Synopsis

Kang-il, a gutsy firefighter, saves the lives of people without a second thought and Mi-soo, a young doctor, works in a multispeciality hospital.

One fine morning, Mi-soo consults a patient with a severe headache, screaming in pain. Without consulting a senior doctor, she moves on and gives a prescription to the nurse in charge. She takes this as a turn to get appreciation from the head. The patient’s husband staunchly requests a thorough checkup, but Mi-soo vehemently rejects it and writes for hospital discharge.

Meanwhile, Kang-il arrives at his workplace, the fire station, and gets ready for the day. His team receives a call for an emergency rescue and leaves for the destination. Upon their arrival, they see the patient and her husband who left Mi-soo’s hospital, lying near the sidewalk.

The patient fainted and has now gone into critical condition. She could have been saved if provided with the necessary care a bit earlier. The diagnosis of the doctor on-site infuriates the husband and he sprints to the hospital where Mi-soo is working. Kang-il is asked to follow him by his captain.

When he arrives at the hospital, the husband is seen making chaos at the place. Kang-il heads on to calm him and stop him from attacking the doctors but gets hit on the head. However, he finally manages to control the aggressive man.

At this time, Mi-soo is reprimanded by her senior doctor for the misdiagnosis and gives the lowdown about further consequences. She is at risk of suspension and might even lose her medical license.

Her legal advisor pins down a way to absolve the issue. She asks Mi-soo to smooth-talk Kang-il into testifying against the patient’s husband and his rabid violent nature. Mi-soo agrees and goes on to convince him, but that idea goes in vain as he turns a cold shoulder. Affixed on her motive, she tried everything she could do to bring Kang-il her way.

At last of all the attempts, Mi-soo climbed on a bridge, making a pretence of suicide. She lost her grip accidentally when Kang-il came close to her. However, he grabbed hold of her skirt and somehow saved her from falling. The police took action against her for a suicide attempt, but Mi-soo sweet-talked them into helping her. The officers bought her food and suggested joining the community services.

The next day, Mi-soo, along with her friend, joins Kang-il’s team as a paramedic. They go on for operations together and Mi-soo, over the days, comprehended that Kang-il always signs up for the riskiest deeds. Later that day, the captain caters for an evening welcome party for the new members.

Mi-soo takes up this chance to flirt with Kang-il and calculatingly sends everyone back home except him. She faints on the road while looking for a cab to get back home and Kang-il carries her on his shoulders. She regains consciousness in a minute and canvasses him to get a beer. Afterwards, the scene turns topsy-turvy when a drunk Kang-il walks around the bar hugging a chair. Min-soo fights with the ladies at the bar yelling at him and again get arrested.

It is not until the following day, Kang-il gets a grasp of the whole situation and he rushes to the police station knowing Mi-soo is still under custody. On their way back, they chat and it is revealed that Kang-il lost his wife while he was away on a mission. He is grieving his wife’s death and that explains why he takes up riskier activities. Both of them further strengthen their bonds by going for rescue attempts, together. One such incident is when Mi-soo fainted in between a rescue operation inside a cold freezer and Kang-il came to save her.

After this incident, Kang-il softens up and seems interested in her, but his ego never seems to compromise. Mi-soo again blacks out one day while having fun and he takes her to the hospital. On their way back, she insists on going to the beach and the two spend a lovely night together.

In the following scene at Kang-il’s house, we can see Mi-soo asking Kang-il to assure her not to undertake any more trouble. Before he could seal the promise, someone rings the bell and he hides her away in his deceased wife’s room. Mi-soo goes through all the possessions of Kang-il’s wife and feels guilty for faking her love. She leaves the place and meets him later.

They have an open talk about all that has happened. Apparently, Kang-il could not let go of his wife’s memories and he also comes to know about the real reason why Mi-soo approached him. They keep their distance and later in the story, Mi-soo is diagnosed with a minor brain tumour, explaining the reasons for her sudden blackouts. She confesses her feelings for Kang-il, this time with utmost sincerity, inside a church and tells him how much he means to her.

The patient whose case Mi-soo misdiagnosed, in the beginning, was confirmed brain dead and she could die any moment. Mi-soo goes to the hospital seeking an apology from the patient’s husband after Kang-il tells her about the situation. The same night, Kang-il moves on to rescue a girl trapped inside a car on a railway track, disregarding Mi-soo’s words.

Towards the end, the rescue teams get a dodgy case of saving a man from the rubble of a building. Everyone steps back, but Kang-il takes up the challenge and gets inside to save a life. While on the mission, the whole building collapses and two of them are caught inside.

Mi-soo, while going for her surgery, hears the news through a car radio and flees out of the car to meet Kang-il. However, both of them were miraculously saved and Kang-il was taken to the hospital. On the way, he dreams of Mi-soo and runs out of the ambulance. The two finally meet in the middle of a busy street and share a passionate kiss. The next scene rolls down showing Kang-il and Mi-soo going together for their next mission with the team.

Scars and Stars – Theme

The storyline of ‘Love 911’ portrays an outlook on the scars past traumas can inflict on people. Both the main leads, Kang-il and Mi-soo, have their own demons to fight. Kang-il overworks himself just because he thinks he is responsible for his wife’s death. He never misses a chance to present himself in a daring situation. This guilt haunts him all throughout his life. His grief is the reason for his emotional unavailability and it discourages him from accepting Mi-soo’s love.

Mi-soo, on the other hand, has a self-centred character. Her father’s death made her choose the medical profession. However, it seems that her over-confidence ended in the death of an innocent soul. This incident totally was an eye-opener for Mi-soo. Nonetheless, she might go to any extent to get what she wants, which explains why she never kept away from following Kang-il.

We see an overall evolution in both characters. Kang-il takes a new chance in love and Mi-soo becomes more mature and develops true feelings for him.
