Synopsis
Kang Se-ha is a physically disabled orphan child. Since the death of his mother, he has been living with an uncle, but due to his immobility, Se-ha has become a burden to him. Despite his physical disability, Se-ha is a brilliant child. One day, a priest adopts him and takes him to his orphanage.
In the orphanage, he sees Park Dong-gu sitting in his imaginary world and playing alone. Suddenly, a bully in the gang hits him and pins his face to the ground. Watching Dong-gu get tortured, Se-ha saves him from the bully. From that day on, Dong-gu and Se-ha became friends.
Dong-gu started to stick around Se-ha and started taking care of all his activities, from brushing to anything. The death of their guardian priest makes Se-ha think about their future. To feed their mouths, Se-ha and Dong-gu start to collect money by convincing them of their helplessness.
They meet Nam Mi-hyun at a swimming competition. Dong-gu is a talented swimmer and has great physical strength. However, his lack of wit prevents him from understanding the happenings around him. Therefore, at the swimming competition, Dong-gu messes up and causes Mi-hyun to lose her job.
Se-ha realises that Dong-gu has a future in swimming, and they can survive using his talent. Therefore, Se-ha approaches Mi-hyun and requests to train Dong-gu. She accepts the proposal put forward by Se-ha and starts preparing Dong-gu for the upcoming swimming competition. However, he becomes scared since, when he was a child, his mother abandoned him when he was swimming in the pool. Therefore, when he reaches the middle of the pool, he gets scared to swim forward. Dong-gu loses the match, which Se-ha and Mi-hyun put a lot of hope and faith into.
Se-ha asks Dong-gu to win the next match. They move to a new place without the other residents of the orphanage. Soon after they move into the new place, Dong-gu’s mother shows up and claims him. She files a case to get her son back. In the case’s hearing, Dong-gu said he likes to live with his mother. The next day, his mother comes and takes Dong-gu to his new home.
One day, Mi-hyun comes to meet Dong-gu at his mother’s restaurant. He asks Mi-hyun about Se-ha and tells her that Se-ha cannot do anything without his assistance. The thought of Se-ha living alone disturbed Dong-gu. The next day, he grabs a taxi and goes to the orphanage where they once lived. However, the orphanage is partially demolished.
Finally, the day of Dong-gu’s swimming competition arrived. Mi-hyun invites Se-ha to cheer for Dong-gu, but he refuses. Nonetheless, he sees a bunch of straws scattered on the floor, which reminds him of Dong-gu. Therefore, to cheer Dong-gu, he goes to the pool in his automatic wheelchair.
Dong-gu, accompanied by his mother, arrives at the pool. He dives into the water with the other candidates but stops swimming when he reaches the middle. Still, he gathers confidence and wins the match. When he comes out of the pool, he sees Se-ha and Mi-hyun.
The movie ends by showing Dong-gu and Se-ha living in their apartment with the permission of Dong-gu’s mother. Also, in the end, it reveals the suicide attempt made by Se-ha. It was Dong-gu who pulled him out of the water and brought him back to life.
