Biography of Kim Kibum

Kim Ki-bum, widely known as Kibum is a South Korean actor, singer and rapper. He was a member of Super Junior. He left the boy band to pursue his acting career after the release of Super Junior’s third studio album ‘Sorry, Sorry’ (2009). In 2015, he ended his contract with SM Entertainment and departed from the group. His first television debut was in the Korean television drama, ‘April Kiss’ (2004).

Early Life and Education

Kibum was born on 21 August 1987 in Seoul, South Korea. He has a younger sister, Kim Sae-hee. He completed his education at Santa Monica High School. He has a cousin who is an actor and a model named Shin Dong-wook. When he was ten, he relocated to Los Angeles, California, United States.

Career

In 2002, Kibum was founded by a talent agent from South Korea. He was recommended to audition for the Starlight Casting System by SM Entertainment. He officially signed with SM Entertainment and became a trainee. He was trained in the areas of singing, acting, dancing, and other performing talents such as hosting and modelling.

Kibum debuted as an actor on 21 April 2004 in the KBS drama ‘April Kiss’. He acted as young Han Jung Woo and the drama was aired in 2004. Initially, his acting career was marked with minor roles like in the KBS drama ‘Sharp 2’ (2005), co-starring with Go Ara and Heechul. The same year he acted in the MBC drama ‘Marrying a Millionaire’, as the young Kim Younghoon.

Kibum debuted as a part of the 12-member rotational project group ‘Super Junior 05’ on 6 November 2005. They performed their first single ‘TWINS (Knock Out)’ on SBS’s music programme ‘Popular Songs’. On 5 December 2005, they released their debut album ‘SuperJunior05 (Twins)’. Shortly after its release, it ranked number three on the monthly MIAK K-pop album charts.

In 2006, Kibum took the lead role in the MBC daily sitcom ‘Rainbow Romance’ with Kim Heechul for 243 episodes. He starred in the television series ‘Snow Flower’ (2006) along with Kim Hee-ae, Go Ara and Lee Jae-ryong. He acted as Ha Young-chan. The drama narrates the story of a mother trying to protect her daughter but ends up otherwise.

In 2006, SM Entertainment began the search for new members to join the next Super Junior generation however the plans were halted. With the addition of the thirteenth member Kyuhyun, the group dropped the suffix ’05’. Officially the band changed their name to ‘Super Junior’. The group released their first CD single ‘U’ on 7 June 2006. The single became a popular hit and was an all-time favourite hit until the release of ‘Sorry, Sorry’ (2009).

Kibum appeared in the high school Korean film ‘Attack on the Pin-Up Boys’ (2007). Every member starred in the film except Super Junior except Kyuhyun. In 2008, he starred with Wang Bitna in the MBC drama Chunja’s Happy Events after a break of 16 months from acting. The same year, he and his bandmate Choi Siwon were co-presenters of Thailand’s 12 Plus Powder. The co-presenter later switched to bandmate Donghae for another product of 12 Plus – ‘roll-on’.

In 2009, Super Junior released their third album ‘Sorry, Sorry’ and their second single ‘It’s You’ Kinbum was absent and did not have any active role in singing. He did not take part in the concert tour ‘Super Show 2 Tour’ even though he was featured in it.

In 2010, he starred in the second film ‘Jumunjin’. The movie revolves around the love story of a ghost man and a girl who live in the countryside. He acted in the theatrical play A Nap, at Baekam Art Hall in Samseong-dong, Seoul. He played the young version of the male lead Young-jin with Lee Joo-seung.

Kibum prioritised his acting career and paused his participation in the fourth album, ‘Bonamana’, nor any further Super Junior activities until further notice. In the following years, he had an active role in acting. In 2011, Kibum acted in the historical drama ‘Deep Rooted Tree’. He played the role of Joseon scholar-official Pak Paengnyeon. He starred as the male lead Geum Eun-dong in ‘I Love Lee Tae-ri’ in 2012.

In 2013 he acted in the Chinese television drama, ‘The Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils Duan Yu’ and in 2014 in the Chinese television drama, ‘Lucky Tianbao’. On 18 August he announced via his personal SNS that his contract with SM Entertainment had ended.

On 25 August 2017, Kibum’s Chinese film ‘My Kitchen Lover’ was released. On 25 June 2018, he signed with Clover Company. He appeared in the SBS Plus variety show ‘Two Feet Life’. In 2020, he started his own YouTube Channel, ‘Yangban Kim Kibum’.

Kibum left Clover Company on 13 January 2022 and signed with PA Entertainment. He started his fan meetings in March 2022 and on 2 May 2022, he terminated his contract with PA Entertainment.

He terminated his contract with PA Entertainment in 2022 and is dedicated to building a career of recognition and popularity in the acting industry.
