Synopsis
The movie unwinds staging Kim Min-su, the handsome CEO of a gaming company. He has got a magnetic charm and immense wealth, which makes him irresistible to girls. The moment he gets his eye on a girl, Min-su will do anything of his power to woo her and bring her under his spell. He is not ready for any long-term commitments and ditches every relationship when he feels like it has lost its appeal. Min-su holds on to the belief that there is no such thing as true love and never exhibits emotional attachment.
Nevertheless, fate had another plan. One fine morning, on his way to office for a business meeting, Min-su met with a small accident and hit a car, while trying to impress a girl. Kyung-min,his partner in business, saw a bruise on his neck and drove him to the hospital. A rebellious Min-su meets angel-like beauty, Hye-won, on his way to the hospital. It was raining heavily while she was waiting to get on a bus at the bus station and that is when Min-su’s speeding car splashed water on her. Hye-won followed his car angrily and confronted him.
Min-su, in turn, offered a ride to the hospital which Hye-won plainly rejected. He was wonderstruck seeing Hye-won’s beauty and unflinching ways. Two of them later ran into each other again inside the hospital bathroom. Hye-won is trying to escape an oppressive hospital and she takes the help of Min-su to find her way out of it. Despite the attempts made to please her, Hye-won seems not to come his way. Thus, Min-su becomes more curious about the lady and takes an active interest in her.
One day, Min-su asked Hye-won out for a movie night and she agreed. They had dinner, laughed together and started clicking selfies on their phone. Min-su tried to kiss her while taking a picture, to which Hye-won reacted oddly. Min-su was convinced that he was experiencing something strange for Hye-won, that he had never felt for any other woman. They became mutually attracted to each other after going on a few dates and spending time together. When Min-su asked Hye-won to be his girlfriend, she asked him to seek apologies from every girl he had hurt before. Min-su did exactly what she said and thereafter, the two confessed their love and start a relationship.
One day, while having fun outside, Hye-won fainted and was admitted to the hospital. It was not known till now that Hye-won was fighting a severe lung disease which had no cure. She loathed sympathy and that is why she kept a positive mind. Even her reluctance to get things moving in their relationship was due of her illness.
The later part of the story reveals that Min-su was also suffering from a deadly brain tumour. His friend Kyung-min discovered the diagnosis report and approached him. Min-su refuses to get any treatment because it could potentially make him forget Hye-won and he did not want her to know. The doctor denied Hye-won of permission to leave the hospital as she is physically ill and things could get worse at any moment.
Min-su understood that Hye-won did not have much time left and slips her out of the hospital. They fly to Hye-won’s homeland to meet her father. After spending some time at her favourite childhood spot, they plan to return. However, Hye-won collapsed inside the aeroplane and passes away.
Min-su is haunted by the memories of Hye-won everywhere and finds a pre-recorded video of her. She admitted that she knew about his illness. She promised him that she will hold onto him and will always love him.
The Power of Influence
The movie ‘Now and Forever’ makes the viewer giddy in the first half and then makes them bawl their eyes out in the second part. It is dense with intense emotions, heartfelt confessions and mild humour. The director delves into the delicacy of human sentiments through the eyes of Min-su. Two sides of a coin are depicted here, the power to influence and the power to be influenced.
In the beginning part of the movie, Min-su is shown as a womanizer. He fancies every desirable woman who passes his line of sight. Being pretty confident in his allure is one of his attributes that helps him gain more notice. However, all this is superficial when analysed from an emotional point of view. Min-su’s contentment is rudimentary as he’s not driven by emotions.
Hye-won is the only person who could bring a change to this. She taught him the value of true love and his own life. Min-su was always a man of logic, but we can witness his transition to a man who listens to his heart. In the end, we see that he was hiding his own illness to not make Hye-won anxious.
Both characters influence each other in many ways. The love and tenderness they have for each other are reflective of this. Min-su at some point, understood the value of small gestures and a positive outlook towards life. He gave Hye-won the lever of his life and followed her without a murmur. Eventually, we see a polished character in Min-su.
