Early Life and Education
Career
Moonbin debuted as a child model and ulzzang under his mother’s influence in 2004. His first appearance was in 2006 in the music video ‘Balloons’, portraying mini U-know Yunho. His first acting role was in the Korean drama ‘Boys Over Flowers’. He played the character Kim Bum’s younger version.
As a trainee of Fantagio and during his middle school years he was a full-fledged trainee. He participated in the company’s boy group project iTeen. He was the second trainee introduced to Fantagio iTeen Photo Test Cut. Before debuting with Astro, Moonbin and his teammates starred in the web drama ‘To Be Continued’.
On 23 February 2016, Moonbin debuted as a member of the group Astro. Their debut EP was titled Spring Up with the lead single ‘Hide & Seek’. He participated in the first two seasons of ‘The Ultimate Watchlist of Latest Trends’. He was cast in the South Korean series, ‘Moments of Eighteen’ as Jung Oh-je.
On 12 November 2019, Fantagio officially reported the absence of Moon bin from Astro’s upcoming promotions for their Blue Flame EP release. After appearing in a V Live broadcast, Moonbin ended his hiatus in 2020. Alongside Yoon San-ha and Verivery’s Kangmin, Moon Bin was announced as one of the new South Korean music show ‘Show Champion’ hosts. He was the lead role in the web drama ‘The Mermaid Prince’. He joined the cooking program ‘Food Avengers’.
He was announced as the fashion model for the brand Nerdy Cafe in September 2020. With the release of the EP ‘In-Out’, Moon Bin along with his bandmate debuted as Astro’s first sub-unit Moonbin & Sanha. It contains the lead single ‘Bad Idea’. The unit received its first show win after eight days from ‘The Show’.
He was selected as the first muse for Neikidnis in 2021. He was a cast member for the second season of ‘Coupang Play’s Saturday Night Live Korea’. On 30 December 2022, Fantagio officially announced the renewal of the contract with Moon Bin.
Achievements
With his strong vocals, sharp dance moves and handsome looks, he had a significant number of followers and fans in South Korea, especially ASTRO and K-pop in general. He was successful in his career and was nominated for the Entertainer of the Year- Maleat 2020 APAN Music Awards.
Personal Life
Moonbin was influenced and inspired by his mother to enter the entertainment industry. His family consists of his parents and his younger sister Moon Sua. His sister was a former YG Trainee and debuted in the girl group Billie.
Death
Moonbin was found dead at his home on 19 April 2023 in Gangnam District of Seoul. He died at the age of 25 and was found by his manager, as he failed to attend his rehearsals. As per the statement from the Yonhap News by the Seoul Gangnam Police who investigated the death, he took his own life. It’s one of the possibilities of an autopsy determining the cause of his death. Gangnam Police passed the statement to CNN as “no signs of foul play have been found related to this case.”
As per the request of his family members, Moonbin’s funeral procession and the burial site were never disclosed. It was announced by Fantagio that he was to be buried on 22 April 2023. He was set to perform at the Dream Concert in Busan with his fellow Astro member Sanha but was found dead later the next day after the announcement. Condolences were made by the organizers through their social media accounts.
