Synopsis
Min-soo is an office employee who has great expectations from his future family. He lives with his pet dog, Rooney. He has a girlfriend whom he has been dating for 3 years and is planning to marry soon. The day he proposes to Seong-gyeong, she reveals that she is genetically allergic to dogs and has been taking pills whenever she meets Rooney.
Min-soo becomes sad for making his girlfriend rely on pills. He asks for help from his cousin and also his best friend Jin-guk. Jin-guk is an influencer and he agreed to find a caretaker for Rooney through Instagram. Since he is bankrupt from his previous coffee business, he needs money to pay the debt. Therefore, he asks to pay him when they get a pet-loving person to adopt Rooney. Together, they go meet each candidate, one by one, who shows interest in adopting Rooney.
The third person they meet is a depressed schoolboy who recently lost his pet dog. Min-soo quickly connects with him. Rooney looks similar to that of the boy’s pet dog, and Min-soo locks horns with the boy when he addresses Rooney as his pet.
Min-soo has strong and deep intimacy and emotions for Rooney because he played a major role in his life to get over the death of his mother. To find the perfect family for Rooney, Jin-guk takes him to his uncle. His uncle is a kind man, and he has a Labrador Retriever. However, before he asks his uncle the favour, the uncle requests him to take care of his pet dog since he soon leaves to visit his pregnant daughter. In return for his favour, he agrees to free him from his debt.
Jin-guk and Min-soo come home with two dogs to take care of. While scrolling through Instagram, Jin-guk gets a suggestion about a pet lover called Ah-min. She lives far away. Therefore, the duo start their journey to meet her.
On their way, Min-soo pulls over their car to fetch his phone, which falls on the road. The dogs start barking looking at an abandoned carton box containing four cute puppies and looking at their poor faces, they decide to take them along. In between their journey, they halt at an inn. In the morning, Min-soo hears the inn owner threatening the dog, and he rescues the poor dog from him.
On their way, they stop in front of an adoption centre to leave the puppies collected on the way. However, they somehow end up adopting a new puppy from there.
Finally, they make it to the place where Ah-min lives.
In a coffee shop, they meet the manager of Ah-min and head towards to see her. Ah-min is a beautiful young girl living in a big mansion with a large courtyard. She is partially immobile due to her bad health.
She assures them to take care of all of the dogs that they brought, but she will never consider any of her adopted dogs as part of her family. The words that she said to Min-soo make him rethink, and the duo, together with all their dogs, travel back to their home.
On their way home, they stop at an inn, and everything changes that night. Jin-guk makes up his mind to open a coffee cafe and adopts Rooney along with the other dogs. On the other hand, Min-soo agrees to invest in the coffee machine and to do a part-time job at his cafe without pay.
After reaching home without Rooney, Min-soo finds the house empty. The next day, early in the morning, he goes to his spacious family house and cleans it. Then, he calls his girlfriend and asks her to live in the house with Rooney as a family. Touched by the intimacy of Min-soo, she agrees happily.
Theme
‘My Heart Puppy’ discusses the importance of family and close companions. It is a movie that a dog lover can easily connect with. Min-soo and Jin-guk are running for a suitable owner for Rooney. They need someone who will look after their pet as their own family.
It took a long trip for Min-soo to realise that Rooney’s only family is Min-soo. To help Min-soo marry his dog-allergic girlfriend, Jin-guk agrees to adopt Rooney. When Jin-guk plays with the puppies, Rooney sits aside without joining the company and it takes Min-soo to make him cheer up at the end. The bromance of Min-soo and Jin-guk is another theme to discuss as they are trusted companions of one another.
