to show the bank passbook and notices the amount has not been reached as she expected. When she asked about the money, he lied to her, and in that argument, they decide to separate and withdraw their contract. The next day they go to the bank to withdraw the accounts, but they forget about the plan to separate when they see a blood-selling centre.

Reaching back to their shelter, Ji-woong suggests her to spend some money for herself. She decides to enjoy her life and called the fund manager, showing him an interest in going to a concert. However, for the concert, he comes with his girlfriend. Hong-sil becomes sad and goes back to her house. Seeing her sad, Ji-woong tries to cheer her up.

One day, she takes him to a tree where she scattered the ashes of her dead mother. Sitting under the tree, she tells him about her life story. In between the talks, they see some people taking an estimate of the land. From them, they learned the land would be sold soon. Therefore, Ji-woong encouraged Hong-sil to buy the land.

Ji-woong and Hong-sil withdraw some money and sign the contract. However, their plan goes wrong when the fund manager escapes with the money. Furthermore, Ji-woong and Hong-sil learn about the cheating that they did to each other. Ji-wong leaves her place.

By that time, both Ji-woong and Hong-sil start to have feelings for each other. To buy the tree for her, he withdraws the rest of the money from the account. The next day, Hong-sil wakes up and sees Ji-woong’s tent beside her new house. She scolds him and asks him to find a new place to stay. Ji-woong, with a smirk on his face, asks her to turn around to see the tree. The movie ends by showing Hong-sil and Ji-woong confessing their feelings.
