Biography of Yerin Baek
Baek Ye-rin, widely known as Yerin Baek, is a South Korean singer and songwriter. Baek was the ex-member of the duo ’15&’, the South Korean duo formed by JYP Entertainment. In 2015, Baek debuted as a solo artist with the mini album ‘Frank’. Popularly known for her graceful and musical vocals, Baek’s accomplishments had her eight singles peak in the top ten on the Gaon Digital.
The distinctiveness of Baek as a solo artist is her ability to embrace and connect personal topics and real-life experiences through her songs and lyrics. Baek is acclaimed for her self-composition and for writing the lyrics for most of her songs. Early Life and Education
Baek was born on 26 June 1997 in Jung District, Daejeon. While being a trainee under the label JYP Entertainment, Baek spent two years living in New York where her family resides. In 2016, Baek graduated from Hanlim Multi Art School along with the ’15&’ member Park Ji-min and Kim Yu-gyeom of ‘Got7’.
Career
In the 2007 episode of the SBS, variety show Amazing Contest Star King, Baek performed ‘Listen’ by Beyoncé. For her performance, she was given the title ‘Contemporary R&B Genius’. Baek’s appearance as a 10-year-old-ballad genius startled the cast and viewers. Baek auditioned for JYP Entertainment and won second place. Baek underwent five years of training, from 2007-2012, both in South Korea and the United States. As Baek was multi-skilled in her vocal talent, piano and fluency in the English language, she was called a ‘genius girl’.
JYP Entertainment revealed on 27 September 2012 that Baek would debut as a part of the duo called 15& with Park Ji-min. On 5 October 2012, 15& debuted with their first single ‘I Dream’ on SBS Inkigayo. The Duo set about a four-year break in February 2015 and was disbanded, following Park’s departure from JYP Entertainment. Baek planned a solo album in 2015 and she met Cloud, a producer of Cheeze, a South Korean band formed in 2011.
In 2015, as a solo artist, Baek debuted her first extended play ‘Frank’, with her lead single ‘Across the Universe’. The lead single’s lyrics were influenced by the 2015 science fiction film, ‘The Martin’. On 20 June 2016, Baek released her first digital single ‘Bye Bye My Blue’. She released her follow-up digital single ‘Love You on Christmas’ on 7 December 2016. The single was digitally released by JYP Entertainment and Baek wrote and composed the lyrics herself.
Apart from being a solo artist, Baek has featured and collaborated with popular artists. She has performed multiple covers and her own unreleased songs at different music festivals. Baek created the musical band ‘The Volunteers’ with the members of the independent rock band ‘Bye Bye Badman’. The band released their first EP ‘Vanity and People’ in 2018. The South Korean rock band is composed of Baek Yerin, mainly vocals and guitars, bassist Cloud, guitarist Jonny and drummer Chiheon Kim. The band’s musical lyrics are entirely composed in English.
On 18 March 2019, Baek released her second mini-album ‘Our Love is Great’. Her title track from the mini-album ‘Maybe It’s Not Our Fault’ topped all of the eight domestic music sites charts. At the 2020 ‘Korean Music Awards’, Our Love is Great and the lead track ‘Maybe It’s Not Our Fault’ won the ‘Album of the Year’, ‘Best Pop Album’, and ‘Best Pop Song’.
Baek contributed to the soundtrack of the 2019-2020 South Korean television series ‘Crash Landing on You’ along with an original ballad ‘Here I am Again’. The song ranked number six on Billboards’s K-pop Hot 100 chart. On 13 September 2019, Baek officially announced her end of the contract with JYP Entertainment. Baek left to form her own independent record label, ‘Blue Vinyl’. Baek launched her own independent label Blue Vinyl on 6 November 2019 and on 22 November 2019, Baek released her first single titled ‘Popo (How Deep Is Your Love)’ through the label.
Along with her previously released songs on SoundCloud, the album comprised never-heard-before tracks as well. On 10 December 2019, Baek released her first studio album titled ‘Every Letter I Sent You’ with 17 a total of 18 songs being written in English. On 10 December 2019, Baek released her next single ‘Square (2017)’ which made Baek the first South Korean artist to reach the topmost charts with a song in English. The track was a megahit where Baek topped the daily and real-time charts of Melon, Genie, Bugs, Soribada, Flo and iChart.
Baek’s first solo concert ‘Turn on Blue Vinyl’ in 2020 was a success. On 10 December 2020, Baek released her second studio album ‘tellusaboutyourself’ with 14 tracks. The first single was titled ‘0415’ and it was released with its music video. Overall, the album contains five music videos titled ‘0415’, ‘Hate You’, ‘I’ll be your family!’, ‘I’m in love’, and ‘You’re so lonely now, so you need me back by your side again’. The album embraced extensive musical genres and lyrical themes.
On 16 February 2021, Baek released her digital EP with 6 remixed tracks titled ‘tellusboutyourself (remixes)’. The Volunteers launched their self-titled debut album under Blue Vinyl on 27 May 2021. The album challenges a sense of rebellion, opted influences from rock acts such as ‘Oasis’, ‘Red Hot Chili Peppers’ and the ‘Beatles’. With six remix tracks, Baek released her cover album ‘Love, Yerin’ on 10 September 2022. Baek released the digital single ‘Pisces’, the Korea Ballads on 24 May 2022.
