Biography of Lee Jung-jae

Lee Jung-jae is a South Korean actor and filmmaker who was born on 15 December 1972 in Seoul. He gained recognition through his work as a fashion model before switching to television acting in the middle of the 1990s, where he continued to excel. ‘Feelings’ (1994), a drama with a collegiate subject, and ‘Sandglass’ (1995) were among his first of many acting roles (1995). Since then, he has had multiple appearances in successful films, including ‘The Thieves’ (2012), ‘Warriors of the Dawn’ (2017), and most recently, ‘Deliver Us From Evil’ (2020).

His most famous role is ‘Seong Gi Hun’ in the popular Korean Netflix drama ‘Squid Game’. This role made him famous around the world, gaining 4.9 million followers for his Instagram account in a short amount of time. His very first Instagram post was a selfie that received more than 2 million likes.

Lee Jung-jae has garnered numerous honours, including a ‘Primetime Emmy Award’, a ‘Screen Actors Guild Award’, a ‘Critics’ Choice Television Award’, six ‘Baeksang Arts Awards’, and nominations for a ‘Golden Globe Award’ and a ‘Gotham Award’. Jung-jae also has a successful business career in addition to his acting career. Early Life & Education

Lee Jung-jae attended ‘Dongguk University’ and received his master’s degree from the Graduate School of Cultural Arts ‘Theater & Film Art division’ in August 2008. In December of that same year, he made his stage debut in Hamlet in Water, playing the title part. At his alma mater’s Lee Hae-rang Theater, the drama was presented for four days.

Career & Achievements

Designer Ha Yong-soo spotted Lee Jung-jae while he was working at a café in Apgujeong-dong, Gangnam District. This incident opened the door to him for modelling. After working as a model for several years, he made his acting debut in the 1993 TV drama ‘Dinosaur Teacher’, which gave him overnight fame and was almost exclusively cast in the leading roles thereafter. He garnered positive reviews for his first major film part in Bae Chang-ho’s ‘The Young Man’. It was the 1994 smash campus drama ‘Feelings’ that pushed him to a household name.

Lee Jung-jae became a national heartthrob in 1995 when he was cast in what was supposed to be a modest supporting role as the heroine’s silent, dedicated bodyguard in the drama ‘Sandglass’. As a result, his screen time was expanded throughout the series’ length.

Jung-jae’s career took off in 1998 with his role in the film ‘An Affair’ which won awards. He continued to have success in films like ‘City of the Rising Sun’ and ‘Il Mare’ which gained a cult following over time. He also had success in other films like ‘Last Present’ and ‘The Last Witness. In 2002, he starred in ‘Over the Rainbow’ and in 2003 he starred in a comedy film ‘Oh! Brothers’, which was one of his biggest hits. He then took a break from acting for a few years before returning in 2005 with the action film ‘Typhoon’.
Jung-jae made a comeback to television after a decade, but his dramas ‘Air City’ (2007) and ‘Triple’ (2009) did not perform well in terms of ratings. He then starred in the period action comedy film ‘The Accidental Gangster and the Mistaken Courtesan’ where he played a comical and unorthodox character, which was different from his previous roles. Although the film was not successful financially, Lee still considers it one of his most memorable films.
In the well-known 2010 sensual thriller, ‘The Housemaid’, which was shown at the ‘Cannes Film Festival’ and ‘Toronto International Film Festival’, Jung-jae resurrected his acting career. The Fantasporto Director’s Week honoured him with the Best Actor prize. As his next venture, he joined the cast of ‘The Thieves’, a 2012 heist film that became the second highest-grossing picture in Korean cinema history.

His next project was ‘El Fin del Mundo’, a 13-minute split-screen film made by visual artists Moon Kyung-won and Jeon Joon-ho, which depicts the future environmental changes and the end of the world. The film shows a conversation between two artists in different times and spaces, played by Jung-jae and Im Soo-jung. The film was screened at the prestigious art platform ‘dOCUMENTA’ in 2012.
In the crime drama New World, he portrayed a police officer who goes undercover in a crime gang (2013). He expressed his gratitude to co-star Choi Min-sik for recommending his casting to the director. Later, after working with Song Ji-hyo in ‘New World’, he reportedly decided to choose ‘C-JeS Entertainment’ as his exclusive management company.
Then, in the historical drama The Face Reader (2013), he played Prince Suyang opposite Song Kang-ho, for which he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at both the Blue Dragon Film Awards and the Baeksang Arts Awards.
Then, in 2014, he got the action comedy ‘Big Match’, in which he portrayed a martial artist attempting to win a complex high-stakes game in order to save his brother.
In the 2015 film Assassination, which is set in 1930s Korea and Shanghai during the Japanese occupation, he collaborated once more with The Thieves director Choi Dong-hoon and actress Jun Ji-hyun.
Jung-jae was selected as ‘Actor of the Year’ at the ‘3rd Marie Claire Asia Star Awards’ in addition to winning ‘Best Actor’ at the ’24th Building Film Awards’.
Then, in the crime thriller Tik Tok, Jung-jae made his debut in a Chinese drama. He made a triumphant comeback to Korean cinema with the blockbuster Operation Chromite, in which he portrayed a South Korean navy lieutenant who was instrumental in turning the course of the Korean War.
In 2017, his movies, ‘Warriors of the Dawn’ as well as the fantasy blockbuster ‘Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds’ were released.
In the 2019 supernatural movie ‘Svaha: The Sixth Finger’, Jung-jae played the lead role. In the same year, you made his first television appearance in ten years with the JTBC political drama ‘Chief of Staff’, in which he co-stars with Shin Min-a and portrays a political counsellor. In the action movie ‘Deliver Us from Evil’ from 2020, he co-starred with Park Jeong-min and Hwang Jung-min.

Jung-jae played ‘Seong Gi-hun’, the lead character in the popular Netflix survival drama ‘Squid Game’, in September 2021. In the series, his character is an unlucky gambler who is persuaded to compete for a large cash prize in a series of silly but dangerous games, to become the winner.

Seong Gi-hun became Lee’s most well-known role to date as a result of the series’ success. He received a lot of awards for that role, including the ‘SAG Awards’ & ‘Primetime Emmy Awards’.

On November 11, 2021, news broke that Lee had been chosen to represent the prestigious Gucci brand internationally. Later that month, the show’s creator Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that Lee would reprise his role as ‘Gi-hun’ in the second season of Squid Game.

He made his directorial debut in 2022 with the spy action picture ‘Hunt’, in which he also co-starred with Jung Woo-sung. The movie had its world premiere in May 2022 at the ‘Cannes Film Festival’.

On 26 February 2022, he signed a contract with ‘Creative Artists Agency’. It was reported that he will play the male protagonist in the Star Wars television series ‘The Acolyte’ when it debuts on Disney+ on 8 September 2022. President Yoon Suk-yeol presented him with the ‘Geumgwan Order of Cultural Merit’, the highest honour given to people who have made contributions to the culture and the arts.
