Biography of Baekhyun

Byun Baek-hyun or Baekhyun is a South Korean singer, actor, and songwriter. He started his career under SM Entertainment in 2011. He debuted in 2012 as a member of the South Korean-Chinese boy group ‘EXO’. He is not only one of the most popular singers, but he has also established his career in acting as well.

Early Life and Education

Baekhyun was born on May 6, 1992, in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province. He began his career at a very young age. He started his musical career as a singer when he was just 11 years old. His inspiration was South Korean singer, Jung Ji-hoon, who is known by his stage name Rain among his fans and followers. He is a former student at Jungwon High School in Bucheon. He was also a member of the school’s famous band ‘Honsusangtae’.

In 2011, he was selected by SM Entertainment for their new boy group ‘EXO’. He joined the group in the end as the ninth member on January 30, 2012. He is the lead singer of the band. He appeared in the music video ‘What Is Love’ which he sang with his bandmate D.O.

Career

Baekhyun began his career as a member of ‘EXO’ in 2012. He released his solo song ‘Beautiful’ in 2015 which became a massive success in the Korean music industry. It topped the charts not only in Korea, but it was a successful hit in China as well. Apart from the beginning of his musical career, he was about to act in an action film titled, ‘Dokgo’ with Yeo Jin-goo, but this plan was canceled under unknown circumstances.

Baekhyun concentrated both on his acting and musical career ever since 2016. It was in October 2016, that he became a member of ‘EXO’s’ first official sub unit Exo-CBX. ‘Hey Mama’ was their debut play and it was released on October 31, 2016. He also acted in famous dramas such as ‘Exo Next Door’ and ‘Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo’.

Baekhyun and Soyou, the member of Sistar, released their duet titled ‘Rain’ in February 2017. The song became a hit and secured number-one position on every South Korean online music chart which is known as ‘all-kill’. This made Baekhyun the first SM Entertainment artist to achieve ‘all-kill’ in both 2016 and 2017 for his works, ‘Dream’ and ‘Rain’ respectively.

He released his third solo EP ‘City Lights’ in July 2019. The album sold over 550,000 copies in 2019, which broke the record for the best selling album by a solo artist in the history of South Korea’s Gaon Music Awards. The album’s lead single, ‘UN Village’ was also a hit in the industry. Both these hits increased the fame of Baekhyun to greater heights. He gained several awards for these albums.

Some of his other notable works include, ‘MY Love’, ‘On the Road’, ‘Dr Romantic 2’ and ‘Hyena’. Baekhyun released his second ‘EP Delight’ in which he featured the lead single ‘Candy’. This had almost 732,000 pre-orders which gained the record of the most pre-ordered album by a solo performer in the history of South Korean Music Industry. After the release, ‘Delight’ sold more than 100,00,000 copies. The previous record was held by Kim Gun-mo for his album ‘Another Days’ in 2001.

Baekhyun held his first solo concert ‘Baekhyun: Light’ through the online medium, because a live performance was not possible at that time, due to the COVID-19 restrictions. The show had 110,00 viewers across 120 countries all over the world. He released his album ‘Bambi’ in 2021. This album replaced the previous record of his album, ‘Delight’, in terms of the most pre-ordered album having to have received 833,000 copies across the world. This album is his second consecutive Korean-language album to have sold over one million copies.
