Biography of Dawn

Kim Hyo-jong, known as Dawn, is a South Korean rapper, singer, and songwriter. He was formerly known as E’Dawn. He is one of the best-known former rappers and songwriters of the South Korean boy band Pentagon.

Before he departed from Cube Entertainment in 2018, he released nine EPs in both Korean and Japanese. He made his debut on 5 November 2019 with the single ‘Money’.

Early Life and Education

Kim Hyo-jong was born on 1 June 1994, in Hwasun, South Korea. Much about his education is not known to the public.

Career

Dawn embarked on his professional journey on 10 July 2016 under the name E’Dawn. He debuted with the group Pentagon under Cube Entertainment as a dancer and rapper. The group was formed through the variety show Pentagon Maker.

After being eliminated from the programme, he got into the group’s final lineup with Yan An and Shinwon. He is a versatile songwriter who wrote lyrics and composed the tracks of his debut EP, ‘Pentagon’, ‘Lukewarm’ and ‘Organic Song’. The group debuted on 1 May 2017, with the EP ‘199X’.

He debuted in a new group called Triple H with bandmates Hui and Hyuna. The trio starred in the new show called Triple H Fun Agency. The album ranked number four on the Gaon Albums Chart and tenth on the Billboard World Albums Chart. In 2018, the group released a follow-up EP, ‘Retro Futurism’, contributing lyrics and music for the lead single ‘Retro Future’. 

After confirming his relationship with Hyuna in 2018, Cube Entertainment terminated the contracts of Dawn and Hyuna. On 14 November 2018, his official departure was confirmed by Cube and Pentagon.

Dawn and Hyuna signed contracts with the new label P Nation, and the news was officially announced by Psy. He debuted as a solo artist under the name ‘Dawn’ with the single ‘Money’.

On 29 April 2020, he appeared on the Late Night E-News show with the song ‘It’s You’ from the ‘OLD X NEW’ album. He made his powerful comeback with his first EP ‘Dawndididawn’ released on 9 October 2020. The title track also featured fellow P Nation artist Jessi.

He was a part of Demian’s new song ‘LOVE%’. He collaborated with Hyuna and released their duet EP ‘1+1=1’. In 2022 along with Hyuna, he attended the J-Rim Super Nova Festival. On 16 June 2022, he released the digital single ‘Stupid Cool’.

On 29 August 2022, P Nations announced Dawn decided not to renew his contract and signed a new contract with the hip-hop label, At Area on 30 January 2023. On 15 September 2023, he released his EP ‘Narcissus’, with two lead singles ‘Star’ and ‘Heart’.
