Biography of Jung Ryeo-won
Jung Ryeo-won is a Korean-Australian actress born on 21 January 1981, in Seoul, South Korea. She was a member of the South Korean girl group ‘Chakra’ before her acting debut. Since then, she has shown her active screen presence through different dramas and movies of multiple genres, like ‘My Name Is Kim Sam-soon’ (2005), ‘Two Faces of My Girlfriend’ (2007), ‘Castaway on the Moon’ (2009), ‘History of a Salaryman’ (2012), and ‘Wok of Love’ (2018).
Early Life and Education
Jung Ryeo-won is the second child of her parents, and she has two more siblings. In 1992, when she was a child, her family moved from South Korea to settle in Australia. As a foreign student with little knowledge of English, she faced discrimination from other students. Nonetheless, she mustered up the courage to start a new life in Brisbane (Australia) and acquire fluency in English.
She attended MacGregor State High School. Later, she graduated in international business from Griffith University.
She longed to visit her homeland. One winter, she visited South Korea to enjoy the snowfall. The journey was a turning point in her life since it became the reason that led her to debut as a member of Chakra.
Career
Jung Ryeo-won chose Korean University as part of her student exchange program in 2000, when she was a student at Griffith University. The South Korean singer and television personality, Lee Sang-min, spotted Ryeo-won in Apgujeong streets. Later, she got into the girl group Chakra. There were four members in the group, namely Eani, Eun, Hwangbo, and Jung Ryeo-won. The girls debuted in 2000 with the single ‘Han’. Though the girls caught the attention of K-pop fans, the group failed to continue its activities.
After the disbandment of Chakra in 2004, Ryeo-won redirected her career to acting. Building an acting career was not easy for Ryeo-woon at that time. She was rejected from eleven consecutive auditions.
In 2005, Ryeo-won succeeded in getting the audience’s attention in the vampire sitcom ‘Hello Franceska’. Her popularity spread through the MBC series ‘My Name Is Kim Sam-soon’ released in the same year. She played the role of Yoo Hee-jin, a soft-hearted girl.
She made her movie debut through ‘Two Faces of My Girlfriend’ released in 2007. In the movie, she played the role of Ani, a girl with multiple personality disorders. She was awarded at the Blue Dragon Film Awards in the Best New Actress category for her excellent portrayal of the character.
In 2009, Ryeo-won appeared in two notable works of hers. She played the role of Princess Ja-myung in her first-period drama, ‘Princess Jamyung’. Also, she appeared as Kim Jung-yeon in the movie ‘Castaway on the Moon’ opposite Kim Seong-geun.
In 2011, she made two big-screen appearances. She appeared in the Korean war drama film ‘In Love and War’ as Park Seol-hee, a teacher who resides in the countryside of South Korea. Her second movie of the year, ‘Pained’, was a melodrama that tells the story of a man who is unable to sense pain.
In 2012, she appeared in her breakthrough drama ‘History of a Salaryman’ aired on SBS. Ryeo-won as Baek Yeo-chi presents a selfish girl who is raised by her rich grandfather after her parents’ deaths. For playing the role, she received the Top Excellence Award at the SBS Drama Awards.
Later, she starred in the film ‘Never Ending Story’, a romantic comedy that tells the story of two people with life-threatening diseases. Also, she appeared as a screenwriter in ‘The King of Dramas’ later in the year.
At the beginning of January 2013, Ryeo-won launched her official website to interact with her fans. In the same year, she appeared opposite Kwon Sang-woo in ‘Medical Top Team’. It was a medical drama aired on MBC, and she played the role of Seo Joo-young, a thoracic surgeon.
She united with Lee Dong-wook after the 2003 sitcom ‘Do the Right Thing’ for the TV series ‘Bubble Gum’ (2015). Later, in 2017, she played the role of a prosecutor in the series ‘Witch at Court’. For acting in the role, she received the Top Excellence Award.
In the 2018 black comedy movie ‘Gate’ Ryeo-won appeared as So-eun. Later that year, she starred in the SBS drama ‘Wok of Love’.
In the 2019 television drama ‘Prosecutor Civil War’, she appeared as prosecutor Cha Myung-joo.
On behalf of her contract expiration in September 2020, she moved out of KeyEast entertainment company and signed in with H & Entertainment. She decided to continue with the company by renewing her contract period in July 2022.
Achievements
Being an artist, she loves to draw pictures related to Christian themes. She published her first portrait collection in 2007. In 2012, her two artworks were sold at a charity auction.
