Early Life and Education
Career
In 1995, Mi-rae accompanied her friend to a new Korean hip-hop group audition. She did not audition, but her talent was discovered and recognised by a World Records representative who overheard her singing outside the audition room. She was then signed to join a new group called, Uptown.
The South Korean hip-hop group Uptown was formed in 1997, and its four original members were Chris Jung, Carlos Galvan, Steve Kim and Tasha Reid. Yoon Mi-rae, along with the rapper Lee Soo-a, whose stage name is Annie, formed the hip-hop and R&B duo ‘Tashannie’ in 1999. The duo released an album called ‘Parallel Prophecies’. She adopted the name Tasha as it was hard for South Koreans to pronounce in order to more effectively entice a prospective audience.
Uptown disbanded in 2000 when the members were arrested on drug charges. Rapper Tiger JK, who was her ex-boyfriend, was also detained and imprisoned for a month and a half, the same time, she also went hiding. In 2001, she debuted as a solo artist with the name T, which she shortened even more from Tasha.
She released her first album ‘As Time Goes By’ in 2001. She released her second album ‘Gemini’ on 4 May 2002 with 4 tracks. The same year, she released her third album titled ‘To My Love’. Mi-rae joined Jungle Entertainment in 2006 and the label was created by her husband Tiger JK. In 2007, she released the album ‘T3– Yoon Mi Rae’, which addresses the struggles she faced as a multiracial artist in Korea.
The same year she performed in Seoul, South Korea along with American singer Amerie, who is also of the same multiracial heritage. For the computer brand Hewlett-Packard in Korea, she became the face of the brand, having signed a one-year contract to appear in their print and radio advertisements in 2012. She was the judge in the third and fourth seasons of Superstar K, the South Korean television talent show.
In 2013, the members Mi-rae, Tiger JK and rapper Bizzy formed the hip-hop trio ‘My Fans Better Than Yours’, mostly known as MFBTY. The same year, the group released their first single ‘Sweet Dream’, which topped number one on three Korean charts respectively. For the concert in Cannes, France, the group debuted their first single. That very year, MFBTY signed the label Feel Ghood Music, which was formed by Tiger JK. For the drama ‘Master’s Sun’, her song ‘Touch Love’ earned the number-one spot on Billboard’s Korea K-Pop Hot 100 list in 2013.
She released the single ‘Angel’ in 2014, which topped number one on four Korean music charts.She revealed that the American film ‘The Interview’ used her song ‘Pay Day’ illegally without her permission and that she was taking legal action. In 2015, the single ‘This Love’ topped the KOR chart, where she was the lead artist. In 2011, she was the lead artist in the single ‘Get It In’, featuring Tiger JK and Jung-in. From the album /Asura Balbalta’, she was the featured artist in the single ‘Turned Off’ The TV featuring along with Leessang and 10 cm in 2011, which ranked number one on the KOR chart.
