Biography of Lisa

Lalisa Manobal, also known by her stage name Lisa, is a Thai rapper and singer, who currently resides in South Korea. She is a member of ‘Blackpink’, a ‘YG Entertainment’ owned South Korean girl group. The single album ‘Lalisa’, released in September 2021, was Lisa’s solo debut.

She has five ‘Guinness World Records to her name, a ‘Mnet Asian Music Award’, a ‘Gaon Chart Music Award’, the first ‘MTV Video Music Award’ and the ‘MTV Europe Music Award’, ever won by a K-pop soloist. She is one of the most well-known K-pop idols in the world and has a large fan following on Instagram.

Early Life & Education

Her birthname is Pranpriya Manobal, but she officially changed it to Lalisa. She was born on 27 March 1997 in Buriram, Thailand. She is Thai by both ethnicity and nationality. Although her original parents’ names have not been made public, her stepfather is Marco Bruschweiler, a Swiss-born and well-known chef who lives and works in Thailand.

When she was just 13 years old, Lisa was a member of the dance group ‘We Zaa Cool’, which performed concerts in her own country before she had a successful audition for ‘YG Entertainment’ in 2010. She accepted Yang Hyunsuk’s offer to train her for YG Entertainment after winning the audition and being given first-place honours. To begin her professional training in performing for her K-pop Idol career, she relocated to South Korea in 2011.

Career & Achievements

In 2016, she adopted the stage name Lisa and joined the K-pop girl group ‘Blackpink’, which made its debut on August 8. She is the lead dancer, lead rapper, backing vocalist, and youngest member known as a ‘maknae’ in the band.

With the main tracks ‘Whistle’ and ‘Boombayah,’ Blackpink made their recording debut with the album ‘Square One’. ‘Whistle’ reached the top of all South Korean charts immediately upon its release.

As of September 2022, the group has released three full-length albums, ‘Blackpink in Your Area,’ ‘The Album,’ and ‘Born Pink,’ as well as three EPs, ‘Blackpink,’ ‘Square Up,’ and ‘Kill This Love,’ and two single albums, ‘Square One’ and ‘Square Two’.

She became a permanent member of the MBC military variety program ‘Real Man 300’ as part of the Korea Army Academy edition in September 2018. On 5 November 2018, she launched her YouTube channel, ‘Lilifilm Official,’ which focuses on travel, lifestyle, and dance performances. By July 2019, she had gained over 1.3 million subscribers and received a ‘YouTube Gold Play Button’. One of her dance performance videos went viral in 2020 as a meme where screen captures her legs placed onto a character or public figure’s torso, with the caption ‘Did it work?’. Celebrities such as Dolly Parton, Stephen Colbert, James Corden, Luke Evans, and Lil Nas X also participated in the meme by posting photos of themselves with Lisa’s legs.

As a dance mentor, she participated in ‘iQIYI’s Chinese girl group survival program ‘Youth With You Season 2’ in March 2020 and returned for the Chinese boy group survival show ‘Youth With You Season 3’ in February 2021.

In April 2021, ‘YG Entertainment’ announced to the South Korean outlet ‘The Korea Herald’ that she would debut as a solo artist with her group, with official schedules to be announced later. In July 2021, her record label confirmed that filming for her music video had begun.

Lisa’s debut single album ‘Lalisa’ and its lead single of the same name were released on 10  September 2021. The music video set a record for most views by a solo artist in 24 hours with 73.6 million views. The song debuted at number 84 on the ‘US Billboard Hot 100’ and at number two on the ‘Billboard Global 200’. The album sold 736,221 copies in Korea in the first week, setting a record for the highest first-week sales among all female artists. The B-side track ‘Money’ was sent as the album’s second single and peaked at number 90 on the ‘Billboard Hot 100’ and at number ten on the ‘Billboard Global 200’.

In October 2021, Lisa announced her collaboration with the renowned musicians DJ Snake, Ozuna, and Megan Thee Stallion with a teaser of the song ‘SG’. The song was released in the same year with the music video and credits for Lisa for songwriting and composing. The collaboration debuted at number 19 on the ‘Billboard Global 200’ and at number two on the ‘US Bubbling Under Hot 100’ chart and also became her first number-one song on the ‘Latin Airplay’ chart.

She earned three more ‘Guinness Record titles as a solo artist in 2022. Her recent ‘Guinness World Records include being the ‘First Solo K-pop Artist to Win at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards’ (VMAs) in the ‘Best K-pop Video category’ and the ‘First Solo K-pop Winner at the 2022 MTV Europe Music Awards’ (EMAs) in ‘Best K-Pop’ category.

Additionally, at the 2022 ‘EMAs’, ‘BLACKPINK’ won the award for ‘Best Metaverse Performance’ with the song ‘Ready for Love’, earning them a ‘Guinness World Record title as the ‘First Group to win in ‘Best Metaverse Performance’ category.

Her other record is ‘For Having The Most Instagram Followers of Any K-pop Artist’. According to recent reports, Lisa had 87.5 million followers on Instagram. This makes her Instagram account the 38th most-followed on the platform.
