Synopsis
After a long gap of 24 years, two childhood friends, Nora and Hae Sung, meet each other again in New York. When Nora and Hae Sung were classmates, they used to walk together on their way back home. The bond they shared was much more intense than that of friendship.
However, they lost connection when Nora’s family moved to Toronto. After 12 years of disconnection, they reconnect one day through social media. By the time Hae Sung finishes his mandatory military service, and soon leaves for China. On the other hand, Nora is ready for her writer’s retreat. To pursue their passion, they decided to put a break to their current communication through social media.

Nora’s passion takes her to a new destination. She meets a man named Arthur. The bond between Arthur and Nora grows stronger and one day, she explains the concept of ‘in-yeon’ that exists in Korean culture to Arthur.
According to the ‘in-yeon’ concept, the people who are lovers in their current life are the people who actually encountered in their previous lives. However, Nora believes that this concept is something that is used by the Koreans to seduce their dates. Later, she marries Arthur. Likewise, Hae Sung also finds a woman in China and they start dating.
After 12 more years, Hae Sung visits New York in the hope of meeting Nora. They meet and decide to go for sightseeing, and while enjoying their leisure time together, Nora asks about Hae Sung’s love life. Although Nora has a satisfying family life, Hae Sung is reluctant to commit to his girlfriend because of his poor financial status.
After their meet-up, Nora concludes that the intention behind the visit of Hae Sung is to see her. To clear the doubt of Arthur, Nora promises him that she wishes to live with him.
The next night, Arthur, Nora and Hae Sung meet in a bar. For a smooth conversation between the three, sharing different languages, Nora initially translates their conversation, but later Nora and Hae Sung start to speak in Korean forgetting the existence of Arthur sitting near them.
While they talk, Hae Sung picks up the topic of ‘in-yeon’. He wonders what is their relation according to the concept of ‘in-yeon’. Overwhelmed by the tension in the air, Nora goes to the restroom. Hae Sung apologises to Arthur for ignoring him.

When Hae Sung is about to leave, he invites Nora and Arthur to Korea. Nora stays with Hae Sung until his Uber arrives. Before Hae Sung leaves, he discloses how he defines their relationship according to the concept of ‘in-yeon’. He tells Nora that the life they experience now is their past life and wonders what kind of relationship they will share in the next life.
With a broken heart, Nora returns to her apartment after wishing farewell to Hae Sung, she collapses into the arms of Arthur crying.
Theme
‘Past lives’ is a disappointing love story between Nora and Hae Sung. However, the movie still gives a ray of hope for both of the characters in their next life through the Korean concept of ‘in-yeon’. Though Nora and Hae Sung have come a long way from their childhood, they still check for the traces of the young boy and girl that they once were. Even after changing her name and identity, Nora still tries to hold on to her roots by speaking Korean, which sometimes amuses Arthur.
Furthermore, in the movie, silence plays a major role in expressing the utmost feelings of the characters. This movie emphasises a different phase of romance and love where the sincere love of two men engulfs the feelings of the heroine.
