Biography of Soyeon

Jeon So-yeon is a South Korean rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer under Cube Entertainment popularly recognised as Soyeon. Before debuting as a solo artist in 2017, she drew attention to competing in television shows Produce 101 and Unpretty Rapster. She debuted as the leader and rapper of the girl group (G)I-DLE on 2 May 2018. She has also written and produced most title songs for the girl group. She was a part of SM Station X girl group project ‘Station Young’. She portrayed ‘League of Legends Akali in the virtual musical groups K/DA and True Damage.

Early Life and Education

Jeon So-yeon was born on 26 August 1998 in Gaepo-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea. She was home-schooled and later she attended Kuryong Elementary School. She learned ballet while in elementary school and she won numerous competitions. Her inspiration to pursue a career in music was Big Bang’s performance. She secretly attended and failed several singing auditions.

Later, she decided to pursue rapping. Even though she received interesting calls in favour, the taste of the interested parties was different from that of hers. So, she pursued dancing again, leaving behind her dream of music and she began performing as a street dancer. In 2014, she participated in Cube Entertainment Incheon auditions and became a trainee at the company.


For the first season of the girl group survival show ‘Produce 101’, Soyeon appeared as a representative trainee for Cube Entertainment in 2016. Throughout the show’s run, she remained a well-liked contestant. She was ranked number 20 in the last episode and failed to become a member of the winning project group I.O.I. She appeared as a contestant in the third season of the rap competition show ‘Unpretty Rapster’ in 2016. She won the second runner-up in the show and three of her tracks were included on the show’s final compilation album.

Jeon So-yeon signed an exclusive contract under Cube Entertainment as an artist on 29 December 2016. She officially debuted on 5 November 2017 with her digital singles ‘Jelly’ and ‘Idle Song’ whose lyrics are composed by her. She re-debuted in Cube Entertainment’s new girl group (G)I-DLE as a rapper and its leader on 11 January 2018. She was credited for composing the lyrics, music and arrangement for their celebrated and commercial success debut songs ‘Latata’ and ‘Hann’. She assisted in writing five songs from the (G)I-dle’s debut extended play ‘I Am’ under Cube Entertainment.

The extended play is a blend of multiple different genres. She participated in the girl group project called ‘Station Young’ for SM Station’s X 0, along with Red Velvet’s members Seulgi, Kim Chung-ha and GFriend’s SinB. On 28 September 2018, Station Young released their collaborative single ‘Wow Thing’. It ranked number three in US World Digital Song Sales.

Riot Games approached Jeon So-yeon and fellow (G)I-DLE member Miyeon for the collaboration with the American artists Jaira Burns and Madison Beer as part of the virtual girl group K/DA for the multiplayer online battle arena video game ‘League of Legends’. For the 2018 League of Legends World Championship, K/DA officially debuted with the song ‘Pop/Stars’. The music video reached 100 million in one month on YouTube.

The song peaked at number one on Billboard’s World Digital Songs chart. The K/DA incarnation of the character Akali’s vocals were performed by her, which became a well-liked and admired subject of fan art and cosplay. For the group’s EP No.1, she composed the labelmate CLC’s ‘No’ in 2019, which became the lead single. In the League of Legends collaborative hip-hop group True Damage, she reprised his role as Akali. A collaborative single titled’ Giants’ was also released on 10 November 2019, along with the animated music video.

The song was performed in English but the verses were composed in Spanish and Korean. A performance of the same was held in the 2019 League of Legends World Championship finals in Paris, France. Giants ranked number fifteen and nineteen on Billboard’s Rap and R&B/Hip hop Digital Songs Sales charts. She appeared as a guest on Mnet’s hip-hop-inspired show ‘Do You Know’ Hip Hop in 2020. She collaborated with Double K and Nuck to perform a remix of ‘Lion’.

The third EP of (G)I-DLE is titled ‘I Trust’, where Jeon So-yeon and Yummy Tone collaborated together in writing and composing music. She featured DJ Hyo’s ‘Dessert’ from the album ‘Deep’ released in 2022. On 3 August 2020, (G) I-DLE’s first summer song ‘Dumdi Dumdi’ was composed by her alongside Pop Time. On the K/DA’s EP All Out, she reprised her role as League of Legends character Akali in ‘The Baddest’ and ‘More’ on 24 August 2020.

For Apink’s Namjoo solo debut song ‘Bird’, she was credited as the producer for the same. (G)I-dle released their fourth Korean extended play ‘I Burn’ with the lead single titled ‘Hwaa’ in 2021. She wrote four of the six tracks in the album. Jeon So-yeon on Face ID, a Kakoa TV entertainment show was revealing celebrities’ way of living through their phones.

On 5 July 2021, she released her debut extended play ‘Windy’ under Cube Entertainment and Republic Records. It consists of 5 tracks with the lead single ‘Beam Beam’. The album sets forth her alter ego named Windy, who explores her unexplored dream twenties. On SBS MTV’s The Show Jeon So-yeon won her first music programme trophy.o
